VARICOCELE...can it effect testosterone?

Androgel injections ? I never heard of them .... I know of Different Testosterone injections .... How long were you on the pump and at what dose ?

What was your T level again ?

If you have read through the posts you know that the recovery is not quick .... Here I am after 2 months and I am still not 100% .... I am very close to be what I would call normal again, but not quite there yet ....

You have to tell them that the varicocele causes you pain and discomfort .... What country are you in again ?

Initially I was on 4 pumps a day for 4 days. I did not feel any diff at all. so i stopped it. Then endo put me on androgel injection 200mg for 2 weeks. Its supposed give diff energy levels for 2 weeks. But I feel same every day. It has been 5 days on injection. I also have tingling sensation on left side of face and neck. I lost bulk of mass on thighs, buttocks and pelvic area and arms.when I sit on chair I feel pain at bottom os spne.My buttocks became too small. Do you think is it all becos of low test. I had Head, middle, lower spine and neck MRi.
There is some problem in L45heaache same timr-l5 in lower spine. But neurrologst says he done know why I have weight loss in those areas.Do you think all these things are due to low testostrone. Or something else is going on in my body.
I also had cortisol test. It's normal.
When I get erection i feel pain in nerves near bladder/urethra region. I also have head ache constantly.
All these happened along with varicocele.Doctors are not believing when i said this.May be it' my body behvaing like this. All of a sudden when varicocele happened, my left test shrank in size. I dont understand how can it reduce in size so soon.urologist said you odnt get size back even if you go for varicolectomy.I am seeing new viens on my flesh.
I dont get random erections, but i get nocturnal erections or I have to make some effort to get erections.I get erection so hard that I cant ejaculate .feel like something is obstructin at bladder area.
These are all my symptoms

hey everyone, what will happen if i don't get anything done about my varicocele ? are there any documents or studies that you could point me to whether it be for or against treatement ... also personal input would be appreciated. thank you guys so much and hope all is well with all of you.

It depends on how long you have varicoceles.

Sometimes men get varicoceles all of a sudden (doctots dont beleive it) or men see varicoceles all of a sudden. If you are planng for kids, do semen analysis. If count is ok , then you dont need surgery for now. if you are planing for kids in future down the lane, you need to have it removed , otherwise, varicoceles will reduce the sperm count and reduces the size of testicle. It all depends on age also. if you are young in late teens or early twenties, removing varicoceles will benefit a lot. it will also increase testosterone . But if you are in 30s or 40s, surgery wont do much benefit regarding testosterone or size of testicles. Please go thru all the posts in this thread. You will get more knowledge about varicocels. Read posts by Beckerj,Hyde,Leanguy and magazoid, they all had varicoceles.

Welcome to the board... the main reason I got an embolization was pain... and it helped eliminate 90% of it. I haven't recovered much size (a little bit), but at least the other one is healthy and seems to be enough to maintain normal T levels (for now). Good luck to you.

well i have had it for a year i think but went to the doc about 4 months ago just to make sure it wasn't anything serious. my general practitioner said to just let it be unless it starts hurting so i am kinda on the edge about what to do since i am 19 years old. anything else i should know or what should i do? go in and say that i want it taken care of and if so what is the best way to do so ? thank you all very much.

Can't tell you what to do, but I wish I'd fixed mine sooner... before the atrophy/pain set in. Took 4-5 years for that to happen. Most docs won't do the surgery unless you tell them it hurts all the time. In my case it was the truth. The embolization surgery was nearly painless, but I think a traditional micro surgery would have been more effective. I have no more pain, so I guess I can't complain.

I would get it fixed .... If it is gradde 2 or 3 .... Grade 1 I would wear a kock and keep and eye on your symptoms .... IF any present get it fixed .... I think the younger you are when you get it fixed the better chance of not having to go on HRT .... Just my opinion though .....

Well....i got the surgery done yesterday and it hurts like hell.
I don't know exactly what kind it was.....the did the incision 3-4 cm to the left above the penis and that's where the pain is comming from. It doesn't hurt anywhere else and the varicocele is still there..... is this normal? I asked the doc and he told me that the goal was to stop the blood flow there and not to cut the veins and that the results will show after a month or two. Anyone had this kind of surgery? The side efects are still there(low libido , ED, no spontaneous erections) but i guess i shoud wait to see any improvement.

Sounds like you had Micro-Surgery ....

Not to be rude though, you really should know what kind of procedure was done on you ....

If it was Micro-Surgery you may start feeling a bit more in the libido dept. in about two weeks .... For me it was short lived though ....

The varicocele is still there and will be for up to 6 months to a year ..... The veins die off over time ....

After three months My T level was still low and the urologist that did the surgery put me on Androgel ....

The thing is, in my country doctors aren't willing to share much information with their patients and you're in the dark most of the time. If i start asking too many questions they just get hostile like it's really bad for me to know that much....

What do you mean by microsurgery? Probably that was it beacause from what i managed to learn from the doc, the other surgery, where they cut the veins and do a lot of stitching, was really outdated.

Ok but is it normal to have no pain in the varicocele after surgery? What if the blood flow stops but the veins are still there and the symptoms remain? I mean is it possible that the surgery has no effect.

I would expect some pain initially, but fading in a few days.

I'm curious is there anyone who actualy returned to normal (the way he was before the varicocele ) after the surgery?
I understand that if you have it for a long time it does some damage but its hard to believe something that happend to me overnight can't be fixed.

I'm thinking about checking my hormones just to see if everything is ok, so which ones should i check?

Well depending on you age is what I have observed and read in medical reviews .... I would get your total T and free T tested .... Although JAN is better at what tests to get done .....

Hellooooo...

My name's Aaron and i just finished reading the 11 pages you guys have here.. Thanks Hyde for your easy to read replies and Megazoid for putting together a website (if you ever finish it :P) to help out other people with Varicoceles..

I'm 20 years old and have a stage 3 varicocele.. My left Testicle is extremely small about the size of a pistachio nut (without the shell). My right is regular size.. My scrotum hangs low about 80% of the time and the Varicocele is very apparent when you look at it.. The back of my scrotom on the left side looks like a bunch of 3-dimensional tubes that are quite big and my left-tesitcle is surrounded by tiny veins flopping down from the epididmys.

I was first Diagnosed with a varicocele at the age of 14-15.. i've had it all my life but it didn't become obvious 'til around that age.. Doctor said it was nothing to worry about and that i might have to have surgery later because of infertility problems.

Now at 20 i've started to go to the gym everyday, drink protein + eat quite a bit and I am not gaining muscle like i should be.. Talked to the doctor about my testosterone levels and she said i was just tripping out and at my age i shouldnt have a problem.. i'm just now starting to grow facial hair (last couple months and not fully everywhere) and i am 3 months from turning 21.

I wake up with morning woods.. i have a decent sex desire however my erection only holds for so long during sex.. It almost seems like i'm really horny all of the sudden and the desire goes away moments after being taken care of.. I've done tons of research on Varicoceles over the last couple years and have had an ultrasound done.

My questions are basically as follows: (for anyone who HAD the surgery)
1.) Did your testicle increase in size after a few months (if so by how much x1.5? x2?)
2.) Do you seem to last longer in the bed and seem to have stronger erections?
3.) Is your desire for sex increased?
4.) If you work out, did you notice any difference in your muscle development post-surgery?
5.) If your scrotum hung low before due to the large veins stretching the skin out, did the scrotum seem to suck back up and appear normal after week/months of recovery?

My ex-gf is more woman than i could handle and ridiculously hot so she's pretty much been my incentive to be the most man i can be after seeing what it's like to have such a woman.. I last anywhere between 30-70 minutes a session but it's not erect throughout the whole time and i go in and out of desire.

I've prolonged the surgery because i wanted to gain some muscle before getting it done and didn't feel ready for it. I am now really considering it because my sex desire has increased since i've quit smoking marijuana (2 months ago after smoking for 4 years) and changing a lot of lifestyle habits (diet, sleep, & excercise) but my Varicocele makes me feel like my testoserone is out of wack + i'm almost afraid to "hook up" with new women in fear of not being able to please to a decent degree =/.. which is pretty difficult 'cause i'm a good-looking man with a good personality and i LOVE women.... ever since i quit smoking and did my lifestyle changes i've really taken a toll to them and it seems to be that my mind is ingulfed in their beauty :D..

so yeah any input is EXTREMELY APPRECIATED>>.. i'll be checking in soon and giving more input..

Thanks..

Okay .... From the sounds of things you seem pretty okay .... cept for the obvious secondary male characteristics which are retarded it sounds .... And it could be T related .... I sounds like you may have low T influencing the bedroom as well but sounds like you have a handle on it so not to cause a major anxiety issue ....

The Dr that says that you are tripping out is WRONG .... You need to be aware of it and get it graded .... Is it a grade I, II, or III ? If it is II or III I would get he surgery ASAP as the studies we all quote were done with younger patients and the positive results experienced can be greatly attributed to the fact that they were young .... So .... If I had been 20 and had my surgery that I had done back in December i KNOW i would not be on TRT now ....

As you have read through the posts bear in mind the ages of those that are posting ....

As to your questions ....

1 - Yes mine did plump up, but due to the TRT i am on now I have lost some of the size ....
2 - I have always been good at controling myself in bed so i never had this problem before or after sugery .... The key here for control is flexing your PC muscles ....
3 - The first week to week and half I did notice i had a spike in my libido, but it was short lived .... I am 36 so I did not have the recovery i was hoping for .... Although there are som that say that it can take up to a year to come back to full recovery after the surgery .... Some of us are impatient and are in relationships that ca not survive for that long .... So we opt for the TRT ....
4 -I do not work out, but i am not a wimp by any stretch .... Now that i am on TRT i notice i do have some more definition ....
5 -My scrotum seems back to normal .... This is 6 months after surgery ....

30-70 minutes is a great session man .... Just remember we are not porn stars nor are we WITH porn star women ....

Good for you ont he lifestyle changes ....

No .... I have run into a road block and working back around it .... On the 15th of May I was running low on Androgel due to self medicating up to 6 pumps a day .... So I spaced out my dosing until the 27th when I was able to refill the script ....
When I went to see the Doc I gave him the write up from DR Crisler on his best methods for HRT .... I asked him about HCG and he said he didn't see any reasons to add it into the mix until he had a better handle on my lab results which I have to get done at the end of the month due to the fact I ran out of the androgel ....
I told him I felt really GREAT at the 6 pumps a day and he agreed and bumped the script up to that for me so I was pleased ....

I will press for the HCG after I get back on track I am now on day 8 of being back on the androgel daily .....

How are things with you ?

Did you read my post #73?

My concentration is improved. My libido is improved. But I have constant head ache and brain fog. I don't have muscle gain yet . Whatever i eat, its accumulating at belly. I just want to see how my levels will be after 1 or 2 months of using androgel.

How is your sleep? ANy problems? My sleep has been improved , but not that much.

hey guys, haven`t posted here in a long time. in 2days i will do surgery, on the left side coz the doc said he doesnt want to operate the right side also ( bcoz it`s grade 1 and he says, i quote: "varicocele surgery on the right side is almost never done!" ).
i will post back after i return from the surgery ( thursday i think ) and say how things went.
on the other side , i`ve taken a herbal thingie for about 10 days now , and all i have to say is that i am more than happy about it because now i can sleep 8-12 hours in a row, not wake up every 3-4 hours to go to the bathroom , and the sleep itself is great, no more vivid dreams or anything, i feel great waking up in the morning, in case you`r interested the stuff is called mumio /mumjio , i just stated this because i don`t think i`m the only one with sleeping problems caused by this.

and 1 more thing i`d like to ask you guys that have already had the surgery :
after it, when can i resume workouts ?
i was told swimming would be the best way to go ,but if i also go to the gym a bit can i also do abs? if so how long should i wait b4 swimming and goin to the gym ?

i don`t know what kind of mumio they have, i got the brown one from kazahstan i think. the supplement shop from my gym has it that`s were i got it from.

in the past week it`s done pretty well for me in many ways, i mean i`ve been taking ZMA for like 1 month but like 2 days after this mumio thing kicked in i started to sleep like baby again, and gym-related well i haven`t been taking anymore supplements for like 2 months now coz i haven`t been in any mood for training , dropped the training schedule to half , but just yesterday i went to the gym a bit and my strenght is back to what it was like half a year ago ( i benchpressed 9 reps with 100kg , i weigh around 72kg ). i can`t say its a wonder thing ,it may just be a placebo effect because a couple of more people told me it helped them alot also
but i guess you can give it a try.

This thread is really interesting... i've noticed a whole bunch of inflammed veins on my left testiscle interwined. It's very obvious to see and feel. No mistake that something is wrong with it.

I am 19 years old and had it diagnosed about a year ago. I feel no pain, no discomfort, or anything except the fact that I know its there.

I have no problem with any testosterone related stuff. I get random erections, can get it up when I want, and desire is really high.

I've also been able to perform in the gym really well and gained a lot of muscle mass for an asian male (Asian male apparently has the lowest testosterone of all races)

So I don't know if it has affected any of my testosterone.

The doctor said I don't need to get it treated unless it starts hurting and mine is a very mild case. Although the left testiscle looks pretty damn gross.

Just my input.

Question: Does anyone know how much it costs to get a checkup on testosterone levels? I am interested in finding out but don't have insurance -_-

Monitor your testosterone level, testicle size and pain/discomfort. If they change, don't wait for treatment.

As jansz mentioned, life extension is a great place to order tests... its about $100.

well i got the surgery 3 days ago , pretty easy , the doctor that did the anestezia was really dumb, but except that it`s ok, i don`t know what improvements should i be looking for, but i`m really curious when can i resume sports activities?

so u guys that had surgery, can you tell me anything about resuming sports ? i was thinking to try swimming in about 1 month , but meanwhile can i do pushups/ or arm exercises ?
i`m asking this coz i didnt really get a chance to talk to the doc that operated on me.

oh the most important question i have so far:
i have a swelling on the left side of the groin , below the surgery , like i had hernia or something, and some weird sensations there going down to the testicle, is that normal after the surgery?

From what I went through .... This is normal .... No Worries .... But if you are uncertain, call the operating Doc .... Don't forget your 3 month follow up appointment .... Get your labs before that appointment .... Make sure to add in a PSA, LH, FSH .... And the obvious T and Free T ....

This way when you go in for the follow up you have more amunition if the surgery didn't do what you are hoping it would do to show that your numbers are or aren't improving ....

Keep an eye on how you feel .... Are you on any Anti D's ?

Might want to get some Wellbutrin .... I did and it helped a lot ....

beckerj,

whats your T levels now?

I just had my labs done and I have the results ....

Testosterone Serum 735 (241-827)

Free Testosterone 27.6 (8.7-25.1)

Estradiol Sensitive 26 (3-70)

I still have some ED troubles but trying to work through them as I
think they may be in my head ....

Wow, pretty good numbers bro! I think if you relax a bit, your ED will go away. I know it's hard (no pun intended!), I have the same problem off & on.

Did you have your PSA tested before & after varicocele repair? Mine has been going up recently (still in the safe zone-- for now). I'm trying to find out if the operation can affect PSA... seems any messing around down there can do it... even sex or bike riding... both of which I enjoy regularly :)

Those are very good numbers.Whats your next step. Are you going to stop using androgel for few days and check levels again?

Question to you? Did you have sleep problems before surgery? If so , are they resolved after surgery?

No I didn't get it before .... And won't be getting it until October .... As per orders from the Doc .... I won't lie, I am a bit concerned not to get it checked until then .... I may call him and ask him to write a script for it .... I'll keep you posted ....

Yeah I saw that your PSA is going up .... Are you still on the Androgel ? OR TRT ? That is a bit scary .... At least where I am standing .... KEEP an EYE on IT !

I am going to a shrink tomorrow .... I figure I better hit this on all sides .... Am getting more confidence .... So I may have it licked in the next couple of months .... My head was not the first thing to go from this so I am guessing that will be the last thing that will return .... SMILE

Keep us in the loop man ....

I went and saw the new Endo .... In some ways it was a waste .... But the man did spend a bit of time with me and made me relax a bit about thyroid issues .... I thought I may have the beginings of Grave's Disease as it runs in the family .... I asked him about HCG and he told me that it was more expensive than the Androgel .... WOW ! But he said that he would talk to some of his colleagues and see if they may have a better grip on TRT .... SO I am hoping I hear from him an a couple of weeks .... I would really like to give the HCG a try .... I told him that my LH and FSH numbers before Androgel were pretty good and I might respond to HCG .... My thinking is maybe add HCG in and then slowly decrease the Androgel so I can Mono Therapy with HCG that would be better in the long run as we all know that T alone does not give you all the hormones that natural production does ....

Fingers Crossed ....

As for my sleep issues .... YES they are gone now ....

What is your SHBG?

It wasn't included in the last round of labs .... before TRT it was like 18 I think .... It's in one of my posts, where I listed my labs from March ....

Had my varicocele
embolized on wed 2nd july. Op was about 1 1/2 hours as the radiologist struggled to get into the right vein but no problem other than the strange sensation of the tube as it passed my heart and spine. Entry point was into my right arm.

Gradually increasing discomfort but still very mild as the vein clots up around the coils expect that will improve and pass over the next couple of days.

Varicocele still very pronounced though but dont expect that to shrink for a while yet.

Had blood taken at 10am on 30th june result was free T 17.6nm/L which I am told is normal.
This surprised me as I tick off all the symptoms of low T.
Will look to get a wider range of blood work done.

What do you guys think of my blood result? I was positive it would come back very low. Was expecting something below 10?

Can varicocele be caused by testicular torsion? I had surgery for torsion 10 years ago, but was never scheduled for a followup with a urologist as they said I'd know if I had a problem when I was ready to have kids. Didn't think much of it as I was just a kid...

[UPDATE] 11/07/08]Just been for a follow up at the docs.

Apparently the testosterone result above was'nt for free testosterone but was for serum testosterone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Despite her asking for free to be measured.

So I have SERUM T levels of 17.6NM/L.

So am I right in thinking that does'nt tell me a great deal?

I have been referred to a urologist and I will be requesting a few more tests.

I know this is'nt in my head but thinking my free T levels were 17.6nm/l was making me think maybe its all been psychological!!!!!

I was diagnosed with a left varicocele. Same symptoms from a while : low sex drive, low energy, etc.
My questions are :
1. Could the varicocele be provoked by doing regular hot baths ? for like 1 months (2,3 times/week) ?
2. How long can a varicocele which is palpable and visible through skin form ?
3. What is the better method of removing it ?
Thanks and all best wishes to you all.

It has been 2 months now since i had my surgery - still the same problems low libido, ed, pe, no morning wood.......is it possible that after some time i would start feeling better? I don't know if two months are enough. And another thing - if i ask the doctor to test my hormones is it possible that just a slight imbalance is causing this problems or the difference will be clearly visible?

ED depends heavily on e2 status.
E2 analysis using blood are shaky when good test is used and worthless when other tests are used.

If you are able do 24hr urine analysis.

Best if at RheinLabs.com
Rhein does only one test,no confussion whenasking for it.

But I think it should be ok at genova Diagnostics.
Genova does lots of different tests that sounds similar.
You would want
EstroEssence Complete.
.
.
With ether of this tests you would gt muh more info than just E2.
Post it here, we will analyze your situation.

you need to check your testosterone.
Before going to TRT use some herbs if it resolves your problems.

The new doc told me it was all psychological, but he agreed to do a test of free testosterone and TSH. Is it possible that whatever is causing my problems wouldn't show on this test? I'm starting to think it's really psychological.

How old are you ?

2 months after surgery for Bi lateral varicocele I was still in the same place you are now .... I still am to a point and I do think it is psychological for me now .... a year of not having these things work like they should takes a toll in your mind .... So in some respects they could be in your head ....

The lack of morning wood though is a symptom and not in your head ....

The studies that show recovery say that it is up to a year before you are totally recovered .... Although most of us, me included, did not want to wait that long and have since gone on HRT .... Which has its own set of issues I am finding .... High Blood Pressure being one of them ....

I would suggest that you get the labs done that will tell you the following ....

PSA - This is mainly for your own info and a good reinforcement if HRT is to be pursued ....

TT - This is Total Testosterone

Free T - This is Free Testosterone

LH and FSH - This will be inportant to have to show how the boys work all in all ....

TSH - This will tell you how your Thyroid is working .... You can also get the T3 and T4 .... These are not as important at this point though .... As I do not think your Thyroid is the issue ....

For me it is the worry about what it could be that drives us crazy and to honestly come close to accepting the idea that this could all be in our heads ....

I have been dealing with this for the past year .... IT has ruined my life .... Although the T has helped .... The issues that it has raised in the bedroom alone has really put a damper on things .... I am set up to see a shrink now on the 23rd .... The ED issues can be related to both the Low T and the fact that the cycle of failures have just become a given .... And having a partner that understands is SO important .... !!!!

I'm 20.
I live in Eastern Europe btw and i only tested these 4 hormones cause it's pretty expensive.

TSH - 1.56 0.27- 4.2
Prolactin - 224,9 86-390
Testosterone - 7.08 2.8-8.0 ng/ml
Free Testosterone - 8.2 5-25 pg/ml

I think my free T is kinda low, could it be the reason for the low libido and the other problems?
