HATED training fads (venting)

It also highly increases your odds of injury.

running in sneakers increases your chances of injury. when you run wearing shoes, you are striking with the heel and and then the toe. this puts all kinds of pressure on the joints and leads to shin splints etc. right here, a study done by Harvard states that fore-foot striking generates a smaller collision force. the only way to strike with the fore or middle foot is to wear no or minimal shoes.

you think vibrams cost a lot? walk into any shoe store and look how much the new "super cushion" sneakers cost

"Small studies have also shown that running barefoot somehow lessens joint impact by 12% and requires less energy than running with shoes. It’s possible barefoot runners land softer in the middle of the foot, put less strain on the rest of the body and are better able to use their toes to push off, creating a more natural foot strike.

“The way your foot hits the ground in a highly cushioned shoe is very forceful,” says Dr Najia Shakoor, the lead author of a study featured in the article. “When you are barefoot you have a natural motion from your heel to your toe. We now think that’s associated with more shock absorption.”

Of course, there are the obvious dangers – glass, blisters, bruising and infections to name a few. And not everyone is sold on barefoot running.

“Wearing no shoes is brilliant if you grew up walking or running this way like Kenyan athletes who have unlimited access to sandy and soft, grassy ground,” says Lorraine Jones of the Society for Chiropodists and Podiatrists.

The problem is most of us run on road or paved trail, which is extremely hard on our feet and bodies. I, for one, can’t imagine running barefoot (unless I’m on the beach). I love my Asics."

Hence the shoe market trying to mimic bare feet, but with a layer of protection. There are others besides vibram getting into it. Even Nike has a version.

well if its the surface that makes a difference, then maybe running with shoes on concrete isnt the best form of exercise. find a park or a dirt trail where running barefoot is the best, and then wear Vibrams to protect your feet from cuts and scratches. i dont know but for some reason i dont trust child slaving corporations like Nike etc. that brand new "supercushion" they market is probably just another piece of foam. to me it makes sense to go back to our roots, we were running barefoot for hundreds thousands of years before good ol nike came about to rescue us from our misery.

For sure. I have proven that myself, since I was a rural kid on a huge acreage who ran bf everyday all over the property. I was always first in T&F. Add in chopping wood and bringing wheelbarrow loads higher than my head and you had a kid who ended up also armwrestle champ of the town. Never underestimate natural hard work. :ninja:

basically the reason why our feet look the way they do (going down in size like AT&T bars) is because we have been stuffing our feet into narrow shoes our whole lives. pictures of people who have never worn shoes like that show their toes being spread apart and equal length, therefore giving the person more stability while walking/running.

Nike Frees are comfortable and ok for a long slow jog, but thats about it. Terrible for sprinting or anything that involves the slightest change in direction. They also wear down really fast.

Here are my two current trainers, both have a minimal heel. The prior has more lateral and arch support, the latter has barely any difference in high between mid foot and heel. Both are much better then Free's

PS: I think I should note, that for the majority of the human population, we have been running in some form of sandals for the past 10k years. From ice age times, to greek and roman, to even the tarahumara, they ran in some form of sandals.

On that note, I wear these for runs:

I also use Chuck's for pulling and squats. I should also note that I am barefoot during MMA work and that I wear flip-flops about 95% of the rest of the time.

I read this thread the other day and laughed. And then I noticed the most hilarious thing. A 20 year old kid with a bandanna, underarmour shirt(my 4 year old could wear) a bleached mohawk, and adorable little toesy sockshoes! And guess what he was doing? Sets of 2 on flat bench with 10 minutes between sets. PRICELESS.

I told you.

There is a high correlation between Vibrams and douche. It's science.

While we're venting...

People who ask my advice in the gym about something, start to listen, don't get told what they want to hear, then begin to debate with me. Stop wasting my time.

Or, ask advice, you give them advice ("my shoulder hurts" stop doing presses behind your neck and ungodly amounts of upright rows and front raises), listen to you, then turn around and keep on doing what they were just doing. Again wasting my time.

Puahahaha happens ALL the time!!

Incline treadmill w/ hands on the railings.

Talking to you while you're under the bar.

Okay.....okay

I've found the worst fitness fad of all time (worse than shakeweight). Laughing Lunges...

........you must be trollin cuz. That laugh removed any shred of attractiveness I felt of that girl while the video was on mute. Damn what an annoying laugh.

Haven't seen anyone talk about curling 3 inches from where you rack dumbells. Am i the only one that gets pissed at **** like that? Take a few steps back so the rest of us dont have to watch out for swinging dumbells. On the topic of curls, if ur curling and looks like ur bowling or some ****, straighten up ur damn form

Asking me what I take, then when I tell them they give me a look like yeah right. Then I really want to kill them, honestly if I wouldn't go to jail I'd clear this world of a few gene pools.

even though they are "trying" to help, people that offer a spot and lift as hard as they can at the first sight of struggle to lock out a rep, give me some damn time to get it on my own for christs sake

Standing, crunching, whatever on bosu balls has to be my least favorite training fad. Ugh. Aside from that, I hate seeing people walk on treadmills for extended periods of time.

This isn't a fad, but it's also something that pissed me off in the gym...I heard a group of women talking in the gym the other day and one of them, who was fairly petite, talking about how she burnt 2300 calories in a two hour workout. Sorry, but no you ****ing didn't. I managed to burn about 1300 calories in an hour a few times and I'm a 200 lb. man with really good cardio and it was SERIOUSLY hard. A 120 lb woman can not burn that. So many people that don't know anything tell other people this nonsense and they believe it, then change up their routines and diet based on crap information.

Last night, a guy was on a bluetooth earpiece and talked to himself the entire time he was at the gym. What year is it, 2003?

Biggest pet peaves at the gym..hmm.....
1. Guys that think they are a bad a@@ becuase they got a strong bench..or are on some ph's or juice and think they are tough cuz they are big.
2. Guys that can bench alot and think they are gods....but never factor in things like..how much they arch their back(which makes their flat bench a decline) or the fact that they have t-rex arms and only move the bar 10 inches...or the fat blowfish fellas that also have t-rex arms and bounce the bar 6-8 inches..
3. guys who have the worse form and use tons of weight and try to star everyone down...lol..(punked more than few out).
4. The juice crew that is on so much gear that they are too pumped to wipe their a@@ before they even start to workout.
5. The super sweater who never wipes off the benches and wears the same stinky shirt that reaks of ammonia.
6. Guys who have now discovered mma..and think they are the sh$t becuase they watch the fights and train with some guys who have no credentials, skill, or any f^ckin clue about any martial art..and are tapout geared up from head to toe.
7. And guys who come behind me and try to do the same excercise i did and try to do more weight than i did...lol...but never can..( except bench..i gotta 78 in reach with ape arms and bench is my weak spot becuase i gotta puch the bar almost 3 damn feet...but still get 405.)
8. guys who sit on the benches/ machines for 10 min between sets writing in there journal.( make note of the lift, set number, and reps..then keep going).
9. the guy who puts three towells on different benches and machines to claim his spot and show he is on all of them..(love it when its on the one i gotta use cuz that towell hits the floor..lmfao)
10. The juice heads that think that they are gods of the gym and are so bad..( if only they had a clue.)

The best shoe, in my opinion, is a good cross-trainer. It will cover all of your needs. A real shoe store will properly measure your foot, watch you run on a treadmill (to view how your foot strikes the ground, pidgeon toed, etc.), and will examine your arch needs.

You will definitely pay more at a store like that, but you get a shoe that will actually work with your body and support you.

After doing those tests, they pretty much eliminated 90-95% of the shoes they stocked as an option for me. They set me up with a pair of Nike's which are probably the best pair of athletic shoes I have ever owned.

Guess what shoes they don't stock? Vibrams. Once I see marathon runners and Iron Man competitors using Vibrams and winning, nevermind...that won't happen.

Just wanted to point out that I see people run marathons in five fingers, barefoot, and other minimlist shoes and finish in really good time. True, I have not seen any win yet, but many who I have seen win were wearing minimalist racing flats which are pretty flat, minimal cusioning, etc leaving not much there. Many of the big companies are making shoes focused on the same concepts.

Not for everyone, but they have a place. In fact, they have helped me improve on my running. I had a tendency to heel strike to much and they helped me to correct that and helped to strengthen muscles in my lower legs which improved my mechanics as well as helps to lead to less lower leg fatigue.

Born to Run is a great book to read to get more info on running like this.

Good thread

why don't you guys spend more time training, and less time worrying about what everyone else is doing??? lol, never seen so many judgmental f*cks in one thread... reminds me of a bunch of sorority b*tches

I do hope you see the irony of you being judgmental of us while complaining about us be judgmental (paradox much)? I'll save you some time, just go stand in front of a mirror and repeatedly tell that other person you see that he is a "judgmental f*ck". Tell me who wins.

If I wanted to be judgmental, I might choose to mock your self taken, stereotype, shirtless, iphone in bathroom mirror, myspace photo, but hey I won't.

Are you talking sh*t about people using their spare time to post nonsense on a forum instead of "training more"?. Way to be the typical idiotic hypocrite. No 1 gives a f*ck what you think dude, so stop being female trying to stir up some drama via the internet and go post about your latest cycle

Yes I was... hypocritical? maybe a little bit, but I stick up for those you put down, so there is a difference.

I really technically did not judge you.... I made suggestion to help your training, then simply paired you with an adjective describing the actions you were displaying in this thread, and finally compared it to a remembrance of mine.

I was simply trying to deter you from continuing the douchebag meatball stereotype given to bodybuilders, but now my feelings are hurt because you don't like my picture. :crying:

the douchebag meatball stereotype given to bodybuilders

I'm sorry, what was it you were just talking about? The douchebag meatball stereotype? Again, I would reference your picture for exhibit A.

Perhaps you didn't actually read any of our discussion on free running and its benefits v. possible harms because there weren't any colorful pictures. Plus, three pages of comments? I can understand how that could be way too much reading to catch up on (not like any threads go for 20+ around here). Your strategy of just barging in and proclaiming alpha male dominance may work around your friends (I'm sure they are spray tanned and come complete with V neck shirts and chin strap facial hair), but around here that won't cut it.

It's kinda ironic because I make fun of and laugh at BB'ers more than anyone.

OMG GOLD!!

I thought this thread was pretty good, I laughed, I sympathized, I learned a little, watched a few videos, pretty much good stuff to me, thanks.

You make a reasonable argument, and then cloud it with put-downs and ignorance. No I did not read the 20+ pages in this thread, nor would I waste the time, when i can be reading documents of meaning. So maybe you were not one originally described in my first statement. However, you decided to defend and offend in your response, and now you batter with primitive and un-original insults.

You have now referenced my picture twice, and have really only continued to add evidence to the fact that you pass judgment on everyone, and either are not happy with yourself, or just envy others.

quite a change of writing styles?

avi picture aside, you do happen to come into threads and try to project a tough guy persona. especially in this one. if you got nothing to add to the discussion just keep browsing to the next one, you know.

Can't we all just get along?!!Come on guys we all have a passion for the same thing here lets not forget that instead of bashing each other.Just trying to help.

What you fail to realize is, you barged in here and condemned the people in this thread as the "douchebag, meathead stereotype" all while personifying that stereotype. That is the reason for the harsh responses. As far as me passing judgement on everyone and me being unhappy and all that blah blah.... No. I only passed judgement on you (your online behavior more specifically). Prior to this, we discussed the pros v. cons of free running/minimalist shoes. There was quite a bit of disagreement, but it was a good convo and no one was divisive (enter you). So just drop the "I'm awesome" sh*t and we will move on and get back to the thread.

I have yet to see anyone wearing barefoot's at my gym. I only see the people who snatch gwar out the chatahoochee river wearing them. My 18 year old cousin is dying for a pair, so you probably outta get used to them.

I don't like these new hologram energy bracelets. retarded, but hey, whatever floats your boat.:spankme:
