trouble pulling w. 60cc syr & 22g 1.5" needle

I am not sure what I am doing wrong, but I have searched the archives and can't find anything similiar, so i thought I'd ask here.

I am trying to transfer 100cc of tren acetate in an oil suspension through a whatman and into a sterile vile, and using a 60cc syr & 22g 1.5" needle I am unable to pull any liquid from the tren/oil suspension vial.

There is just too much pressure inside the bottle, and i simply pull air, even with the bottle inverted. It is very difficult to even pull the plunger back. The only thing I am doing differently is using a 22g needle instead of the 18g that i usually pull with when doing research chemicals. Is this my problem?

I feel a bit sheepish posting about this problem, but i don't want to botch things up, so I thought I would appeal to those of you out there who might be able to help me and explain exactly what I am doing wrong.

Well it worked with 18g and now it isn't with a 22g. I would try the 18g and NO reason to feel sheepish about the question.

Thats what I do, just unscrew the needle and suck it up with just the syringe. Sucks up nice and fast. Plus its just easier to work with when its in a beaker.
 
Look, pulling or pushing out anything with a 60cc syringe requires a HELLUVA LOT of force. Even with a 18g pin I struggle to draw anything into a 60cc barrel. I learned to ditch the 60cc syringes after my first large homebrew batch. I suggest you switch to a 20 or 30cc syringe--it'll take a LITTLE bit longer but is far easier.

I decided to use 20-30cc syringes from now on because although they're only half the size(hold 1/2 the volume of a 60)they only require about 1/10th the force to draw/disperse oil, which is really important when filtering through a whatman. You have to put over 100lbs of force minimum on a 60cc syringe to run a normal 300mg/mL oil solution through a .2um whatman. Hell, I had mine in a caulking gun and the gun was getting to the point where it was bending the plunger of the 60cc barrell in half, LOL.

Both this and the idea mentioned above of decanting the vial into a beaker and drawing with just the syringe (and not the needle) sound great.

lucky for me there's no rest for the weary, and the chemical research continues next week. I will adapt either/both of these ideas and hopefully save myself an hour of labouring over a 60cc syringe trying to filter 100cc through a whatman...

There is definitely a trade off between volume and pressure. 20's are ok, especially if you are used to freakin 60's, but I usually just go with 10's mostly because they hold a good amount and you can still get it done fairly quickly.
 
From my personal experience, after some hard labor I looked for better alternatives to do proper filtering.

1) Use the .22 stericup vacuum filter/ pump combo

OR (my own invention)

2) Using the pump / whatamen filter combo:

The idea is to reverse the pressure of the sterile vial which makes filtering a lot easier, faster and can be done unnattended.

[FONT=arial, helvetica]1) Set up the pump as shown in the picture.

2) Cut just a bit of one of the tips included with the pump and attach it to the other side of the hose (you can probably see it attached on the picture). This is done to make a perfect fit for any needle (recommend 23g or 25g).

3) Insert the needle attached to the pump into the sterile vial.

4) Suck up the suspension using your 60cc syringe as described by neuromancer (without the needle)

5) attach the whataman filter into the loaded 60cc syringe and attach an 18g needle to the filter. Insert this setup into the vial

6) Now you have 2 needles attached to the vial (one with whataman filter and other with pump)

7) Use the pump to create a vaccum. where the pressure is 10 or 15 (maybe 20) and you could either assist it by pressing on the plunger or just leave it. It will eventually filter.

Very nice setup Roccky08, Idea with the whatman filter/hand pump connected to a needle combo is a very good one, will try out and let you know how it works. Also using caulking gun with the 60 cc syringe whatman filter assembly.
