hell, no!!!

at this point in my life a comfortable interior with lots of leg room takes priority over being able to blow the doors off the car next to me at the stoplight.

Oh, I like me some comfy!! Current ride has heated leather, bolstered buckets, lumbar, climate control, tele-steering wheel, and a nifty button that shuts down all the interior lights at night except half the speedo so I can see better. 9 speaker Harmon Kardon sound system. Radio/Tape/CD/Weather band. Yup. Not an American car.

SSSSSHHHH... I'm trying to ignore the OnStar module on the dash!! lol It is a GM-era Saab, but it's still a Saab. They aren't owned by GM anymore, though. If I had the loot to trade up, I'd most likely go with a new one.

One of the things I like most about it isn't the amenities, or the torque, or the little fun stuff, but the engine note. On the inside, you can hear the engine and it is the best sounding V6 I have ever heard. It actually growls!

Yep, and yet in some European countries topless is considered okay for broadcast television. AND violent crime against women is lower than in the US. :think:

When former NFL star Dave Duerson shot himself in the heart in order to preserve his brain for head-injury research, he raised hard questions for the league, its players and its fans.
 
I like the discussion on boobs better. :(
 
Hopefully the the players, the sportscasters, and the fans will be able to convince the league to take a look at this and make greater efforts to protect the players.

See, I am of the other side. These are grown ass mutha ****in men who know the risks going into the sport. The only thing we are doing now is pussifying the game and saying we are protecting the players.

Here are the facts. Going into the NFL will most certainly lead to physical problems and possibly mental problems in the future. You do not want those problems? Don't play the game. This is a game where the biggest and baddest attain the glory, not the smallest and weakest.

They can keep designing helmets the size of oldmobiles and pads like IBA, but a 330 pound man running at you full speed? Aint nothing going to keep you from taking a beating.

The only way to protect the players from themselves in the NFL? Don't let them play.

Don't forget the millions these asswipes get paid. Would it be worth paying them $10 million for 15 games where they are in a freakin plastic safety bubble? Part of the pay goes for their limited career life and the issues later.
 
..and our kids grow up idolizing this crap.

Isn't there a salary cap for the NFL, though? I don't know what the limit is. I'm not that big of an NFL fan because I root for the Browns and the repetative commercial breaks give me ADD.

Valid points, but we have to also consider that it could just be a further evolution of the sport. The forward pass, helmets made of composites rather than leather, face masks, shoulder/chest/thigh padding; they all came later. I agree that these men should be held accountable for their own decisions but measures should be taken to at least provide protection for them.

Seat belts, HANS device in Nascar, all the sh*t a baseball catcher wears, hockey equipment (x2 goalie equip); none of those were present when the sports first came to be but all have been implemented with success. These devices provide greater enjoyment for the fans, greater safety for the players, and a greater overall image for the respected sports (caring about their players.)

You guys both know that I agree with you on the matter of individual responsibility. But I can't help but think that players/teams/the league should also invest some of their earnings into safety and innovation so as to not have the current players having the same regrets as the former NFL players.

The bell curve you are purporting of the helmets isn't in your favor. In fact since the change in both NFL and NHL (NFL from leather and NHL to requiring helmets) the respect for the head has been lost and injury is on the rise, even with all these fancy technologies. Hell the extra pads the NHL is required to where now that wasn't in the past increases the weight of the individual increasing the striking force when a hit is made, leading to injury.

It is funny that all these have lead to a safer game with more injury.

I do agree that the NFL is a little lackadaisical with their concussion tests prior to letting a player hit the field again. The NHL is the leader in that category.

So with that said, could there be a conclusion that the placement of these safety features has helped to lessen the number of injuries that players sustain but cannot eliminate the bigger hits and 'game ending' hits that are becoming more common?

I suppose it could be looked at like a double edged sword. You 'protect' the player and they look at it as allowing them to hit even harder without hurting themselves. But because of that, when they connect with an opposing player it is much more violent than it was with fewer safety implements. Less equipment would more than likely increase self-preservation in the player doing the hitting.

Would no pads and larger rosters (to account for IR,) be an ultimately safer option than putting more armor on a battering ram? Or just tell the players to man up?

The equipment revolutionizes the sport, which acts as a wild card. Also, you are making the assumption that head protection only gets better in terms of safety, which isn't the case. There has been a trend for sacrificing protection for better maneuverability over the past few decades. Pads don't increase striking force, they slow you down, and your momentum doesn't really change as a result.

The best example would be goalie helmets/masks, which brought forth the butterfly goaltending style. Prior to the 1960's, the goalies entire head and face were unprotected. Hell no you're not going to drop to your pads, and let your face take a shot. The current goalie masks which were popularized in the 90's, (with the "cat eyes") still don't offer the greatest protection. Some of the protection is compromised better vision and maneuverability. You'll see some goalies like Osgood and Thomas, who wear more unique helmets that offer more head protection.

Mark Messier, Dominic Hasek, and Chris Osgood have all had to special order Cooper SK-series helmets (i.e. the Tron helmets) because they stopped making them in the 80's. To this day, they don't make helmets that can touch the SK series in terms of protection. When it comes to weight, nothing builds your neck muscles like wearing an SK series helmet for the duration of a game.

In conclusion, injuries increase as a result of two things: (1) players make ballsier moves because they feel protected (2) players are sacficing safety for lighter pads.
