What options are there for someone beyond the financial breaking point?

Just wondering, what options other than the whole bankruptcy thing. Honestly it doesn't even scare me anymore. But I would prefer to make good on all my debts.

Does anyone know a good company or process to go through to line things up and begin a path of recovery?

If this next week goes well and I do get these 2 jobs, I should be making a lil more than I used too (still not much) and can get the ball rolling really.

Just looking for any input from anyone. Getting ready to ebay/craigslist 90% of my possessions. Even my old warhammer 40K stuff :sick:

I made it a point to secure a few things with the last bit of flow I had awhile back.

I have had 6 job set ups fall through on me, one of which wasted 2 months of time...

Worst luck, or the world hates me x.x

FWIW...

If you have credit card debt or unsecured loans...here's my story. I hate to sound like an advertisement, but I am a very satisfied customer from one place. I've never admitted this publicly before. About 8 or 9 years ago I was done dating a "gold-digger" type (I was thinking with the wrong head) and realized I had about $30K in credit card debt from this girl....vacations all over the world, the best restaurants, casinos, etc. Someone in a veterans' group I belong to recommended American Consumer Credit Counseling to consolidate my debt and pay off all the cards quickly. I researched the company and found out they are one of the few such companies that are an honest non-profit and not a shill company owned by a credit reporting bureau. Anyhow, they helped me set up a payment plan with my creditors, lowered all of APRs to around 4%, and I paid a minimum of $645 a month (overpaid when I could, usually by a large amount) and had the whole thing paid off in less than three years. It made a huge difference in my life. I don't know how they would work with secured loans or anything else, but for credit card debt, it changed my life and my spending habits for good.

Wish I could give you some tips on a job...I know federal law enforcement is hiring like crazy, I have a lot of friends in that area if you are interested (PM please). Here in Vermont we don't have an unemployment problem and there are "Help Wanted" signs everywhere from retail to skilled trades. Although I realize the climate isn't for everyone. My fiance is a manager at a huge retail/commercial agricultural place and they can't find enough reliable help, they are always hiring like crazy. Of course the employers want workers that are reliable, not just any Joe off the street, but people here seem pretty decent for the most part (I've only been here a couple years).

Cut costs where you can, but do not completely cut out recreational stuff from your life, you need it to keep sane. Sure you may want to cut down what you spend each month or each year on video gams and DVDs, however it would be a mistake to cut that out completely, because you'd go out of your mind without a little normal relaxing activity in your life.

To save money on a reliable car, consider eBaying your car and buying a cheaper car at a government auction. I've been going to those auctions for almost 20 years (yikes I feel old) with my uncle, and there are bargains all over the place. Most people go to buy unmarked police cruisers and work trucks from the highway departments. So if you can settle for having to repaint a marked cruiser, or a boring government-style unmarked sedan (Malibu, Impala, Taurus, etc.), you can get a car in top condition, but with somewhat high mileage (100K-150K usually when they are retired) for about $100 to $300. Or a seizure/unclaimed vehicle with an unknown maintenance history, for around the same money, depending on the make and model. That is in Massachusetts, I have absolutely no clue how other states do it.

You could always do like the federal govt and apply for some more credit cards to keep going and when those are maxed out, just apply for a few more to keep the interest current.

Who knows. There's no easy answer. Bartending is an option. Avoid banruptcy at all costs. It will haunt you for the next ten years.

You would be surprised...even the restaurants are booked. I had a warehouse job lined up, drug tested, ready to go, they bailed. Had a metallurgy job lined up, drug tested, al already to go, they let 18 people go and bailed. I had a roofing sales job that didnt pan out and wasted 2 months and tons of gas. I had the whole Iron Workers thing going on as well. Didnt pan out...

Seriously, its like they tell me I am hired then all hell breaks loose.

Currently going for a simple job at Valvoline and with the dispatch(newspapers). I just need money coming in so I can find someone to help with these cards.


Methusaleh my debt is a lil bit more than that thanks to a car and student loans(actuall CC debt is about half my debt, 7K is student loans I shouldnt worry bout/count anyways) and my car was stupidity on my part and I am paying too much.

I cant call someone to help until I get stupid work lined up, then I can call and say here is my income levels, what can I do,etc.... At least I think thats how it works. I know one CC card jacked my interest rate STUPID, :afro: I will look into that company as soon as I get paychecks coming. Part of the reason I am a bit shy on my log is honesty, I dont have food. :paranoid:

Which I may lose my car this month. Quite likely Actually. Screw it, Bring it :mischievous: Life hates me imma laugh in its face at least...I will save the tears for my pillow. Honestly i wish there was a way to return my car, and get me a beater. I bought it when I was pissed at my ex, and full of pride(so I deserve this for being an idiot) and i am paying too much for it. Really a decent beater would make me happy for awhile, then I know a few people in the long run who could hook me up.

Honestly, I just want my life back. And my cell back on. Never realized how useful those bastards were.:sick:

A friend may hook me up with Air Guard, which is the most useless easy branch to do....So I could do it even hating the government :laugh2: but it may net a 20K sign on bonus, and with a 2 year waiting time after enlisting to go to training, those 2 years get counted as service time off. So only have to be guard for 4... I hate the idea, I really do, but man, there is no where to go, you know?

Bioman, do you mean police vehicles? Or the other kind of fleet.

I have muscle, girls always think I am a great guy, but damn does your confidence go when your in these shoes... Makes me a freaking loser.

I've also had a bit of a run of bad luck in terms of career stuff. I've had two offers fall through, one offer 30% below what I was making before, and one temp position that was supposed to last 6 month last 5 weeks. I think recessions are hard on everyone, especially young men who are just starting their professional careers and who don't have a lot on their resume or contacts.

I'm not too terribly worried about it...there's nothing you can't achieve if you just keep working at it, and right now that means working really, really hard to find a decent job, ie cold calling employers, networking, spending minimum of 5 hours per day looking for work, etc.

I am ashamed at my life. I have muscle, girls always think I am a great guy, but damn does your confidence go when your in these shoes... Makes me a freaking loser.

Yeah I think this is normal but really I'd just focus on doing responsible things to improve your life and try not to worry about the rest.

I too am taking a break from finding a new relationship (my old one split apart in large part because of the fact that I've been out of work for about 7 months) until I find a decent job. Dating is a nightmare if you've got self esteem stuff going on, and until I get this resolved I'm just not going to get back out there.

Too bad you don't live up in MN. We got quite a few low entry jobs open. Like where i work... sorry to hear about your finacial probs man. I knwo the feeling as i just spent 33000 on a degree i still havent found a use for and after the marines spent like 3k on my ex... just broke up with my girl to focus more on my career and getting my life on track before i do anything else...

Driving a semi doesnt sound so bad right now, besides its killer money, my dad did back in his day and netted sometimes up to 70g....only problem I have is horrible with directions, and I get white line sleepiness. Long road trips and I am ready to crash into things.
 
NTB is a tire chain. Man it sucks when you get into a bad situation like this. Salllie Mae can wait. Have you talked to your bank about the car and negotiating something? My friend called his and actually gave it back to keep a repo off his credit basically. He was still on the hook for a few thousand after they auctioned it. the credit card companies are nasty, tell me it's not chase manhatten bank. Anyone else will probably work out a payment plan that will lower your rate and remove teh ridiculous fees they added to your account. Discover dropped my rate from 19 back to .99% and removed about $2000 in fees they had tried to make me pay. the kicker was I had to set up a direct debit payment plan where they take $80 a month. I set up a seperate account and only deposit $25 a week into it so if they get greedy, they can't get any more of my money.

Check out Dave Ramsey's website and his money makeover. It's a really good book and plan, even though it won't put cash in your account today. He can tell you how to do the credit couseling service stuff without paying someone to do it for you.

When I was 15 days from losing my house, $4,000 late on house, wife kept losing jobs and getting lower paying ones, about $15,000 in credit card debt, $10,000 of which had been placed as a judgement against me by Chase Manhatten, sometimes nearly minus $1,000 in my checking account (wachovia will let you spend all you want, they just take $35 each time), and a wife that was about to lose it, the only place I had to turn was the Lord. The one verse that helped get me through was Malachi 3:1-12 or so. I decided I was going to be naive enough to believe that God would do like His word says and put him to the test. A couple years later, wife has great paying job, 3 times what she had been making for years, house is fine, bills payed, and we have been able to give away more money the last 2 years than we ever have. During the struggle, we had to fight and do our part to be responsible and keep our focus on the Lord, and all along, we didn't ose the house, didn't lose the car, things that shouldn't have worked out did, praise God. I don't know where your faith lies, but I would recommend inviting the Lord in to help you out, because he can turn the impossible into the possible. I know, he did for us. Join the military. Serve your country, get a signing bonus, and work for the only employer who guarantees 2 decent paychecks every month for the next 4-6 yrs.

agreed I used to do it and I used to make over 20$/hr after my minimum wage plus gratuities, no lie when I would close Id leave with 140-150 almost every night, needless to say I ran around like crazy, and blew a ton of weight, but I always had cash on me, and lots of money for new supplements.

I hink waiters/waitresses work harder than most think, but it can be rewarding to serve people.

Give it a try if you have a 500 credit score because you've fallen behind on your payments for several years. Good luck!

Banks will give you some breathing room on debt-to-income if you have good credit history. But, in my years as a banker, your application went str8 to file 13 unless your bankruptcy was at least 7 years old and even then, you had some explainin' to do. It is very subjective and prejudice as far as credit and DTI.

On a serious note, I had a friend I met at my last college whose Dad was hospitalized and he owned crazy money to the hospital, like $50,000 I think. Something happened to his fathers insurance and nothing was covered. He quit his job, and someone got him the hookup in some co-ed stripclub in TN. He said he never took a night off, and also did crazy bachelorette parties all the time, and got all he money in a couple months.

Obviously this is a rare case,... lol, but on a serious note, I hope it all works out for you bro.
 
I have 2 buddies who were strippers in Toronto...kept it from us till after the fact, pretty fckn hilarious when you think of it.

I think the point is to NOT let it go on for years before being proactive.

I imagine someone carrying a 800+ FICO for 8 to 10 years and choosing to file bankruptcy even before they are 30 day past due simply because you were laid off and chose to no longer rob Peter to pay Paul is a bit different than someone who has be delinquent month after month for years and carries a 500.
 
My first CC that is abotu to reach 3 months deliquent is coming up. The roofing sales thing a few months ago gave me enough to pop things back up, one CC is like 15 days late, one almsot 3 months, and 1 I think almost 2. I dont have a problem paying the bills just need the money.

Car payment comes first, screw credit if I cant drive! I had a 750 before I lost my job, how bad can 1 year of credit issues really hurt me? Being a waiter at Ocharlies is sounding kinda nice, my ex used to come home some nights from steak n shake with over 100 bucks. I wont mind, the work. Problem is, will they hire me -.-. I am clean cut and such, but dont have the prettiest smile you know.

I will toss in some restaurant apps today, then again I been hearing from friends they are packed as well. Dont forget the turnover rates for jobs have slid to a crawl >.<

I am calling a recruiter today for the Air Force. I dont care no more, if I have to sacrifice a few years to get my life back, tis worth it. Marines dont get any sign on bonuses, and Army is so full infantry is what every one is pushed into anymore around here. Besides

I was in the Army once, discharged with an RE3, so I need a waver to come back to the military anyways....old stories not for retelling...

I would be happy even if I was working 70 hours a week, if I just had the work to work. Calling my friend today to have him jump on his boss to set up my interview with valvoline, and another friend is trying to hook me up with another part time Job.

Personally, at your age, a bankruptcy will come and go before you know it. IOW, better now while you're young than later in life.

Two things; in a Chapter 7 you can keep your car, but no bankruptcy will discharge your student loans.

As much as the military has to offer with he GI bill, signing bonuses and health and housing benefits - you are leasing your life. FFT.

true, I dont think its quite bankruptcy time yet. its just horribly close to that is why I am upset. If I ant get the tracks back online in 2 months time, then yeah I am gona have to bite the bullet.

If I can swing by with jsut 1 bad year of crap though, call a company simliar to what has been listed in here, get my interest rates fixed up, and payments lined up good, wouldnt that be better though? Honestly when it comes to banking, I have little knowledge. I know +#s is good and -#s is bad....:privateeye: and my bank account is nice and - :privateeye:

Just need 2 jobs and 500 bring home a week...and I could have this all paid off and fixed in 2-3 years, much cleaner and fixing my credit as I go in comparison to a bankruptcy.

Also ticked because school is at a stand still during this.


I know joining the military is signing my life away. Honestly I dont mind that, if it was a respectable government. It is my bitter hatred of this nations current state that presents the issue. I will post up how my talk with the Air Force and Air Guard recruiters go.

This is all simply life schooling me and making me wiser for the future. I am at least going to walk away from this with a lesson and some knowledge and ot be a better keeper of my money.

See Air Guard here aparantly has a 2 year waiting list. But if I join, those 2 years count as time served, and my sign on bonus is guaranteed still in contract. So when I finally do go, by the time I am done with training 3 of 6 years are served...and I have 15-20 grand sign on bonus money. By then I may be debt free from working my arse off, so that 20 grand will either finish off my debt, or make a hell of a down payment for a house! I am doing a lot of thinking, making plans, trying to get this straight. THough it would bring no immediate aid, it would put a light at the end of the tunnel.

I just have to clear military service with my personal feelings about ministry and such...
 
I went through the same thing back in 02-03,and you know what i did??Credit Consolidation. In my eye's it's probably the only option you have. They roll everything thing into one monthly payment,and cut the interest rate's in half on all that you owe. It is better than chapter 11,and within 2years my credit was back to status quo.

BTW, I drive a rig for a living. It is a lucrative profession. I am home every night in my own bed,not in a truck. I make 23 a hour,and i am working 10-12 sometimes 14 hours a day,OT after 8. You do the math. Everybody is so worried about the economy right now,i can honestly tell you that the company i work for is one of the biggest LTL carrier's in the industry,and we are busy beyond anything that you could imagine.

For those that are laid-off and can not find work i feel sorry for you.
 
I still say you can negotiate the same types of terms and agreements yourself that any credit consolidation can do for you. Why pay someone to do something you can do yourself for free. Also if going the restaurant route, make sure you hit up the upper scale ones first. Bigger checks usually equate to bigger tips not counting plain ol' stingy people. Look for whatever you have in your area that is a step or two above O'Charley's and somewhere maybe you wouldn't eat because it's jsut expensive. Start high as you can.
 
You got a point. I was just saying. I wouldn't want to deal with those CC people right now. They are a bunch of ravenous beasts who want there money. Just wait until Fredrick J. Hanna and associate's start calling to collect.

I don't mean to pry into anything too personal here..but what skills do you have to market to the work force?? This was a question asked to myself when i was out of work in 02-03,and i realized that i had none. That is why i chose to be a Driver.

If you are interested PM me and i might be able to help,the company i work for is hiring full-time driver's and part time dock help. The part time dock help pay's like 15 an hour.
 
Oh yeah, BTW..The company i work for has over 450 service center's nationwide,including Canada. Trust me,if you live near a major metro area,they have one.

Don't take this the wrong way but your definition of a man is quite distorted or at best based on temporal transient insignificant qualifiers.

Develop a purpose and identity that transcends circumstances and situations and you will find tremendous freedom and empowerment.

I may be interested.

Job qualities I have are
Qualified to drive any kind of forklift(stand up/sit down, gas/electric) as wel las cherry pickers and palley riders and scissor lifts.
Also have done replen lead, and inventory so I have those skills
Lead positions I have held thanks to my usual rapid advancement when I am working somewhere.

All warehouse only though >.<

My dad drove a rig, I dont mind long hours either. I am just afraid of the white line daze I get when I drive more than 30 minutes.:happysad: A few times in my life I popped my eyes open right before I would have been talking to death face to face.

I dont dodge psychologist and meds. But no way am I putting SSRI's in my body... I know my mind well enough to know that its too risky to mess around with it. I have been quite unstable before in the past(suicidal) My brain is not making me like that today, I may feel crappy but I am too afraid to risk altering that. Counseling I wouldnt mind, but I have not the money for it :happysad: Besides I remember all the lessons I learned from my last psychologist I had in 05. I apply them well.

I dont take it the wrong way at all.

I am reading "Reduce me to love" by Joyce Meyers atm now.

Trust me dude, being Bi-polar i know the feeling of hating meds. You don't have to take them and i make it a point to tell and doc that i won't. But you need someone to talk too, i'd prolly be dead if it wasnt for some of my friends beating that logic into my head.

going on 3 years without an episode, best feeling in my life of being under control. Now i just gotta drop 5% bf :P

Hey man, Ive been in the same boat as you...tired too many ssris and on day said enough....exercise and the desire to be a better person keeps me alive, plus unconditional love from a woman...good luck on your continued recovery, and on another note moderately dosed amino acid 5 htp seems to help me as well.

Read Joyce Meyer's Battlefield of the Mind. If you have read it already, read it again. AWESOME BOOK! Why not do a chaplancy if you are interested in some sort of ministry? What kind of ministry are you thinking about? There are many things you can do to grow the kingdom that aren't going to seminary and preaching. Since you are interested in ministry, maybe now is the time to really grow your spiritual faith in the Lord. Really take a giant leap of faith and allow God to direct things, open doors, provide for you. His word says he will, if we just had the faith of a mustard seed. Make a decision to be crazy enough that you will allow God to do things you can't. Have faith that God will do the miraculous in your life today. God can break the bondages in your life, whether they are mental in nature, financial, health related. His word says he has done it and since you are a child of Christ, you get the same benefits as the disciples did. Just take claim to what is already been provided for you.

I'm not going to argue the point with you but...

...much changes in ones mind over a 4 years period especially between 18 and 22. New experiences, new challenges, new traumas, new confussions, new responses...it is a perpetual process. To say your brain is static and you have it covered by 22 from lessons learned at 18 is selling yourslef and the life experience short.

I always seek counsel as the life experience is an ongoing transient process of self discovery...mind blowing things, both positive and negative, happen daily when your eyes are trained to see.

Not to mention your enemy loves it when you stay isolated in your own head.

I have that book, but havent read it. Ironically 1 week before my ex announced she was getting married I ordered Battlefield of the mind.....then on that day, the grooms father who cares alot for me, gave me "reduce me to love" I think I was supposed to read these books back then 2 years ago LOL. God kinda set it up.

I am going through reduce me to love right now, and battlefield of the mind is right after it.

My desire is to go into youth ministry, since I basically do it often already and I love it.

I have been told by three separate people I am going to be a missionary. After a mission trip to Mexico, I can really actually see that. Never have I felt like I did there.

Our current youth pastors are actually leaving, but due to the trials I been experiencing I am not an option for replacement. Even though the youth pastor has told me before he would like me to take over(this was like a year ago) IT will go by default to my ex and her husband likely, who told the head pastor they dotn want it or have the calling for it, but he has a woody for her husband cuz he grew up there. So she said they may have to do it temporarily :privateeye:

OR anotehr girl from our church who is really more aligned to it has also been asked. I think she would do good.

I would LOVE to do it, but its not even right for me to ask with me just nwo starting to overcome my spiritual warfare issues.

SO ministry has to wait.

Though for some reason every one at church thinks I am supposed to be doing good things in my future. IMO they are crazy or seeing things I dont.
 
God can use you before you can "get straightened out". God can transform you so to speak and others will see that and know God gets the glory for it. If you have a calling and it feels like you are under attack, realize who the attacker is. He doesn't attack unless you are a threat to him and a warrior for Christ. Kick Satan in the teeth and put him back in the place Jesus put him. He knows he is powerless but tries to convince you otherwise. If he does, then you stay in bondage, often times to yourself and your head. Step on the enemy, don't take "the voices" or whatever is going on in your head. You don't have to accept them, rebuke them in the name of Jesus and the enemy MUST FLEE. Once you refuse to accept what the enemy wants to give you, and he knows he can't get you with a certain tactic, he will move on and maybe try a different approach later. But, he has to obey in the name of Jesus, you just have to show him who's boss.
 
BTW, you can still do "youth ministry" even if it isn't official church organized youth ministry. Be a good role model, advocate, big brother so to speak to kids in organized sports or after school programs. Think outside the box. Don't just look at the position of youth minister in your church. You can also check out a phenominal youth ministry called Outreach America. I know the founder, Gary Newell. His youth ministry is one of the most effective at winning soals for the Lord. He has also founded the Veritas Sports Academy in Greensboro, NC to give youth a place to excell at academics and sports, with the mission to send to athletes that are soldiers for the Lord into top D1 colleges and professional sports. Gary Newell is an unbelievable mentor and leader when it comes to empowering youth and adults for every aspect in life.

That is absolute bullcrap. First year noob you wont make more then 500 take home a week unless you have a friend that owns his own trucks and likes you. Of that you gonna need to budget about 35 a day on stuffs (food etc). That said after banging out that first year suffering you an make a decent living.
 
No it isn't BS Dave,my first year i made 45k take home with this company. Do you even drive???? If not,why are you even talking???and don't be so quick to point out a flaw in someone else's post otherwise you will be the one looking like an ass!!
 
Oh yeah BTW Dave,that might be the case if your working for some sorry-ass OTR outfit that only pays you .25 cpm,if you are in that scenario that is your problem.
 
Honestly If you have already sold pretty much all superfluous things I'd agree with B and I'd suggest you to go and talk with your bank about bankruptcy. The worst thing that can happen is that you go out with more information. And you realize you are worthy as a person no matter how other judge you.

Honestly I'm 22 too and here's how I see it: Do abandon your hard effort to get money and job. However you can do both that and bankruptcy. Try investing your hark work to your future, not your past.

You really don't need that much the credit system, it's that system that ****ed up America. After bankruptcy make the student loan a priority and start saving money. Let be those saving the pride you have in building your life. Be your own creditor if possible: If you get some money from those saving, pay back interest to yourself at the market price. If you do that in maybe two years from now you may have enough saving for rolling out with life and not even thinking about the fact you are out of the credit system.

If you get in right now.. you may be have enough money to get out just at time for your next big loan : the house. If you have saved for 7-10 years you may even have a very good folder because you can advance a big portion of the house cost at the moment of the loan. If you can use yourself to go dept free route then you'll be better than 98% of America even if there was a bankruptcy in the young day.

After the economic crisis a lot of honest worker will have a bad folder I'm pretty sure the pressure can only go down. Also be sure to get advantage of the soon to be public health care, you wont have 50000$ debt in 3 seconds if hit by a car. Really you do not have to see bankruptcy as the fail of your efforts.
