What's going on?
Jim here to share some thoughts and ask a few questions:
Ok I'm a 28 yr old male, I'm 6'3, and I weigh about 225. I'm not sure what my body fat percentage is but I've got pretty good upper body strength and a bit of a gut. I love lifting and have been doing so on and off for around 8 years now. My primary goal is to burn off the fat on my belly, and get as many solid, lean muscle gains as possible.
In the past I drank protein shakes and along with a little creatine here and there, that was my supplement stack. Recently I have been doing more research on bodybuilding and so naturally I have begun taking pre workout supps in addition to my protein, creatine, and basic multis and amino acids. Oh yea I take fish oil and flaxseed as well. I'm working on designing a good customized diet, but for the most part I eat as clean as I possibly can, and this info is just to give everybody a reference point.
The issue for me is my pre workout supp. I am sensitive to caffeine, but at the same time I have gotten myself to the point where (like so many of us), I basically need it to function. So here is a list of the products I've tried and my experience with them:
FRS Healthy Energy: Slight jolt of energy but didn't last very long and gave me a headache.
Gaspari Nutrition's SuperPump 250: Gave me a short burst of energy, but also felt like I drank 20 cups of coffee because it had a laxative effect. Overall good pumps in the gym, but made me sweat like crazy, and my heart felt like it was going to beat out of my chest. One other positive thing about it is that it felt like it had a thermogenic effect, in other words I felt like it was helping me burn fat. Has anyone that has tried this felt like it kills braincells?
Universal Nutrition's Animal Pump: Wow..this product is pretty awesome. I tried it before a dumbell home workout and the energy lasted a long time. Not only that, post workout my muscles felt hard and lean. I even took this product on off days before I would have to go into work for a 12 hour shift and my mornings were awesome! I like to write music and Animal Pump helped me concentrate on writing lyrics! In case you're wondering, I'm not a Universal rep but I must say I had nothing but good experience with this product except for the fact that it's a lot of pills to take.
So the question is, if I like Animal Pump so much, why don't I just choose that as my pre workout supp? Well I'm sure many can relate to the fact that saving money is key these days and I've got a tub of SuperPump that I'm not just going to throw in the trash. But maybe I should? I do like the burst of energy in the gym and if I take a little less maybe the effect won't be quite as strong. I also like the fat burning effect of Super Pump. I also have three cans of Animal Pump that I'm dying to use. So do I stop the Super Pump and go straight to the Animal, or finish the SuperPump and then start using the Animal Pump? Decisions, decisions...
