Took my niece (16ish) to a college Hockey game and the whole time she wasted texting ! I asked her to stop and it was like there is an addiction because she actually seemed to have withdrawl symptoms any similar experiences comments ?

Yep i know people like that. It drives me nuts, its quite rude actually. What better way to say Hey I can't stand the time I'm with you so I'll redeem it texting the ones I'd rather be with.

My little brother (14) does this constantly and I don't really appreciate it when we get to spend time together -- kinda puts me out

I also have a niece that is constantly texting. I think the problem is the fact that teenagers now have access to technology only adults used not long ago. This is a very effective way to ruin or thwarp a teenager's interpersonal social skills. I blame my sister for giving her the phone in the first place without a sense of reward, much less managing usage... anyway, yeah.

"thwarp a teenager's interpersonal social skills"
Exactly !
However, what I witnessed was an actuall temper tantrum / fit by a teenager because I tried to remove the phone. The effects of removing the phone i'm saying were similar to that of a patient going through a detox ! nervous figiting, nail biting, quivering, irritability, low attention, to the point where it had ruined our fun evening out together, bummer:(

Last time me and my best friend hung out the douchebag texted his girlfriend the entire night. We hang out maybe once or twice every 3 months since hes gotten whipped. The texting pissed me off big time... what pissed me off even more was the fact that he took about 5 calls in a 4 hour period from his girlfriend. Its sad to say but i no longer want to waste my time hanging out with him because all he ever does it text his girlfriend.

I only text when I am around people that I feel that if I were on the phone would interrupt what is going on.

Both my sister and sister-in-law are both phone-a-holics. Drives me nuts when we're watching a movie or doing anything... they are constantly button mashing on their ever-shrinking cell phones. Oh, man, and watch out if they can't find or don't have access to their phones... you would think they were searchin' for some tar. Might miss that next hot text. :|

i used to text alot too. not much anymore though. its too distracting, and you can get 100x more done in a 5 min conversation than texting for an hour

It truly is an addiction. I cannot stand to be around people that cannot keep their hands from looking at their phone every 5 minutes. There was a teenager in the gym the other day that would do a set and then get his phone out and start texting. I wanted to drop an 80 lb dumbell on his phone.

I'll it admit it can get quite addicting!! I stopped completely about 7 moths and have yet to get my new blackberry in fear I might beginning acting as the people im constantly calling idiots for texting... Only thing I hate about it as you said was the fact that you ca get much more done in a phone call often times idiots will respond with one worded messages! You therefore have to ask a specific follow up question which is even more time consumption wasted on mashing the keypad....

Exactly. The only thing I got from texting was lower productivity and a dirty keypad.

I try to stick with simplistic phones in hopes that I won't be distracted by all that the PDA's offer. Texting, internet, email, etc.

It's just one more thing to keep you from "doin work"

Cell phones in the gym are clearly a distraction ! Try not to loose focus, on the otherhand getting upset about it might push you for one more rep. Perhaps it should be like going to the movies, turn them off or leave um in a locker. I'm sure in case of an emergency the person could call the gym directly and they could page/reach you to relay an important message.

Texting while driving is a very serious issue as well. Your damn eyes and attention come off the road for at least 7-10 seconds at a time ...

Is there anyone out there that doesnt carry a cellphone. There was a period last year when my sim card got corrupted and i didnt have a cellphone for 2 months. Im serious when i say it was one of the most stress free peaceful moments of my life. I am honestly considering getting rid of my cellphone when my contract expires this May.

I think texting is a step backward for personal interaction. People are misusing the technology, IMO. It should be for 'e-mail' type messages... stuff that may be replied to at a later time. I don't think it was intended to have extended conversations (like IM'ing).

It follows suit w/ the inherent problems of 'Internet communities' (like message boards, gaming, etc.). In ways, it opens up new possibilities for communication and human interaction. But, contrastingly, it closes doors in other ways, specifically limiting face-to-face human contact - this ultimately leading to social retardation.

eh i can see both sides of the argument... but it saves me a lot of time

i only text when i need to get something across, especially at work or someplace where an actual phone call can be more distracting to myself or others around me... usually its just one or 2 a day to my girl

i just got a samsung blackjack.. and while i thought i never 'needed' a fully functional windows platform in my pocket, it has saved me so much sanity through the organizational tools that phone has

texting isnt the bad guy here.. its the people who over-use it while around others

Don't hate the game, hate the player?

Just with everything else, there are the fools who misuse and abuse. I am guilty, though not w/ texting.

I have friends (around my age) that pretty much only answer TXT's from me. For whatever reason.

Used to irritate me - but I let it go. (Bigger stuff like a parent dieing apparently has that effect.)

I type sorta quickly - but generally use regular words, not txt crap. So - it's not really that bad for me (and only a few friends anyway).

Some friends I call and/or text - depending on if it's a stupid message (then I text).

I use it mostly for passing business-related comments while on the go.

I also send myself a lot of text messages, when I get ideas I want to remember.

I usually only text during class, so I can stay awake. I do find myself texting a hell of a lot more than I used to for whatever reason.

Only when I'm walking to the cage. Seriously, though, I usually spend half an hour afterwards texting people.
