Anyone own a Mossberg 500?

for the zombie apocolypse though, how good would a shotgun be really?
If you are decent with it, I'd surmise pretty good! Great for short and medium range, large hole left behind, and if using a wider choke patter, you don't exactly have to be dead on to hit a target because of the spray pattern! In all, you'd probably want to have a rifle and a pistol handy, too. I have a .270 to reach out longer distance, 30-30 for shorter range, and the single shot 20ga that I want to supplement with a Mossy 50. (Can't get rid of the shotgun...it was my grandfather's.)

Haha hell yeah, my zombie melee weapon of choice is a machette lol. And hell yeah shotguns are good because it is slighty easier to hit a small moving target like a zombies head lol.
What you gentlemen need is a good intermediate caliber semiautomatic rifle, like an AR15 or an AK. I think my next purchase is either going to be the S&W Sheild (single stack 9mm) or a good bolt action rifle in .243. They shoot flat as hell! That .270 of yours does as well good choice!

Been doing a little searching today and rethinking what I want. I've seen quite a few lightly used or even new variations of the 500 for MUCH less than the tactical one I eyeballed at a retailer. Doing the math and looking up the parts, I could go with the least expensive model - probably a JIC pistol grip only model - and outfit it with a good stalk, forend grip, and possibly even heat shield (just cause it looks cool) for less than the actual out-of-the-box tac model. Nice!!

2. Pump or semi-auto? Everyone seems to go with pump for the cool factor, but how's the semi- compare?

Thanks! The .270 was my grandfathers as well. I inherited everything I have except for the 9 and 357. I only shot it once, and only 3 shots to sight it in. At 50 yds, I shot 3 that were an inch off center in a grouping the size of a quarter. That's out of the box accuracy for a gun that's been long out of the box and NEVER shot before I did. Didn't even mess with the scope, just put it back in the case, took it out to hunt twice, gave up hunting becuase F U cold weather!, and now it just sits... waiting... lol

I think the 500 is available with a 5 shot or 8 shot tube, wood or synthetic stocks, etc. The 590 is basically a 500 with a bayonet lug and a steel trigger guard instead of the plastic one, a metal safety switch, and maybe a thicker barrel.
I honestly don't think its worth the price difference. I love my 500. If you get a 500 with the extended tube and the synthetic stock you are good to go in my opinion.
Semi-auto's you have to be careful with because some of them won't cycle birdshot well, etc. If you get a reliable semi-auto then theoretically you can outshoot a pump but I've seen guys in three gun run a pump like a sewing machine.
If I was going to get a semi-auto shotgun for a fighting weapon I would either get a benelli or a saiga 12. Both are $$$$$$$$
Most of the top three-gun competitors always run semi-auto's, if that tells you anything. If you are going to spend that kind of coin though like I said, get you a fighting rifle first. The great thing about pumps is that you get an excellent self-defense and general purpose weapon for cheap, they are better value in that sense. Semi's are maybe 15% better for 300% the cost. As long as you practice with it and don't short stroke, a pump is going to generally be more reliable unless you drop the coin on a benelli or a saiga 12.

Oh and they have cheap ass reflex sights available, wouldn't recommend them for a home defense weapon. If you are going to put a reflex sight on a home defense weapon look at an EOTech, Aimpoint, or perhaps one of Trijicons offerings (obviously not one of their magnified optics for a shotgun but they have reflex sights as well).

yeah gotta agree, slow reloads and low ammo capacity are a pump shotguns weakness
eta: and damnit zombies aren't supposed to be able to run!! I'm a huge romero movie fan haha

Oh and bro you are going to want to make sure you do your research if you put a reflex sight on a 12 guage. If you buy something that isn't rated for that kind of recoil you are going to wind up caught in the zombie apocolypse with a dead optic haha

Romero zombies shouldn't ever be much of a problem, as long as you either have enough ammo or a good enough hiding spot. On the other side of the spectrum, the "28 days later" variety... Yeah, that'd scare me just a wee bit more.
Reload time is an issue. However, I have a wife, and I have other guns. She can't shoot. So.... you guessed it! Reloading would be her job!
Yeah, and that's why I'll never get rid of 'em! The 20ga and .270 are his. The 30-30 is the one he bought FOR me. I was 13, walked into his kitchen, and there it was with towel over it. He just bought it from a guy at the bar. Old school Winny lever action, top eject (Model 70?). No plug in that bad boy either. It goes 10+1. HA!!

as long as you dont get swarmed or cornered you should be ok with any gun with enough ammo
personally i think i would go with a piston drive AR in .308 and an old reliable of a 1911 and / or Glock 19

Yeah I love my Glock 19s, I have three of them. I discovered them before it was cool haha. Great weapons, small enough for concealed carry yet large enough for competition, you can't beat it they are without question my favorite pistol. In fact I shoot them better than the larger glocks. My wife even carries one every day as well in her purse. She makes me proud haha

i just think the look of a 1911 is so damn classic.. more capacity would be nice like a Para Ordinance double stack. but for my size hand, it might be too big.

Exactly they are infected with "rage". They also could run and seemed a bit more intelligent than your average zombie. I do think they could be killed with a few body shots and didn't necessarily need head shots.

Shared this on FB earlier and Easy and I were talkin about it. Found this rail system for $163 on Gunbroker.com and definitely want to add it to my project list. The overall appearance of their display model is simply bad azz!! WANT!! Well, no scope, head's-up sight instead, and with light and laser on the end.

Scratch that. Just looked at the bank account. For my birthday, my wife screwed me (over), ROYALLY. Maybe it's a good thing I don't buy a shotgun. Right now, I'm very attempted to use it.

You can't go wrong with either a Mossberg 500 or a Remington 870. Both are tried and proven shotgun platforms. I myself prefer the Remington 870 for home defense purposes. I currently have the Remington 870 express tactical. It comes with a breaching choke (pointless for its intended purposes, but looks great), +2 round extension, ghost ring sites, and a picatinny rail to mount an optic if you so choose. I've added a laser-lyte tri-rail on the front to mount my surefire light. I've also modified the stock and put the Knoxx Remington 870 Gen 2 pistol grip on it. I absolutely love it. That again is a matter of personal preference. In a CQB situation, the pistol grip is a much better option, imo. The standard stock is great as well, but not when navigating effectively in a confined space.
I've shot guns my whole life and can say that the argument about best "loadouts" and ammo selection for home defense is completely subjective and personal preference based on your own individual situation. There are solid arguments for the use of both bird shot (reduced over-penetration risk); as well as for buckshot. Slugs are not a great option due to the serious over-penetration issues; hell, buckshot will also give the same type of issues as well. For those that don't like bird shot, try getting shot with 50-200 small lead pellets and tell me how you feel afterwards...I'm not agreeing or disagreeing in its use for home defense purposes. There are solid arguments on both sides, imo.
I prefer 00 Buck 2 3/4" (9 pellet) for my home defense load; but again, it's based on my living situation as well.

Brother, I know the feeling.
There are a lot of vendors on gunbroker that will do 5-6 month layaway plans as well. Most of my purchases through them have been that way. At least you lock up what you want and pay it off slowly; or all at once.
