I completely agree. Environment and nurturing make up a lot, if not the entirety, of what comes 'natural' to us all. When I look at how I got to be who I am, examine the results and/or consequences of my behaviors and choices, I many times have asked myself "what have I become and how did I get this way - or far too often in my past - how did this happen to me." I see the natural man and his 'condition' being far inferior to the creational man.
Recognizing and undersatnding the difference would require believing you are a unique and sanctified creation in the first place.
IMO many are willing to settle to stay that way by reproducing and or perpetuating the same environments and nurturing conditions over and over again reprodcuing the same experiencial outcomes.we are a product of our experiences...

Everyone has experiences. Wisdom is learning from those experiences. Greater wisdom is learning from others experiences. Greatest wisdom is learning from others wisdom.
The wisdom I have gained from my experience has shown me that there were many experiences from my environment and nurturing that were very counter productive to living a healthy life. The greater wisdom I having learned how not to reproduce those same experiences like many others mistakenly do. The greatest wisdom I can have is to learn from others' wisdom in how to produce the proper environment and nurturing conditions to become and live as a much more healthy person now and in my future and for the future of my sons and daughters and grandsons and grand daughters.
Knowledge without action is worthless.
With great power comes great responsibility.

"You're" an idiot
Anything and everything you say (can and) WILL BE used against you! Period.
They are not your friend nor are they trying to help you.
Don't ask me how I know this.
Come on guys, I can't be the only one who wants to know.
Brian, how do you know this?!![]()
???My Dad was a cop in the 88th precinct in Bedsty.
You are genetically predisposed in many ways, but who you become is created by your environment's influences in the early years and then personal choices later. Nurturing is so important for the young!
The foundation gets built when young and then you get to make the choices on how the rest is built.
I know your story personally as well.indeed...for most of my life i was a practicing alcoholic, with a variety of drugs thrown in. i am the person i am today beacause of this experience.
had i never been addicted myself i wouldn't have the empathy and compassion for those who are not as fortunate as i have been. i truely believe that those of us who have been able to overcome addiction are blessed...
15 years and counting...and i consider this the biggest accomplishment of my life, even though i credit GOD [there i said it] for having chosen me to be blessed with this gift of sobriety!!!!
Come on guys, I can't be the only one who wants to know.

I figured as muchI wasn't actually asking as much as being cheeky.
Like looking at the sun as soon as someone tells you not to lol.
I know your story personally as well.
The deliverance (for which I credit to God as well) from substance abuse changes many other characteristics about our personality (naturally, of course, as we were living under the influence of mind altering substances). The people, places and things that happened in my life that I used to explain (not excuse) my choices, actions and behaviors, for which I help in the greatest contemp, I now hold with the greatest compassion and empathy. To me, that is a transformation, a transformation that I cannot attribute to my self will, but to God.
Congratulations!

THE GREATEST THREAD ON AM EVER!
I figured as much
I honestly have no issue and am pretty damn transparent about my life's testimony. It's something I pride myself in - sharing my mistakes so my son (or someone elses son) doesn't have to.
if you look at all those who are sincere in their quest to beat addiction and fail, it is similar to the guy in the foxhole who see's his buddy standing next to him get his head blown off...you have to ask the question 'why me'?
i firmly believe there is a higher power at work here, because there is nothing special about me that would cause me to beat something that so many others have failed at.
congratulations to you also!!!
i don't think anyone is pointing all at nurture..has been mentioned, a combination of bothAs far as this goes (nature vs nurture specifically), I think it is important to not solely revolve around nurture. (As seems to be happening here, although I am skimming)
For example, the things that have happened in my life have most certainly affected who I am today. There is no denying that.
However, my brother and I grew up with the exact same hardships (only 1 year apart). Yet my outlook on life is, and has always been, the exact opposite of his.
After our father passed, he turned to drugs and failed school. While I turned towards God and ended up enlisting (as my father did when he was young).
Nature definitely played a major role in this difference between us. IME
I agree 100% and I am glad you mentioned that.As far as this goes (nature vs nurture specifically), I think it is important to not solely revolve around nurture. (As seems to be happening here, although I am skimming)

IME the very same hold true with my brother and I.
He is admittedly symptomatic - over-achiever, solitary, self-made, detatched, depending on noone nor confiding in anyone.
I became extrovertedly symptomatic (substance abuse and sexual deviancy) while he was introvertedly symptomatic (stated above). Both unhealthy to equal degrees.
contributed, surely i would agree; attributed would infer definitively was the cause or part of the cause - which is the whole basis for this age-old argumentI would venture to say that that fact attributed to our different outcomes.
indeed - same herewhich The same could probably be said for many other people.
My step-father was alcoholic and Mom was an enabler and co-dependent. My brother and I are only 2 years apart. I was more like our biological father and my brother was more like my mother and grandfather (her Dad). Although I know my mother loves us equally I feel she was more "connected" to him because of similar temperaments and still are to this day (from my observations - could be insecurities that remain and skew my perceptions). I was more difficult than my brother in terms of avoiding conflict with my father. I was outspoken and confrontational (challenged he reason and logic - go figure - who would have guessed it) and my brother was more passive and non-confrontational. Those dynamics brought us different attentions both positively and negatively from both parents.Could the difference in two brothers be attributed to unequal treatment while growing up? My brother and I are 22 months apart. We grew up in the same household, under the same set of circumstances, and yet we differ in so many ways. I am the first born and was treated differently than he was. Although this is a fault of MY parents, I assume that my case is not unique.
I state that because I would hope that parents are wise enough to learn from their "mistakes", or better yet, errors in judgement with older children. Though we grew in the same house, we were raised slightly different and I would venture to say that that fact attributed to our different outcomes. The same could probably be said for many other people.
Although my brother and I tend to be polar opposite in many ways our relationship is/was symbiotic complementary and synergistic. We have a deep loyalty to one another and an equal passion for fatherhood.
you always have a choice...but sometimes life gives you some crappy choices to choose from!!!

My only concern is that if he's associated with AF, he should have it in his sig, at least that way people know he is biased in some way and not totally objective toward AF products (which he seems to try do in other threads).
