VARICOCELE...can it effect testosterone?

hey everyone. I just had the varicocele surgery today for my grade 3 varicocele. I was asleep the whole operation. After i was done, i did throw up a bit. Right now i have blood stains around my area. I also have a rectangular tape right above my penis area where i assume thats where they cut.

When am i suppose to take off the tape? Am i allowed to shower because i have blood stains that are drying out between my legs. It was on the left side the varicocele. I did not get a chance to talk to the surgeon afterwards b/c he left and i had to go home fast b/c i threw up and wanted to go home.

The doctors at beth israel hospital in NYC told me to call my urologist who did the surgery on me to schedule an appointment to see him. I also have painkillers i had to buy called Hydrocodone/Apap for the pain i have.

You're not going to be able to shower for a few days. I think 48-72 hours later. There should be transparent Tegaderm dressing(s) over the incision(s) & under that there are Steri-strips. The steri-strips will curl up & fall off on their own in 7-10 days, apparently (mine still haven't- it's day 6 for me). The first time I showered, I reapplied Tegaderm film over the steri-strips to keep them dry.

I would definitely try to get in touch with your dr. & ask him about post-op procedure.

One thing I have to stress though, is TO USE ICE. You want to keep the swelling down.
 
they called me early in the morning today. They told me i can do shower but not a bath. I will see my urologist in 2 weeks. There is only one strip i have over my incision. It does not look like it will off unless i rip it off which is what the urologist/surgeon will do for me in 2 weeks. Thats what the person on the phone told me at the hospital that i had my surgery done yesterday.


Is this normal right now that i cannot walk straight. The pain is in my left side and i cannot walk straight because of the pain. However, when i sit on a chair the pain is not that bad. I cannot really walk straight at all right now. Is this normal? I am hunching back my whole body now because of it.
 
Do you know how many days i will be hobbling around for? It was on Tuesday that i had surgery. The painkiller they give me does not seem to help at all.

I feel the most comfortable sitting on a chair while using the computer. I dont feel much pain at all. When standing up it hurts. When lying on the bed, i still have pain. What should be the position i should have these next few days?
 
batman i am pretty bruised around the area as well. Are you allowed to shower or take a bath? I had surgery on Tuesday and it is already Friday. I did do a quick shower on Tuesday but did not shower/bath Wednesday nor Friday.
 
Showers, yes. Baths, no. You don't want to soak the steri-strips. Put band-aids over them or something before you get in the shower.

Difficult to say, only because my sleep schedule has been so ****ed this week. The first couple of days, everything seemed great, back to normal. But I feel like things have leveled off now. I masturbated (very gently) on day 3 or 4, and I feel like that might have been a bad idea..

The past 2 days I have also been extremely depressed- lowest I have felt in a long time. I definitely think there is a hormone connection.

so are you able to get horny now? or wasn't that really an issue in the first place?


try not to jack off for at least a couple of weeks, so that your sexual powers can return optimally.

The first couple of days were great, but now not so much. I don't feel fully healed though.

Hopefully I didn't screw everything up. :scared1:
 
It's been just over 6 weeks since I had my surgery. I feel 100% now. After my surgery I walked kind of bent over aswell because of the soreness. I also felt the best sitting or laying down with my back propped up a little. It shouldn't matter how you're sitting I don't think, just what ever is the most comfortable for you.

I iced the area constantly so I had very little swelling. The only area I had swelling was on my upper inner thigh. No steri-strips were put on me because I had stiches put under the skin and then they closed it at the top with this clear glue that started coming off about 2 weeks postsurgery.

Try not to masturbate for a week or so just to be on the cautious side, but if you feel well enough to I don't see why not.

If you guys have any more questions just post them and I'll answer them for you since I just went through everything you did.
 
guys how do you put an icepack on the bruise? I took some ice cubes and put it in a bag. Am i suppose to put the bag with the ice directly on my bruise which is pretty area the area where i had surgery on or am i suppose to just put it over a towel or over my shorts for it to me like a layer? I never done this before.

Am doing it right now at the moment and not sure if i am icing it correctly or not.

How is your libido now? Erection quality? Any recurrence of symptoms, such as the scrotum feeling tight/balls riding too high?

There doesn't seem to be much of a consensus on this. I've heard anywhere from 48 hours to 6 weeks.. Reading things like this make me nervous though:

Over your shorts is probably best. You don't want to freeze your skin.
 
Do you guys know how long it will take for the bruise to go away? I had surgery Tuesday and I think the bruise came on Thursday
 
For icing i was given an ice bag from the surgery center. It had a plastic liner with the typical hospital fabric outer. So I'd say wrap the plastic bag in a light towel so you don't get your skin too cold.

I had a yellowish bruise that lasted for probably two weeks but it wasn't very noticeable.

I think I waited about a week and a half before masturbating. The doctor never said anything about how long I shouldn't do it.

did you guys have sexual problems before your surgery? like lack of libido(sexual drive) and lack of morning wood? how is it now after your surgery?

Yes, I had those problems. They initially improved dramatically, but have since returned. I can only hope this isn't because I masturbated "too soon" after surgery.

I will report back after my follow-up appt. with the urologist on Wednesday & then I will be going for blood work.

I dont know. It doesn't seem another week will help me at all. Can someone telll me the range of days it usually takes to recover from this where you can walk straight? I still have pain and those painkillers i take seem to not do anything for me.
 
I could walk well enough to go to school 4 days after surgery. I was still hobbling around though. The pain pills I got didn't really help me either so I stopped taking them the second day because they made me more sick than anything else.
 
Update: Dr. says I am healing well & I am "pretty much right where I should be" 2+ weeks after surgery. Hoping there are no complications..
 
Hi everyone great forum glad i found it.. basically i need some advice for my situation..

I’m 22 and have had a left sided (grade 2) vericocele since i can remember. Had it ultra-sounded twice (once when I was 17 and once last summer). Both ultrasounds revealed my testicles are the same size and the doctors told me to let it go.. I went to a more experienced urologist in my area twice last month (first met with his PA and then him). They told me the surgery is an option if i wish (he would do the conventional inguinal method) but told me to get a sperm analysis which i will be scheduling this week.

This vericocele has never caused me any pain but cosmetically its not the nicest thing to look at also I am worried about progressive damage over time. I addressed this with the urologist last month and hes says there is a higher chance of the vericocele increasing in size rather than my left nut becoming smaller.

Surgery is scaring me a bit for a couple reasons... Basically I’m worried about crippling my current lifestyle. I don’t have the greatest libido but i can get and maintain erections, also i am pretty active (i lift and run 3-4 times a week). I have heard stories (both here and on other sites) that post surgery can leave you in pain (even after recovery period) when engaged in sexual activity, exercising, or in general. Has anyone experienced this?

As far as my testosterone I called in to my urologist last week to request a blood test from the lab in addition to the sperm analysis. He declined (not sure of the reason I spoke with his secretary who called me back later.. He was meeting with a patient when I called in..). If I decide to check my t levels where do I get that done and what are the costs? I couldn’t guess what my levels are at. I have lifted a long time so im pretty built but I do lack facial and arm hair so idk… should I get this checked?

Obviously I don’t want to make myself worse of by deciding to go with the surgery.. I understand there are risks and this is an adult decision but I want to get as much input as I can before making a decision.

Hello I'm new here I know I have varicocele I have the dead worms feeling on my left side
my parents know but. There not very concerned
but I am my nada feel like there 100 degree all the time, they hang low and it's quite embarising for a 16 yr old the girls are a little shocked :/ there starting to hurt on occasion too

could someone give me the load down on surgery I know it's about 4 grand but what are the complacations? What could happen
 
Does anyone know if it would be bad to masturbate after the varicocele surgery. Had the surgery about 12 days ago and will see my urologist/surgeon on Wednesday. I hear some people say that if you masturbate , it is bad idea and that he had to get another surgery b/c of it.

I have blood results 6 months now after varicocele repair. the first result g with very little testosterone increase from 6,45 to 7.5 nmol/L, now after two weeks of HCG 3 times 1500 iu every other day and than 500 iu every other day my test increase but not much !?
it goes to 11 nmol/L- it is increase of almost double-but I think I should react better.
do you think that I lost leydig cells response to LH ( my LH and FSH are normal to upper limit )

With that it seems that leydig cells are responsive but I dont know if they have to be more responsive than that or should I wait for some time ?

any experience with that ?

not using anything for 4 years ( in that time my results was good-spermatogenesis great ! )

now have oligoasthenoteratozoospermia-I have to measure sperm count and other now after HCG but I will wait for a week or so for that to see if there is any improvement from HCG

should I go with longer on HCG to start maybe testicles if from any reason they went down in T production ?

also I am using tamoxifen 10 mg/d with it.

my Estradiol went from below limits to normal low levels. maybe is to low estradiol responsive for all. or I still have some vericocele inside doing ****.

any reply would be helpful
 
hey guys I had varicocele surgery about 12 days ago. I was told no heavy lifting. However, i did masturbate yesterday because i just could not stop any longer. Do you know if this was fine? My urologist yesterday did tell me no heavy lifting for another 7 days but never said anything about masturbation.

I read online that they say no sexual activity for 7 days, some say 2 weeks, some 3 and some 1 month. Would masturbation be somewhat the same as sex in terms of waiting after surgery from activities? Someone on some forum i read last year said he masturbated after 2 weeks and then had do the whole procedure again b/c the urologist did not say anything about masturbation.

Does anyone here know if i could have messed up everyday by masturbating about 14-15 days after surgery?
 
If it was a major no-no after surgery then your doctor would have said something. If you waited 11 days I'd say that was long enough. As long as you're not hurting now after doing it you should be fine. Just don't go overboard or anything.

Well i'll say this imeniaan. Yesterday when i masturbated i ejaculated alot than i ever did for the last 4 years. Might have been because i have no masturbated for 15-16 days?

Perpsplagon, he never mentioned no masturbating but i assumed he meant don't do much for first 2 weeks so i assumed it included everything. Reason i ask this was b/c some person on a forum said he masturbated 2 weeks after surgery and they said that he had to do the whole surgery again because of it and was mad b/c doctor never told him no masturbating.

By the way, i went to my endocrinologist today. She tells me i have to test my prolactin and testesterone again. It was 412 testerone and about 10.3 for free T. She said my free T is fine but my total testesterone was a bit on the low end but it is still fine. She does say that she don't want to have me go on hormone replacement therapy because i have no plans to get married soon.
 
I just tested HCG to pregnancy kit and there is no HCG inside so no wonder why my testosterone did not go higher !
 
Okay im getting very worried now. I masturbated yesterday as well so that meant 2 days in a row of masturbating about 15 days after the varicocele surgery. I noticed when i woke up in the afternoon today that my testicles look like it still has that sack of worms. I also notice some dried blood above my penis area and on my left side of my leg as well. This was not there 2 days ago when it was 15 days into the surgery, i did not see the varicocele. Could i have complicated it again?? I am so pissed off right now that i couldn't hold off masturbating any longer.

All the doctor said was no heavy lifting for another 7 days but did not mention masturbation. Right now i notice a bit of pain on my left side of the testicle. The only good thing about me masturbating was that i when i ejaculated, i released a lot of semen like i never have since before the accident. Im suppose to see doctor again in 6 weeks. Should i give him a call or see him earlier and tell him i am worried that my masturbation could have harmed the process and i might need to do another surgery?

I was recently scheduled for the conventional surgery but ended up calling and backing out for now. I have a grade III, and it's driving me crazy mentally at this point. I might try to get a referral to someone who does the microscopic.

I was a bit nervous by the size of the incision in the conventional...3 inches plus or minus. Seems like there would be a more likely chance of possible hernia or scar tissue problems. Also there's less chance of a recurrence or hydrocele with the microscopic approach. Problem is I live in northern Maine and I'm not sure where to go for this.

That's what I got and the varicocele is completely gone now. As far as the scarring it looks like a hernia scar. It's about 2 inches I'd say. Recovery was pretty quick too.

how long has it been since your surgery? have you had any problems, regrets? Im afraid that resuming sex/masterbation/lifting after healing will re-aggrivate this problem. I'd rather just not do surgery if those activities will bring the vericocele back. I think i am worrying too much about this procedure, many say its not too bad and my urologist says its a simple procedure.
 
So I'm 19 now and I think I have a low libido that is caused by my varicocele. I've never had a normal libido even through puberty. I've only recently realized that people view others differently than I do.

I'm going in for a consultation on what surgery options I have since two sperm tests showed up with "not normal" results. I personally believe it was the setting that caused a bad test, but that's just my opinion. I'll try to discuss if I can get my testosterone checked as well.

Will a normal libido spring out of this and will any genital growth come as well? I seldom rarely experience any physical or sexual attraction during a normal setting such as a night out or whatnot, so hopefully this will change.
