Hi guys. I have just started a fitness regime, combined free weights and cardio with my new job where I am away from home for 2 months and nothing but a gym for entertainment. I have a training regime which I like and requires workout 2-3 times a week. I am taking zero supplements. I have been eating a primal diet so lots of meat, vegetables and eggs. My goals are originally to tone up and lose some body fat. I am currently 5ft10 83kg, not sure on bf but definitely more than I should.

Anyway my question relates to workout recovery - Even leaving 2 days between workouts I am finding it very difficult to train properly - muscle soreness and fatigue prevents me from doing anything worthwhile even though I am motivated in mind! I am working continuos 12 hour shifts for 2 months which does not help!

Would a supplement help me? Should I persevere without using any supplement? I like the idea of an all in one supplement / protein but worried about stacking on fat as I'm physically unable to train enough!

I look forward to your help!

Beta Alanine
BCAAs
Creatine

No worry for weight gain, great for recovery.

I feel creatine is the best way to start for a first supplement.

Otherwise PeakBeta+ should help with endurance and recovery and is on a great deal right now

Honestly man soreness is gonna happen when you first start working out. You can spend all the money in the world on supps and I promise you're still gonna be sore for awhile. All I can say is stick it out, because it will go away. I would say buy a good protein (I like Select protein by PES) and a multivitamin and call it a day.

cheers guys. I just need something to help slightly as its doing my head in 1 day training then 4-5 days later I can just about train again but can't give it my all. As I said previously I work continuous 12 hour nights which really do add to any fatigue!

You will be sore since you just started training. Even seasoned vets still get sore. That lets us know we trained hard. you just have to man up. For now all you need is a good diet, fish oil (for the heart and joints), protein powder if you cant get your daily requirment from food, and a preWO if you need motivation to wake up and go to the gym.

cheers for advice - I'm happy with soreness but just want to train more than once a week. Maybe I am expecting too much too soon....

I remember those days! Can't straighten your arms because it hurts so bad, chest is so sore it's hard to breath! Just work through it the best you can!

Focus on period workout nutrition. Pre, intra and post meals help a lot with my recovery. For a simple product, look into SNS Citrulline Malate. Helps with recovery and blood flow

What I advise for my clients who start out "to busy" (though you actually work 12 hrs) is a eggs and oats preWO, BCAA's during, and Mass Gainz shake postWO. Add in some creatine postWO and Beta Alanine and it should help you out with recovery. Recovery happens best during rest and food. So give your self a chance to rest. You may have to break your workout up into full body splits.

Good luck with your goals.

The first weeks are gonna be tough like was stated before. No way around that honesty.

As jigzz said peri workout nutrition well help tremendously with DOMS though. Lean meats and a mix of fast and slow digesting carbs around your workouts is a must.

Once you get over the initial hump of new muscle soreness BCAA products will help at this point if nutrition is order. Our BCAA/SAA is a great option since not only does it have BCAA's but also SAA's to further aid in recovery and decrease down time.

Did the 12 hour night shift for years, agreed, it sux. But you obviously want it or you would not be asking the questions. Stay motivated, are you using a good pre workout? Stretching everything out, after you get home? Just keep at it. Listen to these guys, they know what they are talking about. Be patient, keep going, and it will get easier. And them GAINZZZ!!!!

Sleep and a low stress life (making changes where changes are due) and proper nutrition are your first and foremost best recovery agent. Supplements are much less effective if these cornerstones of recovery are not adhered too. That being said, supplements can help lower stress / help with a more effective sleep. However, getting these in order without supplements should be done first.
