Slicin' and Dicin'

Happy birthday to your boy. Enjoy the bro sesh. I would just hit your OHP and spot him when he is benching. I know it’s not the same, but for some reason with programs like 5/3/1 when I try to switch up days it tends to throw me off in one area or another. Of course that could just be me and how obsessed I get on strength programs.🤷🏻‍♂️

Well deadlifts are out today. Gonna be moving stuff down the road back and forth all day. Slow and steady though, no reason to rush. We have plenty of time to have the factory up and running by Tuesday and the moving company actually starts this afternoon so the big benefit to doing some now is whatever I move, they don't charge for, and the sooner I get my office set back up the sooner I can get back to selling ****!

we have internet! yesterday around 10am-noon we started breaking down and by noon today the office is setup and rockin' and rollin'. of course in corporate America, today is basically as much as a holiday as Monday will be. so today will be unpacking, helping in the warehouse, and then I'll grab my boy for a bday BBQ tonight.

I got him tickets to the Layne Staley Tribute in August in Seattle. about 20 years ago when my buddies and I were all gigging in Seattle we used to follow around a group of guys called Jar of Flies which is likely the best AIC tribute band there is, and they are headlining this year. So I'm pretty stoked to give him his first concert tickets, the fact that he WANTS Alice in Chains, and the fact that he wants me to go with him.

That said, right now my deadlift day is not looking good. but it is what it is. we have crazy positive vibes at work. I was worried when we announced we were moving (have to move) that people would feel insecure. change can be hard on people. Instead, I see a massive positive vibe from everyone and a lot of people who were offered today off as a PTO day since we can't be manufacturing, showed up to help with the move because they want to be a part of it.

My boy is 17, my business just committed to a massive lease worth 1,136 times what our first lease was in 2002, my wife is leaving her job in pursuit of happiness and I'm filled with an incredible sense of happiness despite this whirlwind of chaos and change. All of this, undoubtedly, is the hand of God at work. Things just keep falling into place.

Yep, definitely sounds like the hand of God at work. Peace in the midst of chaos. That’s really cool you and your son are going to a concert together. I liked the Grunge music that came out of your area in the 90s. Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Alice In Chains all were good. Probably Nirvana and Pearl Jam were my favorites of that era.😎🤟

Been a busy weekend. Boy and I hauled about 6 yards of chips and bark this morning before lifting. Yesterday all farm work, installed new solar fan in greenhouse, butchered 3 chickens, then banana ball last night.

The racks were packed so I just went old school with my OHP reps today, everything cleaned from the ground, put back down gently. I thought that would cause me to miss my target but nope!

My boy benched a clean 255 while I was pressing but missed his 275 which left him grumpy, so he blamed it on the yard work

That’s awesome that he benched 255….yep I agree, that yard work cost him 20 lbs.😤😖😂

Sorta same story. Woke up early to hit home Depot with the wife, then off to hit my pulls, now headed back home for some plant work. Gotta repot a bunch of tomatoes and stuff. Abbreviated workout but went with a deficit on the BBB to spice it up.

Yes I had 10 x 345 but I didn't see a reason to redline the tach while I'm making progress.....

Training isn’t about murdering one day after all; it’s about trying to make progress on all of them (or often as you can) for as long as you can.

Can you add a link to the solar fan?

Awesome looking weekend and nice bench for your boy💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻

Can you add a link to the solar fan?

yes sir; https://*******/4fDL2NB

I went with the 10" and glad I did, I def would not go any smaller. I might add another one. this fan is installed on the south side of the greenhouse, and I might put another on the northside to pull air in and contribute to the overall flow. so far though it does seem to be making a pretty decent contribution to airflow in the greenhouse despite being crazy quiet.

Weighed in at 194, decent session with my normal lifting buddy.
RX for today was 7 x 250 (8 to PR the cycle) and again, no microplates available so I had to either go up to 255 or down to 245. its going to get to where 10lb jumps are just dumb on a weekly basis so I'm going to order plates to keep in the gym bag today.

I also like that my OHP day schedules shoulder/delt accessories so on a bench day I can give triceps some extra work.

my boy just texted me a video of him absolutely crushing a 405lb squat ass to grass today, 6 days after turning 17. If he wants it, the high school record will be his for the taking next year.

What’s his school’s weight room record?

What’s his school’s weight room record?
I'll have him verify again, but I think it was 450, and maybe 425 at the lower weight class. He's in at about 230 right now (although wrestled at 215 varsity so he told me this weekend "yeah I don't want to get any heavier").

I've heard rumors from other dads of different numbers but the numbers my boys tells me are from what he's seen posted on the walls at the school before he understood their gravity so when he tells me a record is 450, I take it more seriously than when a 65yr old dad tells me about when their kid set the record 25 years ago at 540 lol. (since we all went to the same high school, especially).

my strength was never "strength" (ha) so back in the day the pull-up record was like 24 so I did 27 one year. My mom probably held the most legitimate record (she, myself, and my son all same high school) in swimming. I believe breast stroke and freestyle. her name was still up at the high school pool when I went to school.

450 sounds pretty plausible as something you’d see commonly. 540 is definitely trained powerlifting in highschool, which isn’t particularly common (but definitely does & is possible),

It is absolutely crazy the stuff people try to claim about back in their day, for no reason. My barber tried to tell me that of course he doesn’t lift weights like me, but back when he was in highschool he squat “4, 500 pounds” with no further detail.

So which was it? Because if you had even done 400, you’d understand how different 500 is in the squat 😆 Like bro, you are a wizard in your profession: you don’t have to lie to impress me in areas you never specialized in.

Lol it's true. My buddy always tells me about his 1600lb leg press back in the day but refuses to go to the gym with me

My boy just clarified. The school records are 465 in his weight class and 480 overall....

Been preparing for this session for a week mentally and my boys PR definitely fed my fire last night. He's gonna pass dad on all lifts before long but I have to keep pushing to make sure I don't just hand him the victory.

One thing I'm liking about keeping BBB over jokers sets like I used to do is I think I'm recovering way better but getting quality practice in on the ROM. Idk if that practice is as important on bench for me, but deadlifts and possibly squats it certainly is. I can tell how my ROM can shift especially on deadlifts when I'm out of practice or stiff.

Been eating my own chicken all week long since I butchered three more last weekend and I gotta say it's crazy how satiating it is. I've researched this before but it's still sorta wild and eye opening to me.

Time to reload the anavar and crank it up 🤣 can’t let him take you yet

That is pretty cool info on the chicken. It all makes sense if you take time to consider it.

I know we joke like him passing you would be some sort of issue, but I bet you can't wait and the pride that will fill you when he does will probably be as good as any PR you have made yourself.

Nice work…. BBB is probably my favorite with 5/3/1 as well. Of course I love to customize for my needs, but for me it seems to have the right balance between hypertrophy and recovery.
That’s very cool information on the chicken. And there’s no doubt that home grown fruits and vegetables, and home raised meat is way better and healthier.👍

Oh for sure, but I really want him to earn that milestone too. in some ways lifting is coming way too easily for him, he has size on me, and youth/testosterone, but I want him to have to earn it, and i want to know that he develops the drive to get in there and do the work even when he doesn't feel like it if that makes sense.

Yeah its sorta wild, I hadn't even really thought about the nutritional impact of home grown food until I realized how much fuller I feel after eating our chickens. I've always thought home grown fruits and veggies tasted better, but aside from a lack of pesticides etc, I didn't think about their nutritional differences until you just pointed it out..

The conclusion I came to this week was that if we could replace 1% of our food this way, then thats an improvement, and maybe down the road we could get to 2%... and so on....

Yeah, I think most commercial chicken says it has about 20-25% saline injection which is definitely going to lower the nutrient density.

Spent yesterday running three more yards of material, two bark, one soil for garden beds. Mowing, almost got my chicken brooder done, she's a big girl. Gonna finish that today.

Throwing two of our Cornish cross birds on the grill today as well, one spatchcock and one beer can. Early Sunday morning session for me, about 8am, cause I gotta race home to get back to work on the brooder, raised beds, etc before we can switch gears to meal prep and dinner bbq.

RX on BBB was 85 but again, seemed pointless that light.

Goal was 6 x 160 on the AMRAP set to PR current cycle. I'm pretty sure 6 at 160 is a reps PR technically. I likely never tried more than 5 though.

I went narrower grip, wrapped thumbs, proper comp style OHP for all working sets and suicide on BBB.

Congrats on the PR…. I’m like you on the early stages of 5/3/1 feeling light, but then I remind myself it’s designed to progress not only to build muscle strength, but joints and connective tissue as well, which should lead and theoretically help reach and sustain our goals hopefully quicker, without injury.

Today is ironically I think my past day of this cycle before programmed deload, a word I haven't had to use in a while yet I'm sorta looking forward to it! Lol

Def had 8 to 10 reps in me if my life depended on it. I wasn't sure how today would go cause I was feeling exhausted walking in but by rep 5 I knew I had to decide between "yes, that's progress" and "is one more rep worth an injury".

I feel pretty good about this. Haven't really done hard higher rep pull stuff like this in a while. Beating my current programming despite myself feels good.

Also my boy got me hooked on the new Shinedown Album. It's pretty good!

Weight has been 193-195 so my vacation weight has moved in semi permanently. That's my fault, nutrition has been sloppy. 80/20, sure. But the 20 has been really enjoyed

haha yeah its been a lot of the little stuff slipping in. Had my first golf game of the year with the guys Friday, I had a beer. just one, but a big IPA so there's a bunch of bloat and wasted calories, then date with the wife, Sunday we had people over to beer can two of my cornish cross chickens I harvested, which is again, fine, but then we had the sides, chili, brownie with ice cream, etc so the small 20% has added up fast. Wife and I got the train back on the tracks this week though.

After yesterdays pulls, this is my first deload week in a very long time. probably years tbh since my system has been sorta self regulating with travel etc. so it will be interesting...

You know what, that’s gonna be my new diet. Rotisserie chicken and a couple protein shakes every day, but on the weekends I add a bunch of pastries on top 😂

80% self-raised chickens; 20% iced Honey Buns 🍯
haha yeah pretty much. My last batch of chickens I plucked rather than skinned and I think these two we ran on the komodo joe grill beer can style are by far the best tasting yet. its basically my meal prep for the rest of the week.

Living the good life 😂

Funny thing is, this is pretty repeatable and manageable for maintenance in reality. for years thats really what I did. very clean Sunday night through Friday, allowing Friday and Sat night as splurges. it seems to be maintainable now too, except I should have cut 10 more lbs before sinking into this level of maintenance lol.

You've got this. Man the more I look at the training the more I wonder if I could manage this since the work sets would not get me anywhere near failure until the AMRAP set, at least in the beginning. I feel like I could do well and less likely to get tired and mess up if I kept the reps down. I may try to test the waters on a few things over the next couple of weeks to see if reasonable lower rep efforts cause any issue or not. Seems as things got heavier I could figure things out, or just make a change. I mean I have been thinking strength training with in reason is probably going to strengthen things more quickly. I would just have to start with a low working max and play with things a bit.

I've been getting PTSD remembering when I ran 531 hard pre-covid, like 2016-2018. Looking at the programming and realizing I had to hit like 13 reps at 385 to keep progressing, lol. Its a double edged sword I think. It's very organized, you're not wasting time spinning wheels on junk volume, but I know I have to make that AMRAP really count...

So I'm about a month into this cycle and aside from needing a little cardio, I do not feel like a slacker right now, my overall volume is likely down considerably from my norm, but my top end intensity is up and my recovery is pretty good!

Deload programming seemed a bit off so I just went 2x5 on everything. Not trying to set PRs here anyways.

For accessories just touched a bit of everything chest/tri, no AMRAP, no failure. Just ROM.

The other upside to deloads is I basically deload adrenal system too, no preWO, lower caffeine intake etc.
