The "You need to eat more" never ending debate

Like McChicken / McDouble from McDonalds.. I have them like once a week usually on weekends to boost my cals up. I know it's bad foods and stuff but when I'm at the 4000 cals mark with healthy foods I get 1000 cals extra from fast food places and hit the 5000 mark.

dude if ur trying to bulk up thats awesome food. It wont make you lean but who needs lean if they are simply trying to grow. That is straight power food. I eat 2 Mcdoubles a day following each workout and then have 4 little homeade quesadillas. Thats about 1500 calories for less than 3 bucks.

When you said junk food i thought you meant food like potato chips. Mcdonalds may not be lean, but I wouldn't call it junk so long as you use those calories

I never thought of it as that way, I thought you were gonna say something bad lol well so I guess I'll be adding that to 2-3 days a week I usually get 1 McChicken + 1 McDouble sometimes I feel like adding some ice cream as well.
I do eat about 4000cals of healthy stuff + 1000 cals of fast food and I still struggle to gain weight... hopefully my stomach will stretch out soon and I can bump into 6000 cals daily.

Get two mcdoubles. cut out the mcchickken unless you just can't handle the two mcdoubles anymore. I get sick of it sometimes so i switch to burger king lol. At BK the spicy chicken sandwich is about as many calories as the mcdouble. The mcchicken has much less calories than the mcdouble, and much less protein. mcdouble is ultimately a dollar better spent though.

Haha you read my mind! I ALWAYS get spicy chicken crisp in burger king with a whopper JR. and some fries. Thanks for the tip, I did notice McDoubles make me a lot fuller than McChickens, I'll try to eat both McDoubles though I love chicken over meat.

I am one of those people whom know they do not eat enough to gain size, and gaining size is my goal. I am 21y.o 5'11 roughly 170lbs, and I look lean. I definitly would not call my self skinny, but I am lean. I do not have abbs and I cant really put on size so I feel as if I am caught in the middle here.

I recently decided since its already basically April, I should cut out all fast food and frozen foods + junk foods, and start eating healthy to get abbs and maybe get some lean mass. BTW Healthy as in protein shakes/bars for after work outs and snakes. Breakfest= egg whites or wholegrain bagel w a fruit.
Lunch= Grilled chicken with alpine lace, turkey or more eggs. Tuna etc
Dinner= Grilled or baked chicken, with a side such as mashed potatoes, or steak.

So including protien shakes/bar I will consume abour 5-6 meals a day. Ive actually followed this for about 3 weeks now, any my stomach is getting more defined obvi, but once agian no gains.

I always thought eating Mcdonalds or such fast foods is the worst thing one can do while trying to bulk. I thought eating such foods one will just become a fat slob. I am very surprised so many aboard eat fast food on bulking. I thought bulkers still try to consume healthy food, just in a larger portion.

So basically, if one is trying to bulk, just dont focus on protien and just eat like an animal? Im assuming along with that an intense routine must follow to break your fat/calories down to you dont get a nice round belly?

Its still worthwhile for your diet to be controlled. But if you've got 3500 calories a day to spend, if 700 of them get spent on an ice cream from cold stone and you hit your solid food protein target and healthy fat target then screw where the calories came from. Would natural whole healthy foods be better? definitely. But if you have a hard time doing it either from a convenience standpoint (packing a 1200 calorie healthy lunch for work) or just eating the larger volume that healthy foods generally are, then the junk isn't too bad for some of the calories.

Really though even if you think the volume of food is too high for eating healthy foods, all you need to do is add 2 tablespoons of almond or natural peanut butter 3x a day. Thats near 500 calories and is not an effort to add.

Dude, you grew an inch since you first signed up here? LOL

Anyways, it's much harder to gain muscle than to lose fat. So, when I'm bulking, I eat a tremendous amount of calories otherwise I'm like you and I'll lose BF but I won't gain size. I found adding a couple of "bad" meals/snacks per day really helps me pack on size. I kid you not when I say I eat around 5000 cals per day and eating actually gets tiring. Sometimes I have to force feed myself and it gets to the point that I'm disgusted of food. During a bulk, I'll eat tons of ice cream just for extra cals. And my last meal of the day is 2 scoops of Syntha 6 with 2 cups of skim milk (800+ cals). If I feel I haven't eaten enough that day, I'll throw in another bowl of ice cream.

I disagree. I USED TO THINK exactly like this, but at the end of the day its genetics, genetics, genetics. Your body will only get so big, no matter how much you feed it. There comes a point where you either have the right chemicals present to grow, or you dont. I dont believe you need to be eating 5-6,000 cals/day to grow. Most people would continue to grow just fine if they would eat a balanced diet and quit frikken overtraining

Then we'll just agree to disagree. You can't make a blanket statement like that because everybody differs. I've been training for 17+ years and I'm naturally a 160-165lbs body but the last few years I've been upping my cals and now I walkaround at the 200 mark, pretty lean. In my powerlifting years I stayed at 165lbs and couldn't gain weight if I wanted to, but now with a slower metabolism and the extra cals, I'm comfortable at 200lbs. When I run my next cycle I'll be upping to 5500 cals shooting for 215-220lbs.

Thanks guys! I think im going to continue eating the way I am, and when I need that extra calorie push I can go out and get something from fast food, or even pound down some ice cream or natural peanut butter.

I am also going to carry around a little notepad, therefore I can track what meals I eat and when, and having that around me all the time will remind myself to EAT EAT EAT.

I just think most people wildly over-estimate their protein needs and stupidly under-estimate their carbohydrate needs.

You see people who factually know they've had 300g of protein, but they've no idea how many grams of carbohydrate they've had. Infact, i went a few years purely counting my protein intake, and forgetting my carbohydrate intake.

If you want to bulk and gain size, you need to be re-stocking your glycogen levels and you need to be lifting heavy enough to force your muscles into growth. Obviously protein is required, but not at the crazy amounts suggested around here.
