In a study one by Hoffman et al 2009, they investigated what effects a protein blend would have on recovery in strength/power athletes.
Fifteen male strength/power athletes were randomized into an experimental group or a placebo group. The experimental group received a protein and BCAA blend 10 min prior to and 15 min following the workout. The protein blend was made up of hydrolyzed collagen protein isolate, whey protein isolate, casein protein isolate, plus 250 mg in a proprietary protein consisting of a total of 42g protein.
Over the course of 4 days the subjects performed various exercises and strength, performance and soreness was measured. On the first day they were tested for their 1-RM on the squat, deadlift and barbell lunge exercises. On the second day the subjects returned and received either the placebo or the protein blend and then performed 4 sets of the same exercises that were done on day one @ 80% of 1-RM (established from day 1) with 90-s rest interval between each set. They were instructed to perform no more then 10 reps on each set. 15 mins after the workout the subjects received either the placebo or the protein blend. The subject then reported back 24 and 48 hours later (day 3 & 4) and performed 4 sets of the squat exercise, using the same
loading pattern and rest interval
Below is the results on powers & reps performed
Invalid Link Removed
The researchers concluded that a protein blend taken immediately before and after a exercise session can enhance performance recovery in subsequent days of exercise.
