Training whilst ill

I've been struck down with some horrible sickness bug that seems to be doing the rounds this time of year and I've tried to train through it, with little success. If it was a normal cough/cold I'd train through it no problem, but this one f*ckin hurts...bad.

Is it a bad idea to train whilst ill and better to just rest up or do you beat it out of you by getting a sweat on?
How does everybody else train around illnesses and how ill do you have to be to take yourself out of the gym?

If you are truly ill and have been training for a while without a deload, I would just take the week off. If it is a small cold, I would deload.

If you are contagious though, do not go to the gym. Not only will it take you longer to recover, but you will make others sick. You need to take others health into consideration.

Why is everyone so afraid to take time off? If you can't give it 100% and achieve improvement from your efforts, what good does it do?

If you have some sniffles, fine. Work through it and use your judgement. But if it is bad and you aren't making progress, who are you gonna be a hero for? Just recover and get back at it.

if you have only some sniffles, you can also make a deload/active recovery. but of course you can also take a few times off the gym, very good for your tendons, joints

Sounds like you might have or be getting bronchitis. If so then training is the last thing you want to do as the forced breathing will only inflame the bronchial tubes more. This year bronchitis and worse walking pneumonia instances have been much higher. The stuff going around gets into the lungs and doesn't heal on it's own leaving a gradual build up of inflammation that crescendos into bronchitis or walking pneumonia.

If it hurts then get it looked at. Bronchitis often requires antibiotics, AND an inhaler. Especially if you are still working out. At the minimum go see your doctor, or request a sample inhaler from them. Having a cold for a month is neither normal or okay.
