BIGGER, FASTER, STRONGER: Snag's Recipe for a [NATURAL] Recomp, Competition Style!

Snags im impressed, and am now feeling rather inadequate...my arms look like spaghetti...

Hahaaa, dude you kill me. You've got one of the best physiques on this forum bro, 6'2" at 210, 5% bf.. c'mon. I've learned a few things from you already, and I've only seen one of your threads. I accept this as a huge compliment! :box:

Hey Steve, will you be posting your diet as well as your training routine in this log ?? I might have missed it if someone else asked the same question.

Training coming up here shortly, diet I'll list macros and some examples of foods/meals, like above.

Subbed.

You know I'm here to watch this big brother!

Well if it ain't my lil' bro! I just saw you earlier man.. did I inspire you to hop on the ol' AM-scene or what?? Yes, you really need to post a pic of yourself, get yourself an avi too man..

You've inspired me to use your EAA + Leucine post workout instead of jumping right into the whey isolate and carbs. Thanks for the insight!

hey what are the benefits to your workout Snag?

I think the 3 on/1 off set-up is the most optimal for maximum growth potential as well as full (enough) recovery to occur; every bodypart is being hit equally 2x weekly; and by alternating a heavier/lighter format and manipulating rest periods, different muscle fibers are being worked as well. It's also very easy to increase one of a couple different parameters to keep progress going as well; as by trimming rest severely towards the end of this program along with dietary manipulations we'll bring out some striations and good shit like that when it's all said & done.

Day #1 Chest/Shoulders/Abs

Bench Press:
135x15
155x10
205xmax reps (18-30 reps) {24}
275xmax reps (10-15 reps) {9}
295xmax reps (3-5 reps) {4}
225xmax reps (15-25 reps) {14}
185xmax reps (whatever ya got) {15}

Incline:
135x10
185x8
205x12 (3 sets)

Incline Flyes:
3 setsx15-18 reps

Seated Front Press:
4 sets 8-12 reps {135x12}

Behind Neck Press:
4x20/16/12/8 (all as heavy as you can go)
{95/115/135/155}

Standing Laterals:
4x20/15/12/12

ABS:
200 reps total

Notes: I'm not used to doing such volume; as a rule, the highest volume work I do is in competition training mode. It's also the most intense & focused mentally that I get too, hence breaking this style of training out. My endurance wasn't all that impressive; that 205 for 24 reps took a lot out of me early on, and by the time I got thru front shoulder presses, I was freaking toast. Hella pump thruout.. gotta admit that I skipped abs today tho, I'll make 'em up tomorrow I promise.

I usually don't post my weights (for a variety of reasons), but I felt it was relevant to the nature of the thread, and now we have something for a baseline for future comparisons.

nice snag! I just introduced DB flyes in and am liking them thus far. What does your elbow flex look like? Dead straight or slightly bent?

I only do slight-bend in elbows myself, and prefer heavy weight such that I feel each and every rep. Straight arm with regular DB flyes seem to put too much tension on my shoulder joint .. ?? .. However, when I experiment with the old-school palms facing forwards DB flyes, I drop the weight, and use straight arm. And your body will love the surprise of this new 'feel' for the Dumbbell Flyes.

I have been using straight arm and can only get up to 40Lbs before it starts to put a problem on my deltoids. I will have to try a slight bend.

Check my 'edited' post above .. The tension in my deltoids is the primary reason for not doing them with straight-arms, but rather with a slight bend that remains the same throughout the motion.

Yep.. at the end, you want to be like you're hugging a tree. Keeping that same motion all the way thru. That's how I do mine anyway. Like Viking says, straight-arm will stress the delts.

Yeah I tried to bump up above 40Lbs today and it was putting a big pain and strain on my delts.

The 'hugging a tree' quote is something that stuck with me from the first time I opened up Arnold's Encyclopedia of Bodybuilding. Arnold will remain a life-long inspiration, imho.

Haha! Exactly where I got the phrase from, many years ago. He explained the movement so well. Sure dude, Ah-nold will always be an icon in this sport! Even if he is a horrible Gov'nah..

Yes, an icon of bodybulding forever .. and he'll always be the one and only Terminator .. but I don't think he'll be recognized as a phenomenal actor in his lifetime; my brother and I caught Kindergarten Cop on Starz the other night, and I haven't seen that one since I was a kid .. needless to say, we laughed our asses off, but not cus it's a comedy, but because Ah-nold can't be taken seriously in any comedy flick, ever .. And Ah-nold being 'romantic' and flirtatious with the ladies ?! .. priceless! hahaha, I choked on my own breath while watching it.

.. Oh, and the bud only helped ! :thumbsup:

For sure, some of his stuff was comedic tho - I just don't know if that was the intent of the part tho, nah what I mean?..
Ahahaa.. yes I hope everyone had their share of Christmas greenage..

My wad would have been shot on that 205x24. And you still have the numbers you put up after that...nice strength and endurance Snag. I will be trying the EAA & Leucine mix as well. Are they both from MNT?

Subbed. Your wheels look great.

Huh? where?

As for the hugging a tree i found that at the top of a flye motion to bring your elbows in close instead of your hand at the finish really pulled my lower chest in the movement.

I do a swooping start low on the pec, with the same "tree hug" arm bend, finish at the mipple level. Bringing elbows in as close as i could accomodate, really weakened me but incorporated my lower chest in a way im not accustomed too.

Ah, that LeuceMine product that MNT puts out is quality stuff for sure, but no I went with the GNC version of straight leucine (MNT's is still a BCAA mix with added glutamine, and I wanted to isolate levels of the leucine). Nitro E8 tho is the best EAA complex in existence imo, price be damned. You can still find this at a @$35 online if you're diligent. And because price does become an issue at some point, this is another reason I went with GNC's Leucine Activator - stuff was BOGOF, and with my 'discount' there I got 2 180-ct. bottles for $24.

Pre pics are in post #3.

As a rule, I work out earlier in the morning, about an hour & 45 minutes or so following breakfast. Breakfast today was 1 cup oats, 1 scoop MonsterMilk, 1 scoop ProNOS (all in shaker w/ water), and 1 large grapefruit. Dietary-wise, the large quantities of protein powders I'll be utilizing is a new twist for me; I've usually in the past tried to stick to real food sources, but I figured I'd run with these quality powders I feel I have and maintain a more liquid diet, see how this works. Besides, oats & protein powder in a shaker is a hella convenient & quick meal to make, and I'm on the go a lot, so I'll be leaning on this combo quite a bit for awhile..

Day #2 Legs

Barbell Squats:
135x20
185x15
225xmax reps (15-30) {16}
255xmax reps (10-25) {11}
225xmax reps (15-25) {13}

Dumbbell Lunges:
3x12 (almost fell over doing these, haha)

Leg Curl:
5x12-15

Leg Extension:
3x15

Calf Raises:
Donkeys ss w/ Standing Raises 5x20 each

Notes: Holy puking painful pumps Batman! WOW. I knew the legs were gonna be strugglesome today when I warmed up and then ran that first set of 20. I expected strength to be lagging here, but not on this level. Again, nowhere to go but up..

EDIT: WTF??? How did I mess up the the training day # on only the 2nd day (originally had this as Day #3)?? :think:
Musta been too lightheaded to think straight when I typed it..anyway, fixed.

Ahaa, D-Fly! That's what I'm talking about! Love your nuggets you bring to the threads, glad you're here! (Plus, I needed to have some feminine input to balance out all the testosterone that's sure to fly around up in here, haha.. ;))

:welcome:

Thanks Snag, however, I'm not sure if I'm capable of balancing out all the testosterone, 'cause Prime&PWFULL are making me kind of like Invalid Link Removed :lol:

No problem. I would think 4-6 weeks is the maximum AUC (area under curve) for any supplement to exert peak effects; AP, P-Slin and the entire USP Labs being included. I say peak as the effects may continue for sometime after, and some may have been present prior to this 4-6 week period, but they most likely were not of a substantial nature.

Invalid Link Removed, true even USPLabs doesn't do wonders forever :) I went off AP for 4 weeks to restore sensitivity. I've noticed I wasn't going hypo anymore. All is good now :thumbsup:

You've inspired me to use your EAA + Leucine post workout instead of jumping right into the whey isolate and carbs. Thanks for the insight!

You and me both !

Looking great Snag, agree with Timber, that is some SERIOUS trap&shoulder MASS-growth you got going. In fact I had to go back and re-read your log to pick on some more of your wisdom :D

Looking great, Snag! It really looks like you've added some mass over the last couple of months.

I felt small and discouraged looking at those photos, but then I realized you have sixteen years on me. :D

Lookin' totally swole in those latest pics snag!! It appears you have rebounded from your bout of sickness.

I, on the other hand, am feeling under the weather this morning. Temperature changes and the like, no doubt. Feels like a stomach virus. But I'm determined to march on through it and work out here in a few. I've got a sneaky suspicion that I may see my oatmeal again!! :lol:

Okay. This part of the post is 15 minutes later. And I was right. I saw my oatmeal and orange again!! Damn!!

I'm going to wait about 15 minutes and eat me a banana. Then I'll drink my 3 scoop serving of JACKED and 5 extra grams of Beta-Alanine! I'm going to war....regardless!!!

Swolencey, looking lean and mean, my friend.
I have been using BCAA/EAA's and Na-Rala after my workouts for alomost a year now. I also use it over a whey drink before bed. I only wish that I had been doing so this entire time.

Anyway, keep the updates coming! :D

Thanks Snag, however, I'm not sure if I'm capable of balancing out all the testosterone, 'cause Prime&PWFULL are making me kind of like Invalid Link Removed :lol:

Hahaha, yeah I guess your estrogen ratio might be a little skewed right now huh?

Keep on dino'ing out D! :D

Drop by my thread real quick and you'll see what changed my mind to go ahead and work out anyway.

I refuse to accept defeat. I mean it!! :hammer::twisted:

Jeff may be weak, but the Thundergod is mighty yet!! :bb3:

We live & learn bro. Keeps life interesting. There are many things I've done that I kick myself for now that I look back..

Good add on the pre-bed supplementation as well. When I cut cals/carbs back along the way, I'll add BCAA's to waking/bedtime timeframes. Great for slimming purposes, also anti-catabolic of course..

Thanx IC. Yeah, I'm an ancient, dusty-ass old man.. I've earned a bit of mature muscle along the way, haha.

You got nothing to feel small & discouraged about, you're looking great. You've come a long way and continue to fine tune your physique -- kudos to you bro.

First food pic of the thread.. and one most you guys have already seen. This is a very common meal for me tho; if I have use of my cooking facilities, I'll eat this meal once a day:
8 egg whiltes
2 whole eggs
2 peices Ezekiel 4:9 flourless bread (toasted crisp, plain)
This meal always follows a hi-carb meal in the daily format (for example, today it followed my MRI Quick Gainer shake, 4 scoops worth, which was 690 cals, 93g of carbs), usually 2 hours following aforementioned meal.

I usually try to have my higher-cal/carb days on leg days, but I'm breaking with that today and dropping both levels (@3000 cals, 300g carbs). I've filled back up rather well, but I want to be proactive and make sure I keep an eye on the overall goal of cutting. Weight upon waking was 193.

Same meal for me but, I slab Laura Scudders PB on the bread. I am going to start putting the eggs/bread(no PB) as my post w/o meal. The eggs digest so fast for me. I am usually starving half an hour after eating them.

Ezekiel bread is the best stuff in the world!

People always say the price is too high, but first of all, the price of bread has gone way up anyways (regular loaf is about $3), and secondly, since you have to freeze Ezekiel bread, you don't risk losing money by it going stale.

Yeah, I got some natty PB and I'll bust out that with some sugar-free blueberry or strawberry preserves. I've also got a natty PB & honey mix I use alternatively. This makes for a great meal for the morning time, somewhere close to training (preferably breakfast for me). I utilize the cinnamon raisin Ezekiel bread as well, specifically for post workout meal time..

And as for eggs being non-filling, yes this can leave you feeling a bit unfulfilled sometimes, but that's why I typically surround it by meals 2-2.5 hrs. apart on both sides.

Abs-olutely.. plus you can't began to put a value on the clean carb source that it is, being flourless and all.. if anybody needs any more convincing, there's like a million pieces in each loaf too, cuz they're thin slices, thing lasts forever! It's really a hella value all things considered.

That is my mid-morning meal about 2 hours pre w/o.

I think it's 20 slices per loaf, correct? I eat two slices per day, so that's 10 days. $5.70/loaf = $0.57 cents per day. I think most people could handle that. If not, you've got bigger problems than not being able to eat flourless bread.

Hmm, you're right, 20 pieces per loaf. Seems like more than that.. guess it lasts longer when you only eat 1 slice at some meals.

And my loaves cost $4.79! :p Guess I'm getting a better deal than I thought even..

Mmmm.. just busted out a mug of green tea. I drink a lot of this during cutting season, but this is the first I've had for awhile. Was just taking inventory to see how much I had on hand, and a it just sounded good. When hardcore cutting time rolls around, I'll have 3 cups of this daily..
Got a few tricks up my sleeve as we go -- can't show 'em all up front tho! You guys will lose interest.. you'll just have to hang around I guess.
