True. Thiago is 5'9", correct? I believe Georges is closer to 5'11". If GSP added 6-7lbs lean mass between now and UFC 94, he will be pretty large. I am really interested to see how the strength advantage, or lack thereof, will play out between these two. Most of what I have read from fighters that have trained with both, though, points to GSP being freakishly strong, and probably able to overpower Thiago.

Did you see that GSP brought a few Thai Boxers from France in preparation? (Or went there, ICR.) It will be interesting to see how his MT defense/offense matches up with Thiago's, if he was learning the Dutch or French-style MT.

GSP trains more diversely than any other fighter out there. The Brazilian style of Muay Thai is much different than other countries forms. They tend to be more aggressive (e.g. Wand, Shogun), but leave lots of openings for western-style Boxers.

A couple of videos. Based on Greg Jackson's comments about pushing Thiago into his "safety zone", and GSP's comments about "fighting him how nobody else has", I get the impression Georges is going to kickbox/MT Thiago in the first to disrupt his range, and then use heavy clinch work.

In the first video, Thiago's stance and body language is not that confident. The way he looks at GSP reminds me of GSP/Hughes I. Thiago even called it a "shitle tot", ha.

Apparently this is who GSP trained his MT with, "Jean-Charles Skarbowski". I know nothing of him, but apparently he fought in Thailand for a decade, competing in S-1 championships. RD or Jas would know more, probably.

He's fought Buakaw (an amazing Thai boxer/K-1 champion) to a tough decision loss, but that's about all I've found. Not a huge guy, as is the case with all Thai boxers who compete in Thailand, but if he can hang with Buakaw, then he's got some mad school.

I like this thread. we got some guys in GSP's corner and some guys in Alves' corner. There is some good ol fashion smack talkin goin down and even some negs. I like it.

I think you guys should make a wager and pay up over paypal.

I've already posed a $25 bet, even earlier in this thread I think. I won $25 off the Stanley Cup from some tool named Tribaltek, who went AWOL shortly thereafter. If wants it, I will take a bet on GSP.

Sweet Vid!
BRING BACK THE CONTENDER MUAY THAI!!!!!! :(

If you go to UFC.com and check out the press conference with GSP/Alves at the very end they stand shoulder to shoulder and just from the look of it, the whole size difference looks a little like bullsh!t to me. Granted the suit will make anyone look a little bigger but I don't see any drastic size difference between the two of them.

I saw that as well. As I said earlier, GSP put on several pounds of lean mass, which are going to be noticeable given his BF% and frame.

truely seems like the difference is not even worth bringing up. Mir should have grabbed the mic at the conference and said you want size difference lets swap opponents.

Even if the size difference prior to GSP putting on that mass was present, I doubt it would have been too consequential.

it looks like Dana got on some juice. (serious)

PS: all the masterdebaters that believe alves is going to overpower GSP have to seriously be questioning themselves now.

No kidding. GSP's primary training partner for wrestling, a Canadian Olympic team member, wrestles at 84 kilos, which means his walking weight is ~200lbs. Anybody that thought Alves had a chance to muscle-out GSP was sipping the UFC's kool-aid.

I was watching ESPN and it cracke dme up listening tothem hype the event. Basically one of the anchors said he saw GSP fight before and he has had nightmares ever since

I dont think anyone could have truly believed Alves will be able to out wrestle GSP, however, the longer the fight is on its feet, the better the shot Alves has. Aleves will come in tonight in the mid to high 180's, probably a lbs or 2 above GSP, nothing too big IMO. With that said, GSP by GnP rd 4

What makes Thiago dangerous is that he can end the fight at any time, and does not need to dominating and/or controlling to win the fight; unfortunately for George, he does not have that same capacity. This being said, two things work against Thiago there: a) George has only been put on his back once in his entire career, against Serra, and; b) he has never lost a fight that went past the first round. I would say Thiago's chances are 50/50 in the first round, and after that drop to about 30% in the second, and 10% thereafter. If it makes it to the third round, it means that GSP has nullified Alves' attacks, and probably had him on his back pounding him.

The other thing is this: while GSP has never faced a striker like Alves, Alves has never faced a striker like GSP. Going through Alves' opponents and tape, there isn't a single fighter who was quick enough to constantly have a jab in his face, disrupting his rhythm; as well, Thiago's favorite weapons - left low kick, left hook, right knee - all leave him susceptible to shots GSP loves to throw: right superman punch, and a stiff left jab. I actually look for GSP to out kickbox Thiago in the first round to frustrate him ala BJ, and then take him down after that.

I agree with your thoughts on Alves, he will have a punchers chance throughout the fight, no matter how long it goes. I think GSP needs to be wary in Rd1, and once he does survive an initial onslaught (I see Alves being very aggressive after finding his range) I think GSP will utilize his wrestling very well, and really start to beat Alves down, starting halfway through rd2.

I also have to say, I am hoping to see Henderson beat the crap out of Bisiping. Keep in mind I typical root for the Brits as I am British (father born and rasied) however, Bisping is such a whiny little sh!t, that I truly hope Henderson mauls him

Idk man, i thought thiago looked thicker than gsp, i mean his chest is def about 4x the size, haha. Im glad he made weight tho, i was a lil worried.

He is thicker, but also because he is a full 2" shorter. In terms of overall size, GSP will be bigger tonight, IMO. And yes: GSP has a bird chest, ha.

I used to have a bird chest, i hated that ****. This is going to be the fight of the night imo

As did I, actually, ha. I agree though HM: whichever way it goes, this is going to be a phenomenal fight. IMO, Mir/Lesnar will seem sort of anti-climatic. You have the best P4P fighter in the world against his most dangerous opponent - I mean, come on.

For sure, flyers and I are going to our buddies for a ufc100 party tonight, he has a theater room with 15ft projection, should be tight as ****

Nothing wrong with that at all. I only have a 40" myself, but the picture is still A+. I may have to get a bottle of Jag., tonight, ha.

SPOILER: (Had to put it in both threads, so Flyer would see!)

With all due respect, I can't believe some of you thought Alves had an honest shot. GSP handled him thoroughly on the feet, with Alves never landing a shot of significance, and GSP taking him down at will. After the fight Alves' face looked like a meat-grinder hit it, with GSP not having a mark. I am going to retire to my gloating, and become an MMA analyst. :D

I hate to brag as well, I picked all the main card fights, with no $ to show for it

Joe Rogan is such a f^g. Ok maybe I was pulling for akiyama but belcher was not robbed. It was close. I thought aki had more take downs or punches....its hard to recall anything after the Mir fight, but something looked more in Aki's favor.

Anyone think Dan's gonna get flack for admitting to striking Bisp after he was well into R.E.M.?

I just watched a post-fight interview, and GSP just said, "I don't consider myself a good wrestler, as a matter of fact". I am nervous to see his skills when he becomes one.

I was a lil disappointed. I wanted to see thiago put up a better fight than that. gsp dominated, thiago had an advantageous position for about 20 seconds and that was it. The heavyweight fight went as I had imagined it would. Mirs face has to be hurting today

after the first 2 rounds he jsut looked scared as hell to get back in there with gsp. not scared as he was gonig to get hurt scared as in didnt know what to do because he knew a takedown and a light ground and pound was coming his way. 5th round came out a lil more mad but soon got tired and didnt do so well.

the mir lesner fight was boring but brock did what he wanted to do but was a ****.

the hendo fight was so funny! that was so sick! i dont think he will get anything for it look at rampage jackson against wandy silva.

I know but damn he straight said I gave him a little extra to keep his mouth shut. COLD BLOODED HAHAHA.
I tell you what though Alves has got ridiculous cardio! Take down after take down after take down and comes out each round fresh even the 5th. He's got my respect.

Yeah I had no idea how huge... am I thinking of the right match up, like 4+ inches??

Dan Henderson: "It felt good though.."
LOL
