Troops unite to save soldier knifed in head

Jayhawkk

Legend
This guy was in my unit before I got out. Not the brightest guy but this story is impressive.

It felt like a nasty sucker punch. Yet when he strained his eyes to the hard right, there was something that didn’t belong: the pewter-colored contour of a knife handle jutting from his skull.

Sgt. Dan Powers, stabbed in the head by an insurgent on the streets of East Baghdad, triggered a modern miracle of military medicine, logistics, technology and air power...

Wow! And "Only his balance was badly skewed." Lucky SOB I tell ya. And "Pending the success of a follow-up skull repair in January, Powers hopes to rejoin his unit as a squad leader before May." Amazing attitude.

So wait a second. They detained the haji who did this? F'in guy would have gotten blasted for sure. Damn. Hopefully they'll put this bastard to death.

Amazing story

I still cant believe the knife cut through his temporal lobe and he didn't lose function of his hearing (the superior temporal gyrus has a place where the cochlea sends audio signals on their way to the cerebral cortex), speech (Wernicke's area of the temporal lobe is connected with language processing, comprehension, naming, etc), visual processing, and any episodic memory (specifically the hippocampus).

A true american hero no doubt.

This guy certainly was lucky! Goes to show that even with massively superior firepower and technology, warmaking is not without its risks...even from the most elementary of weapons.

I was looking desperately to find what happened to the dirty little rat. Detained... I suppose since the knife was lodged in the soldier's head, the insurgent was technically "unarmed".
Scum of the earth... I know the Iraqi laws are pretty tough, with executions not uncommon!
Glad to hear the Sergeants going to make it - quite a story.

This came directly from the article.

"Army judge advocate general prosecutors later asked if they could have it. Powers didn’t mind. Iraqi prosecutors wanted to present the 9-inch blade as evidence during his attacker’s trial in Baghdad, which admitted Powers’ testimony via teleconference. He’s unsure of the man’s fate, though he was told the Iraqis planned to “lengthen his neck a little bit.” "

Good.

Mind-boggling!
