Yes I am natural, 5'10".
During 2002-2003 (Summer), I trained MAX-OT style (4-6 rep sets, going ot failure every set).
I was making progress, but I always felt burned out and would need to take a week off every 8-10 weeks. While preparing for my comps in 2003, I did high intensity 16 minute sessions on the Elliptical (each time trying to beat my previous distance) and HIIT Sprints. I dieted for 23 weeks for my first contest (I believe I was aroud 5% bf) then another 3 weeks (after some mexican food, pizza, and a buffet) for the next contest at which I measured 3.9% bodyfat. I won the Teen division and Men's Middleweight at both shows.
Since about September of 2003, I've been training each muscle group two times a week without taking sets to failure (stopping a rep shy of failure). Since making the switch, I have been making great progress and I never feel burned out and haven't felt the need to take a week off since.
My Training:
Mon: Upper Body
Tues: Lower Body
Wed: Rest
Thurs: Upper Body
Fri: Lower Body
Sat and Sun: Rest
*Sometimes I do arms on lower body day
I am currently doing (due to my school schedule):
Mon: Upper Body
Tues: Rest
Wed: Lower Body
Thurs: Rest
Fri: Upper Body
Sat: Lower Body
Sun: Rest
I lift in the 3-5 and 6-10 rep ranges. I usually integrate both reps ranges in my workouts, but right now I am doing all 3-5 rep sets on Mon and Wed and 6-10 reps on Fri and Sat.
I hit a new PR on squat today of 485 X 3. I've never been a good bencher, but have repped with 315 before. My PR in deadlift is 585 X 1 (no straps or chalk, just under/over grip)
My bulking diet is:
Workout Days
Protein: 350 grams
Carbs: 500 grams
Fat: 80 grams
On non-workout days, I drop the carbs to 200-300.
Ideally, I should drop my carbs to 400 grams on workout days and 200 on non-workout days, but I like to eat.
At my last comp, NPC Michigan Natural, I placed 7th out of 17 in the Men's Lightheavy weight. I was the youngest and lightest (180 lbs) of the group. So I've been hitting it hard trying to making improvements. I am taking this year off of competing.
Staying lean while bulking: Clean calories + Fish Oil + Avant Labs SesaThin. SesaThin works very well at fat gain prevention.
Cutting: I use an Ultimate Diet 2.0 approach.
