TGR's Modified PowerBuilding v2.0

I have to say this must be a something you younger guys like and do. To each their own I guess. I'm old school so when going for a PR you go all out. Never looked at PR's the way some of you guys do either though. I'm the very opposite. I like to go to a weight I think I may fail on. If I fail then I can judge how much more I have to work to get there. There are levels of failure. Usually you can tell how much you are off. Nothing wrong with either thought processes, just different training styles and philosophies.

I have felt that way with deadlifts because I feel so confident and comfortable doing them.

The reason I understand about not going for the PR is my previous pain issues on bench and being scared that pain is going to become a torn muscle.

For squat, it's because I know my form lacks at heavier weights. My core buckles, I shift on my toes at times, etc.

I don't feel like my form ever fails on deads. The last time I failed one I didn't bend, I just let go.

EDIT:

As for not going for 530, I get the confidence side of it too. When I failed 460 months back my mentally had me questioning my pulls.

Interesting study on benefits of NOT training to failure:

Mental is a big part of it. Like I said, it's not like there is a right or wrong. It really boils down to what works for you. I just found the differences interesting.

Not that u need help or need or analyze your deadlift thought it was a good vid

That's almost exactly what I do. I don't have rolling plates, so I get my shins right up on it and sit back until I'm about to fall, then I grab the bar. Or grab and sit. It w in the Deadlift Dynamite ebook I have.

Gonna save this video to share with others. Thanks.

It what I've been working on Tuesday trying to sitting back more

During my warmup sets I practice sitting back as far as I can and only grab the bar before I fail.

When I first read that chapter in the book id practice in my kitchen while having coffee. lol

I think you're viewing a PR attempt with a different mindset - your approach is viewing it as "I want to lift exactly as much as I possibly can" as opposed to "I want to get as strong as I possibly can". Both represent a desire for maximum performance, but the prior focuses on now - a competition mindset - while the latter focuses on progression in training, which can later be used for success in actual competition (gym records don't mean as much to competitors, typically).

No, not really. I've never maxed out on any exercise. I've never shot for a one rep max. Could be I just know in the back of my mind what I think I can do and for how many reps. I increase weight typically when I can do 8 reps. Bench I increase at 5 reps but increase 20lbs.
Granted, I don't do squats or deads anymore and haven't for 12 years and those are the 2 exercises this really pertains to. Both philosophies will lead to progression. At age 52 I'm still setting a few PR's and have been steadily.
Although I stated I don't do squats or deads I still get maximum work from hack squats and leg press, just wanted to point that out, I'm not an upper body only guy. 8 fused disc prevent me from doing this 2 exercises due to mobility and spinal compression.

Did lots of stretching last night and thus morning. Let's go get 520!!

I did the wheel o death last night. I'll do it again tonight.

I expected 480 to fly. When it didn't, I almost lost confidence. Then said F that, it's going down. Or up, I mean.

This angle shows perfectly my setup. Shins upright, grab, sit, and stand up.

I haven't liked any rap in years, but today's singles were fueled by 2PAC.

Thanks for the banded hip series capo. I really like them.

Weee!

Good lifting to you today!

Nice deads man! And congrats on 520lbs- that's huge!!!

The 480 didn't look slow. The 520 didn't look slow either! The 455 was slower than both of the others but with a tremendous hold! Congrats Thomas, well deserved there!!!

Thanks man. My knees looked like they were struggling. lol

Everything looked slow and horrible and you should probably give up now while you're ahead.....

Lol but seriously great work; keep laying down the hammer homie - all the work is paying off and keep believing in what you're doing. It's working.

I did lots of quad and shoulder stretches and PAPs.

Let's get this FS PR chain Rollin!

I have way more strength in my legs, but my shoulders need more callouses and I need to fix the want to lean forward.

I have a feeling I am permanently a 'no hands' front squatter. :(

Congrats on the front squat PR. You're right around where my max is on Fronts. 255 is heavy if you're doing cross arm!
Have fun today man!!

I unrack cross armed, but then I let go and hold my arms out like superman or hold my hands together in front like I'm praying. It keeps my shoulders up better than cross armed.

Thanks Brian.

Woohooo! 520! Be proud Thomas!

They stationed me indoors. Thank God, I thought I was going to sweat my butt off today.

.

Mind snaggin a video of that set up next time around? congrats on the 255...

I do em cross armed man. Front squats are all about staying upright. Just gotta constantly focus on keeping the elbows high and th upper back locked in tight.

Will do. I need to anyway to see why I roll forward coming out of the hole.

They'll get better in time, in sure.

My guess is you're sitting back too far. When I see people struggling with FS it's usually because it looks too much like their back squat.

This is probably true. My stance was very similar. I also go down as low as possible, but I've seen videos that say you should stop at parallel?

Stance will be narrower. Think straight down, straight up (i.e. more forward knee travel)). And I bottom out hamstrings on calves, but if you want to stop at parallel the world won't end. In general, the front squat will be the deepest of the three (low bar, high bar, front).
