That deal is gonna backfire on the marlins so bad it's unreal, with his injury history and their inability to fill the seats they will be losing money
 
The fact that this guy makes the equivalent to the America average household income every day is disgusting IMO.

3 hour game, 4-5 AB's and sevaral fielding plays for $23,000/hr.

It is actually a pretty friendly contract for him. He is 23 or 24. He has an opt out at age 30, so in 6 or 7 years. The majority of the money is backloaded. Personally, if they do not surround him with other players, which is highly unlikely given their past, he will opt out. Thus saving them a lot of money. If it works out like that, the team looks good by making an effort to sign a good player to a long term deal. However, if they do not surround him with others, they really didn;t do their duty. This s all assuming he opts out, which would not be surprising if he can keep producing. A good team would sign him at 30 to a big contract.

Sports, the biggest racket in town. I think it is less about the fact that he is actually valuable to them as a team and in this situation and more about the money for what is gained from his services. For society he does nothing other than entertain and he makes more than people who are integral to thousands of companies staying afloat. All to play a game.

Then again have you seen eSports lately? Streaming on Twitch can make you six figures for playing video games.

I havent seen that but heard a couple jokes about seeing girls on twitch, more tongue in cheek stuff. ...but ya absolutely true from the perspective of wooing an audience. The Dodgers basically dug a hole in the wall unto themselves by doing the same with their TV contract exclusivity deal, until eventually they realized some concession had to be made. The corporations standing on the opposite side of the room saw the obvious price hike that showing the club would do to their business, when many did not ask/want to watch the games.

Sports are a racket in a nutshell. Take a look at the NBA for instance, game has totally devolved from a center oriented style, to one of guards yet you'll find regression and the fact that one, two traits are noteworthy, instantly hike up their salaries when eons ago they would really be backing up the bench, their now asking for starter money. Golf might be the most albatross example of a racket, in my book its not a sport but you'd be hard pressed to find the top 10 to earn less than the top stars from the other sports combined, its ridiculous.

Like it was said, most of the money is on the tail end. He is being compensated for his talents accordingly IMO.
The revenue and jobs and dreams he creates is worth it....

That contract wont be as bad in another couple years of record setting contracts. After the year of the reliever...we gonna see some more craziness.
