Baseball Thread 2009

Agreed. Players like Satchel, Cool Papa Bell, Josh Gibson, etc really got hosed. There's no blacks or hispanics in the record books from that era simply because baseball wasn't integrated yet. No doubt the talent was there though.

Pretty much. Tearing my heart out, inch by inch, all summer.

So...........looks like Maurice Jones-Drew is creeping up pretty high on some fantasy draftboards. Interesting. Hope Brandon Jacobs can play all 16 this year. :wall:

I'd like to see these old great hitters hit in today's game.

Back then they didn't have 3 or 4 flame throwers coming out of the pen in the later innings. You faced the same tired pitcher the whole game, 4 or 5 at bats against the same guy.

Not to take anything away but it's a lot harder to hit in today's game I think. This is why you'll probably never see a .400 hitter or a triple crown winner again.

GICH!

Pujols has a decent shot at the Triple Crown, but the HR's and RBI might start slowing down as managers across the NL collectively pull their heads out of their asses and start walking him almost everytime...as they should.

I think there's something to what you were saying though. Baseball is such a technical game...things are so specific, that players/teams/coaches/etc are so much more specialized and advanced now.

Word. And there are a lot of good hitters out there that for one guy to win each of those 3 categories is pretty damn hard.

Bonds walked over 200 times one year. I don't understand why they keep pitching to Pujols. He's that locked in this year.

Wow... never seen someone who really enjoys baseball want to take the bat out of the best baseball players hands. Even when a phenom pitches against my team, I just lavish watching him pitch. Lincecum killed our lineup, but it was fantastic to watch him hurl the ball.

I hate intentional walks across the board... pitch the damn ball, or pull up your panties and go home.

x2, emphatically.

Don't get me wrong....I'm a HUGE baseball fan, and if I were a Cards fan, I'd be yelling "BOOOO" at the top of my lungs when Albert got an IBB........but in the name of all logic and rational thinking, there's no reason for NL managers to pitch to Pujols. It's stupid. If I were managing an NL team, I'd walk him almost every time.

I think Pujols will miss the Triple Crown only by average...

Homeruns and RBIs should be a lock.

See, I'm thinking the opposite. As the walks start piling up (if NL managers have a brain in their heads, they will) it'll be harder for him to keep up the HR's and RBI...while at the same time, it may help him keep his average high. Guys like Fielder, Ibanez, Howard, etc might be able to catch up in HR and RBI while Pujols is taking 4 wide ones.

I hated when they walked Bonds all the time.

However, it's the opposing managers job to win the game, not to entertain the fans and lose.

If Pujols gets walked a lot his average will stay high.

Bonds's average was .370 and .362 when he was walked 198 and 232 times respectively. Had he not been walked that much there's no way he would've finished with that average.

I might as well be the first one to report on this. Mark Buehrle threw a perfect game against the Rays today. 27 hitters up, 27 hitters down. No walks, no hits, no runs.....perfect.

F*ck Mark Buehrle. I'll grant him that it's a historic event which rarely happens and is considered a crown jewel of a pitcher's career. However, I hate the Sh!te Sox and I hate their manager and I hate what they stand for. They're whole team is a bunch of thugs and their fans are thugs too.

There's no sour grapes here because it was against the Rays. Their offense just took a diarrhea today. Total butt-piss. They should've been able to get something off Buehrle because he's really NOT all that good. But today he was perfect.

I'd take a guy like Buerhle anyday. Dude gives you 200+ innings every year, is 42 games over .500 for his career with a lifetime ERA of 3.78. 10 seasons played, 9 of them with a winning record. Not to mention the no-no AND the perfecto. Starting to amass quite the resume.

Buehrle is a pretty solid pitcher... Not an overly dominant guy, but turns in solid season after solid season. I wouldn't mind him on my team.

We're on the same page. Pretty solid resume, and he's still reasonably young! Could conceivably get the 200 career wins and MAYBE 2000 Ks - plus the lifetime WHIP is a solid 1.26.... 200 wins and 2000 Ks would carve out a spot in the Hall.

Man, even though he's thrown the no-no and the perfecto.....he just doesn't seem like "one of those guys" that would come up with HOF talk to me. But, I think you're right...if you can pitch your way to 200 W's and 2,000 K's with a good ERA and a ring on your finger....just might get in.

Buehrle is going to retire in a couple of years. Fam is more important to him.

He could be the last pitcher to make it "near or beyond" 300 wins IMO with his stuff. Workhorse year in and year out, smooth delivery.

Yep, got the ring - and played a huge role for their championship squad.

He's definitely a sneaky prospect for the HOF, but like you said - how do you say no to that resume?

Also, this has only been the 18th perfect game in MLB HISTORY!!! That's nuts.
