The Unofficial Ice Cream thread

yea but i don't there's no Aldi's in WA yet and also it's limited edtion. i wish we could get the snickerdoodle skinny cows i really wan't to try them only been on the caramel ones lately. i don't really mind low calorie ice creams just makes for nice mental rewards when dieting.

Snickerdoodle skinny cows exist??? I tried the mint chocolate cone in the US and loved it.

I agree with this... Since I got my own ice cream maker though, I make my own every night. Powder flavor of choice+greek yogurt or cottage cheese+cashew milk... I can make like a pint and a half's worth of ice cream and have it be like 350cals and not just full of junk. its awesome.

I need this!!!!!!! There's a lot of flavors that I won't try. Anything that has too much going on, aka rocky road...

Had the edys pub pie custard, base isn't super thick but flavor was great with decent mix ins a must for pub lovers........ B

Lake Effect - Paula's Glazed donut review
(see pic above)

Upon opening the pint, I was met with a white base with a piece of donut protruding out. I immediately thought vanilla, but the description on the container says "glazed donut flavoured ice cream". I'm not sure what that's supposed to taste like so I was quite intrigued. I recently had an opportunity to try Paula's donuts (Sour cream glazed, red velvet, angel cream filled & jelly filled) and was blown away. All were amazing and took me back to my childhood when donut shops used to make everything fresh in-store in the early morning instead of the mass produced, defrosted ish today. But back to the pint. The base was very soft and creamy. Although I wouldn't have identified it as "glazed donut flavoured", it was very pleasant. I would rate it over any B&J base I've tried and put it very close to a Graeter's or Jeni's base.
The donut mix-ins were spread evenly throughout the base. You don't get a piece in every spoonful which is really my only complaint with this pint. However, the donut pieces are massive, I would estimate you get 1/2-3/4 of a donut in the pint. I ended up breaking some of them up mid-way through the pint so I did get some in every spoonful. I love Paula's glazed donut so eating the last half pint in this fashion was heaven. I just wish Lake Effect did this work for me.

Overall I really enjoyed this pint and would give it an A.

Thanks to mkretz for hooking me up with these Lake Effect pints. I wish I had a legit artisan ice cream store in my area.

Nah. Bro you know how I am when there ice cream in front of me ... I go to town! I'll try to remember to grab a shot of the sponge toffee although I might not get to it for a couple weeks.

Just had a very odd experience. the entire glaze/swirl was all on the top of the pint of ice cream.
interesting.

that sounds crappy... that's a topping at that point not a swirl ha. I bet you just ended up digging and mixing it in huh?

New Orleans Ice Cream Co. Banana's Foster:

As I worked through the pint I was very displeased with the amount of real banana pieces. I got one banana piece throughout my entire pint. Besides the amazing Burnt Brown Sugar Caramel Tasting glaze the banana base on its own is pretty mediocre. The title is misleading as its more of a caramel/banana base. The nutmeg and raisin I will say are in every single bite as a minor aftertaste that is faint. Overall they did a good job to replicate the dessert, but failed when it came to the mix-in aspect of the banana pieces.

Grade: C+

That bad eh?
That was one of the two from your stash that really intrigued me, along with beignets flavour.

Archer farms cookie dough and brownies was pretty good. Base was like an edys or turkey hill.. But also lower cal. The best part was the brownie and cookie dough mix ins. You typically get one of each in every bite and the taste of the individual mix ins knocks the socks off of BnJ. Solid B due to a lacking base cream

Graeter's Bourbon Pecan Chocolate Chip

Overall this is a good pint (Cookies and Cream, Black Raspberry, and Buckeye Blitz being my top 3 with Salted Caramel Fudge Brownie coming in 4th). A slight downgrade because I am not the biggest fan of alcohol but the uniqueness won back some points. If you are a nut lover (pecans), and enjoy diversity with a bourbon base this may strike you. Graeter's will always be known for their massive and delicious chocolate chips. You can always count on Graeter’s for sticking to what has made them famous….great bases with huge mix ins.

They finally opened a Greaters in IL, about an hour from me.

I'm going to wait though until we go to Louisville Ky in June since we already planned on taking daughters there.

Get the cookies. Thank me later.
Grab some Jeni's you did not get or Graeters.

The ice cream on its own is just okay, but the combination with the Snickerdoodle cookies was the GOAT IC sandwich.

Ben & Jerry's Save Our Swirled:

Overall Ben & Jerry's took a stab with this limited batch and throwing new aspects into their ice cream. I was a little let down with the strength in flavor the raspberry base offered. The marshmallow and raspberry swirls on the other hand made up for the lacking flavor in the base. Each spoonful combined the aspects of the swirls to compliment the base to enhance this pint. Lastly the inclusion of the Dark & White Fudge Ice Cream cones was a hit. These mix-ins are big in size, plentiful in amount, and provide a melt in your mouth mix-in.

Talenti Tiramisu Gelato

Besides a good base, and a slight swirl this pint really does not have much more to offer. I personally enjoyed HD better because the flavoring was denser and the ladyfinger pieces included added an incredible mix-in. Talenti's coffee base is mild, but allows the mascarpone to shine through. The cheesiness isn’t overpowering and blends well with the coffee flavor. Combined with the hints of cocoa, you’re getting a good replica of a Tiramisu Gelato. Add in the ribbon of dulce de leche and that is Talenti Tiramisu in a nutshell.

Disappointing

Have you reviewed Roasted and Toasted yet Bob?

Just had it last night

Lol never!
Eat them in one sitting dammit ;)

I liked Roasted and Toasted B+

But not nutty at all. Not even a bit.
Its a better fudge pint than New York Super Fudge Chunk IMO.
Super fudgey with little crunchy bits from nut mix ins
Even the marshmallow swirl (which I love in Phish Food) was buried in fudgeyness.

As a chocoholic I enjoyed it

As someone buying it for the title, get something else

Can only comment on the speculoos but if you like cookie butter, you'll love it. The base is good (nothing insane) but the mix in bits and the cookie butter core are epic.

The pb core is amazing as well. Both top 5 flavors from b&j

I loved the peanut butter cookie core as well. I grabbed the spectacular. It was a tossup between that and Haagan Daas peanut butter pie

PB Pie is pretty awesome too.

I thought PB Core was a B...

PB Half Baked tomorrow for me :)

Maybe some PB Oren's too lol

PB half baked not bad, the brownies are awesome. Greyston bakery has stepped it up from the past! They are thick and moist.

Looking fwd to it, will save phish food for next cheat ...

I have pretty much agreed with all your ice cream reviews for the flavours I've tried. I'm expecting a B+ lol.

In my experience there is always something lacking with B&J pints, either base/mix-ins sux or not enough mix-ins.
My fav so far is Cinnamon Buns (great mix-ins, ok base)

Saw these guys for a $1.49 (that's relatively cheap for Canada lol)

Base was decent, but those mix-ins .... I was getting pure pb cookie dough for the first 1/2 of the pint, sometimes two pieces per scoop. The brownies seemed to be concentrated in the bottom half of the pint but were massive. I'd rate it as the best brownie mix-in I've had in an ice cream.

Overall, B+ is what I would rate it too ...It is the best B&J pint I've had to date, with Cinnamon Buns a close second. I would buy it again if it's still around especially considering we don't have that many B&J flavours in Canada or any other decent brands for that matter.
