Nah columns in multi story buildings we have to account for out of plane bending, the only way to do that is 2nd ODE's its called Pdelta effects....columns are normally only under axial load, i.e. load at some concentric point or at their centeroidal axis...etc.etc.etc. however thay can develop forces that make them act like a beam./.;.;.blahblahblah.....
Now if that doesn't give u a boner, you got issues!
I suppose that's why arches were developed...to dissipate columns' downward, yet outward (non-axial) loads/forces. Oh FUQ me...I don't know. Fun to think about it tho!
