Slicin' and Dicin'

I was born in 1964, so technically that was the last year of Baby Boomers, but I guess I’ve always been more like a Gen X Boomer. With that said, I do believe I grew up with the best music. And I’m the youngest of 9 kids, so oh yeah my Mom and Dad contributed to the Baby Boomers…ha, and my Uncle, on my Dad’s side, had 14 kids.😂
And man that’s great Dustin that your boy is in Wrestling. I played football and wrestled as well, and wrestling will definitely get you in shape quicker than any other high school sport. I had gotten my black belt in Kenpo before I started wrestling, but wrestling and learning how to grapple and gain leverage while on the ground made me much more well rounded. And actually some of the best MMA fighters have a wrestling background. They learned high intensity training and how to push themselves in wrestling, and the grappling techniques all transition really well to MMA. Ha, you’ll have to overlook the bouncing between subjects and rambling, us Boomers tend to do that sometimes.😂

you know whats funny is my parents are boomers but my dads little brother (RIP) was a gen X and its sorta funny even though they grew up practically best friends (and army brats) you could really see the small generational gap. I'd say the biggest things that have always connected us all though were sports (baseball for sure, then football) and music. My wife and I always say music peaked in the 90s. but I'd say in general music probably started in the 1950s, carried through till the 90s. I still give the Beatles a lot of credit for being firsts in multiple genres of rock and roll (like Helter Skelter, in my opinion was punk rock a year after Kurt Cobain was born)

I think that most people think that music peaked in their era. I remember BigT trashing on anything beyond the 70's and saying the 60-70s were the greatest music. I think it is just whatever you associate to a better happier and less stressful time in our lives that music can bring back for us temporarily. However, I can absolutely say there is plenty of new music as good and even better now, but it doesn't have our youth attached to it to give it more gravity. I have been very eclectic in taste all of my life and have almost always just morphed with whatever was new that I liked. I was into classic rock from my parents when I was young, but I stopped actively listening to most of the stuff I used listen to all the time. Only recently have I been getting nostalgic for the older music. Although it has more to do with the memories or the feeling it brings back to me from that timeframe.

One thing I will say, is that I really love the new AI music, well the AI covers of music in completely different styles. Some of the RAP I have heard done in 50 style soul, or hard rock in Dark Country or RAP. Just so many ways to experience the same song having that familiarity, but also it being completely different vibes. I love it because so many times i have thought to myself I wonder what this song would have sounded like with todays technology and a way to add a solid bass line in.

Here's two tests I like to apply:

a. sticking power... top 10 songs from the 60s to the 90s are a lot more palatable across generations than top 10 songs from the last 20 years, every once in a while you hear a hit from like 2003 and you're like holy cow that was bad, lol.

b. what are the kids listening to... obviously modern music is still making money but the majority of the gen z kids I know are all listening to 60s-90s stuff 😂 😂 my boys playlist never ceases to amaze me. I'm like damn kid, you figured it out. always a mix of Led Zeplin > Alice in Chains.

You squeezed every last drop out of the chesticles 😂

definitely tried to, they started piping in some of that free floating testosterone right as we were leaving so it was tempting to hang and throw down some back extensions, or at least study how those and RDLs are supposed to be done via observational learning.

Yeah, I think the sticking power is also very subjective to when you were born. Of course there are some greats that were truly classic and will be timeless. However I challenge you to find any period that doesn't have these kind of songs for the group that listens to them.

I think most people end up loving the music they grew up on which is normally a mix of what their parents listened to, and what there friends listened to. Your kid is now listening to things that used to not interest him as much but that you exposed him to and it will always be a part of who he is. That is the staying power. To have an emotion, or feeling that connects you to the music IMHO.

I have to be honest since i frequently am around the Gen Z crowd while they seem to prefer classic rock band t-shirts most of them don't even know any of the songs by the groups. I have asked several of Sage's friends, Oh you like (insert group name on their shirt here", what is your favorite song? CRICKETS! A couple of them were just honest and said I don't know I don't listen to them, the shirt is just cool. My daughter now listens to all the old music we did when she was growing up, along with all of her new stuff. She does not listen to 60-70's classic tock because I never listened to that around her. She is a "now classic" alternative rock, rap, and techno girl. So I can definitely see it both ways.

Now to be fair, I have no clue what is on the radio any more. So i have zero idea of what is coming out mainstream. I tend to listen to tons of smaller youtube artists, and people who do not get any play on the radio. I feel a lot of the best music coming out recently is to be found is out on youtube, or music streaming platforms, not on a radio. That is the cookie cutter BS for the most part. I swear most of my playlists are full of artists that I have never heard on the radio, or only heard a couple of songs that got released on radio.

There are some crazy multi-talented people out there now that can do so much and blend so many styles together. Just a lot of good creation. Now the good people are mostly independent, but have a lot of followers, but no songs on the radio. Youtube has really changed the game on where to find new artists IMHO.

its crazy how often this happens but walked into the gym telling my buddy "I'm not sure what I have in me today, feeling a bit worn out" and now I feel great an hour later. WODs are like that too. I'm like IDK.... set the timer, go, walk out feeling like a lion on the prowl.

man both of these things are so true. I'm not sure i've listened to FM radio in my car in the last 2 years even once it gets harder and harder to keep up with it because its hard to find new stuff when I let the algo stream. a long time ago I switched to youtube music and I splurged on the monthly membership. I had pandora, have tried spotify (now only for podcasts) and youtube music is still my favorite. but there was a time when I was playing drums and gigging that I had subscriptions to magazines like Blender and I was all about finding the new stuff but I've been disillusioned by new stuff for so many years.

but that said, I know so many talented musicians. the pie in the sky dream (win the lottery type situation) that my wife and I have is to open a legit rock club in Tacoma. "Make Rock Great Again". I hate to admit that I like musicals, but Rock of Ages just hits right. (so does The Dirt though). Remember the Bourbon Room in Rock of Ages? I'd love to have a club like that, about half size.

Danny Koker built Vamp'd in Vegas which unfortunately just closed but that was a perfect smallish rock club!

Yeah I agree with you on the music you like the most is what you grew up on. I have a wide range of what I like as well, and do like some of the new music, and independent YouTube music as well. It’s so great to be able to listen to almost anything you want now. The funny thing about the classic rock I grew up with is some of the music I like now from that era I really didn’t listen to back then, but now I like it. All my sons and my oldest grandson likes the old classics as well. So just like you said I influenced them with music, sports, and MMA. And I really do like a lot of the 90s music as well Dustin.
You brought up Danny Koker…I love his car building show Count’s Kustoms, and I didn’t know his rock club closed.

Now, I do want to be clear, I am in no way poopooing classic rock, or the 90's music. Some of my favorite music off all time is from then. However so is some of it from the 80's 2000's 2010's and now the 2020's.

This guy Ren who is independent is SUPER Talented, he can do any kind of music, and he does it all well. He is super eclectic. One of the best singers, rappers, guitarist, and entertainers doing it right now. Here is the song / video that introduced me to him, and i had to go down the rabbit hole after that. Some of it is folk, some soul, some rap, some rock, some reggea, dude has been Busking for years. He does these videos live, and in one shot. So he is literally that good. This one is an entire trip, if you should check it out even if you don't go down the rabbit hole this one is an EPIC song and performance!!!

As a matter of fact, I am going to watch it now!

I forgot when I was replying to you guys yesterday I had a thought.
When I was like 10 I had this little blue orb clock radio set to 97.3 KBSG, Todays Oldies (I can still hear the DJ, lol) and I'd fall asleep to that. meanwhile my 20-30yr old parents were listening to 80s rock, mom would blast Pat Benetar in her 66 Mustang, dad would be running Bruce Springsteen records, then in highschool obviously I grew up on grunge, and developed a love for hard rock, but at that point I had to "discover" the 70s rock sorta on my own since my childhood sorta skipped from the 60s (radio) to the 80s (mom and dad) and then the 90s (teen years) 😂 😂

DUDE!

somehow about 20 years ago I was driving to work and landed on the JAZZ station. this song caught my attention and I was like that's dope! the DJ goes "that was Obsession Confession, by Slash". I had no idea SLASH had done anything like this.

do you remember when Santana did that big collab record (CD) like 20+ years ago or something?

I gotta admit that was a cool way of bringing old school into more modern times at the time.

I've been loving a lot of the modern covers lately too. I posted that Phil Collins cover earlier, there are a ton of hard rock versions of In the Air Tonight that are pretty badass....

Oh yeah, Slash is an excellent classic guitarist. I think he went to Juliard or something if I remember correctly.

I for sure owned this album, and it is an all the way through listen. Great Album!!!

That’s the good thing with working arms when you’re tight on time. You can get a decent workout in and get a good pump without taking too much time, especially throwing in a couple of supersets in like you did. I bet you had a good pump when you picked your boy up for breakfast.💪😎

I was shocked lol it was a great pump in a very short session.

My boy is down 12lbs so far between waterpolo and wrestling

6 more and he's gonna be in a lower weight class. Wrestling is beating the hell out of him, I'm crazy impressed by his fortitude. It's a hard sport!

So that's like 16min work, 22 min tabata including the rests + LISS so 32 min for the night? No wonder I was shredded back then, this stuff is intense

My volume may not have been up to snuff but that was wild.

Wanted to see if I had improved at all from last effort. My double unders are coming back fast. Threw down a quick 50 unbroken to warmup before I started the timer.

For comparison after taking about 3 years off I was stumbling and tripping and whipping myself like a very bad boy the last couple weeks getting the rhythm back

Yeah wrestling will be great for him, conditioning wise and helping him with even more functional strength.

Kleen was talking about Tabata in Smont’s boxing log. It’s great for athletic conditioning.

Also miserable so it must be effective

with a timer going on tabata mode you're crushing 16-20 minutes of sprints in a way that seems way less miserable than the treadmill, but finishes way worse. So I kinda love it. Anything that tricks me into throwing up and rolling around in a pile of my own gross is good.

In other news my wife just poked my bicep and said "it's big". So I got that going for me.

We closed up shop early for the holiday so I snagged some accessories / curls for girls on the way home. Bi's for wives.

Took Lzzy for a run/walk this morning to try to wear her out some before guests arrive, but that's about the best I got time for today. Smoking a 14lh bird, my with is doing one in the oven, and for some reason a third is going in the grill spatchcock style ....

Star trac leg press

Notes
Thanksgiving was good but exhausting. Sorta had to force myself into this one so opted for a kinda prehab session on acct of everything hurt lol.

Like always, once I got moving ended up going heavier than planned, lol.

Plus there were a couple places I wanted to hit for black Friday in Tacoma so if figured if I hit the gym around 9, they don't open till 11, the workout is self programmed

Leg press before squats is my new favorite thing.

Wow, you're the second AM member who cooked up 3 turkeys for Thanksgiving! We just did one big one, but also served salmon and the rest of the sides. Where do you find the space for 3 turkeys?!

My wife learned a lesson in leftovers lol.
We did one traditional in the oven, that was her responsibility.

I always smoke one on the Kamado joe, and the last one which I think was the worst one, was spatchcock on the propane grill.

Seems like people are really big on spatchcock birds lately but I've done two now and I'm not impressed, I prefer full bird (chicken or turkey) on the KJ....

12 x 295

Notes
Just a brief control-the-holiday-damage session

The matrix Pec deck with the grips is so much easier than the padded type by life fitness and other brands. I just threw 295 on to see what the full stack felt like and it was just silly.

I bet you got a really good stretch in those titties with that. 😜

Fasted cardio
40min incline LISS

Running my normal 36hr fast today.
Woke up at 199 post holiday which is pretty much where I have been the last three Monday mornings so thanksgiving didn't do any more damage than a normal weekend for me

Leg press
15 x +90, +180
10 x +270, +360

Squats
5 x 95, 135
1 x 185, 225, 265, 295
3 x 305 (A2G)
1 x 315

Glute machine
2 x 15

SS with calf ext
2 x 25

Adductor machine
2 x 20

SS with abductor machine
2 x 20

Notes
Last weekend took 295 for a set and wanted to go up from there. Pretty sure I had 5 at 305 but I wanted my last rep to be absolutely buried more than I wanted the other two.

Why do you do leg press before squat now?

Why do you do leg press before squat now?

It happened by default a couple times when the squat racks were packed full of people and I was trying to make good use of my time that I had, and I realized that it was a seemingly lower impact warmup that was getting my neurons firing and abductors warm. Squatting is typically slow and painful for me until I hit 225lbs. then the pain goes away, but the amount of warming up I do under the barbell I think has a negative effect on my top end work. Whereas I can take the leg press to max weight, even to failure, and seemingly not have a negative.

I mean we did cut it short today at only 360, but when I tossed 95lbs on my back I was practically doing jumping squats with no pain and really fantastic speed. I'm a slow mover by nature, always have been. I'm sure there will be a point of diminishing returns but right now I'm getting under the barbell feeling much stronger, warmer, and ready to go than usual.

The two other things that I think are making good contributions right now are that single leg glute machine and the abductor/adductor machines. I think abductor with a 'b' is the one that helps you squeeze your enemies skull between your thighs right? I used to have to do sets of 20+ at 70lbs to get those things to not feel like I was ripping my balls off. today I was squeezing 235lbs on a 250lb stack. I probably could run the full stack at sets of 10-20 now I think. so I'm definitely improving in areas I previously neglected horribly.

under very heavy weight I used to pancake badly on squats and would struggle to get my hips low. I translated this possibly as core strength issues, posterior, whatever, and did more back extensions, RDL's, hamstring work. this past year I've done more quad work and abductor/adductor with the direct glute and sitting deep in the hole with a very nice spine position at 305/315 was very comfortable for me.

obv not super impressive numbers and still far below my PR but I'm happy to be showing what I believe is great form there right now without following a specific training program.

PM session

Warmup
10min incline LISS
Hang power cleans
5 x bar, 95, 115, 135
Double Unders x 15

WOD: (3...2...1....)

15 double unders
10 hang power cleans 135lb
5 burpees
10 RFT
Time:22:29

I wanted a 15+ min WOD but I still wanted to beat 20

Smoked. Either 5 cleans or 95 lbs would have been more appropriate
I'm just quoting an old post to bring it to the front so I can find it later in case I decide to throw down.
10 hang cleans what was I thinking.

Warmup
10 min incline LISS at 12 grade

WOD....
15 double unders
10 x 135lb hang power cleans (sigh)
5 burpees

Time 19.20
So beat the old time by a few minutes

I set a goal of 2 min per round to keep a slower upfront pace that would still beat my last time.

Keep going Dustin, and you’ll be able to join the crush a watermelon with your thighs club.

Makes you wonder if her husband gets a little nervous every time he gets between her thighs.😜

Wonder does that thing have the manage?
I don't think so, I think they're a little over healthy.

so last night I had this guy

then around 9:30pm a barking dog woke me up. so I went out and it was the big yote sitting right behind my shed barking his ass off driving me nuts. couldn't sleep through it. then he started howling, which honestly is a much preferred sound to me.

then just now, I had logged into my cameras to grab the pic of the buck from last night for you and this guy is in my yard this morning lol

both appear to be forks, maybe a 3x3 but definitely different bucks

FWIW, Sebastian Oreb (the Australian Strength Coach, coaches Hafthor Bjornson and Rhyss Keane and very good powerlifter himself) is big on warming up on Legpress before squats. Light, high rep, maximal ROM and knee travel to get everything loosened up and warm in the lower body.

I found that when I played with that or the Hacksquat same way, you definitely feel much better by the time you get under the bar. I’ve been doing some Bulgarians prior to squatting at the end of my mobility/activation and that’s doing the trick as well with minimal investment. But just something for the legs with a deep ROM prior does help.
