Valid points, but we have to also consider that it could just be a further evolution of the sport. The forward pass, helmets made of composites rather than leather, face masks, shoulder/chest/thigh padding; they all came later. I agree that these men should be held accountable for their own decisions but measures should be taken to at least provide protection for them.
Seat belts, HANS device in Nascar, all the sh*t a baseball catcher wears, hockey equipment (x2 goalie equip); none of those were present when the sports first came to be but all have been implemented with success. These devices provide greater enjoyment for the fans, greater safety for the players, and a greater overall image for the respected sports (caring about their players.)
You guys both know that I agree with you on the matter of individual responsibility. But I can't help but think that players/teams/the league should also invest some of their earnings into safety and innovation so as to not have the current players having the same regrets as the former NFL players.
