Silly question, but humor me

So I was working out this morning and for he first time ever some guy complained to me about my BO... Now, is it just me or is that a f@cking stupid thing to complain about when the whole damn purpose of going to a gym is to work out, which inevitably leads to sweating and smelling not too fresh?

Am I being too sensitive or was that guy just being a douche? What really made me feel like it was out of line was that it was one of the staff member there and I thought that was terribly inapropriate the whole way he went about it, telling me "we have a slight problem here" and "maybe you should shower before coming to the gym and use extra deoderant". Keep in mind that I had a towel with me, which I lay on whenever I use a bench and I wipe down everything after I finishe using it.

Quite honestly had he not been a staff-member I would have told him to go f@ck himself, but gyms here in Cyprus are ridiculously expenisve and I still have 4 months left on my contract with them worth almost $400...

I'm seriously contemplating about asking to talk to the supervisor and making an official complaint against that guy for being incredibly rude and discourteous to a customer for something so stupid.

What do you think? Am I over-reacting?

was this in a public or private setting. If he said something like that infront of the whole gym, than he is def out of line. If he took you aside and nicely said do something about you bo than just take it on thr cheek and rub on some extra do bedore the gym

Yeah if he said something like that in public thats just ridiculous. The fact that he was a staff member In my opinion makes it worse not better

If it was a staff member that said it, then chances are it was because of complaints from other customers. In that case, you may need to just layer on and extra serving of sports stick.

This. And echoing the thoughts about where he said it and in front of whom, if anyone. It sounds like the way he said it may have been inappropriate (by saying "we may have a problem" instead of just coming right out with it, but a lot of people aren't comfortable in potentially confrontational situations).

If he came up to you, chances are other members did in fact say something, so he had to. I don't necessarily smell good at the gym, but I know I don't reak of B.O., either (unlike some people I've come across). Now I don't say anything, because I figure I'm there for a short time and then it's over, but I'll admit that if I encountered someone on a daily basis, I'd probably just say something to them (in private, of course). There's a difference between all out B.O. and just being sweaty.

But that's the whole thing, apart from me and him, there wer maybe another 4 people in the gym at the time, none of which where anywhere near me. I'm not lying here, he was at the other end of the weights room, next to the reception desk and he just came up to me out of nowhere!

I'd been working out for about an hour and the gym was literally empty when I got there at 6.30, I was working out alone entirely till about 7.15 and then about 15 minutes later when 3-4 people had arrived and all gone upstaits to use the cardio equipment he comes out of nowhere and lays this on me...

I mean come on, there's no way on earth my bo was covering a 60-70ft radius, that's just absurd. Besides, just as I was finishing up a mate of mine walked in to work out and we chatted for 5-6 minutes and he didn't say anything, and he definitely know me well enough to be comfrotbale telling me "jeez man, you reek!".

I know for a fact no one other customer complained, no one else was there! So either this guy just felt bored and was f@cking with me or he's just an ass-hole.

What I ought to tell him is that I may reek, but he's ugly as f@ck, and that can't be cured by a shower.

Maybe its because I literally coem from the Ghetto and fighting was a way to establish order, but me personally i would have checked his @$$

Oh trust me I was tempted! I'm not big by any standards but I genuinely believe I would have handed this guy his ass in a fight.

Hmm I can't say I'd want the job of going around to weight lifters as telling them they stink lolol funny enough tho when I was at the gym today this old guy smelled really bad like a deadly combo of sweat and old man smell it was nasty

Obviously when people work out they sweat, and that can lead to bad bo, but I mean come on, let's use some common sense here, who the hell goes to the gym all purfumed up as if they 're going to prom?

Before I go to the gym I just use my standard deoderant spray, throw on a clean t-shirt and that's it. Unless I've been sweating like a pig immediately prior to going to the gym I don't see the reason to shower, I'm not going there to socialise, I'm going there to work out!

Imagine if someone told you off for playing soccer/football and turning up in wrinkled t-shirt? What the hell?? It's going to get all sweaty and grass stains on it, why would you bother to iron something that's literally minutes away from needing another wash anyway?

Seriously, some people are just f@cking prissy little girls...

Just shower use a deodorant stick not spray & you're good, unless you own the gym be courteous of others, you're kinda being prissy little girl by complaining about it here too lol...

Here is my standing on this, if I can smell myself then ok maybe i should spray some extra, but if i can genuinely not smell myself and someone complains, theyre the prissy girls

It's as simple as this, if you didn't smell why would someone complain? Using a stick deo will help way more than a spray on deo. You could also ask people that you are close to if they think you have BO problems to see if the guy at the gym was just being a dick.

but if i can genuinely not smell myself and someone complains, theyre the prissy girls

Thank you! Besides, even if I do shower and use an entire can of deoderant on me, what guarantee is there that I won't sweat up my clothes and be just as bad as before?

If anything it speaks far more about the lack of sufficient ventilation in the gym than anything else.

I'm definitely going to make a complaint about him, the fact that I've trained during times when he's on duty and I have to avoid using multiple benches and other equipment because people are freely working out and sweating all over them wthout a towel and he's nowhere to be seen nor heard handing out reprimands while he comes up to me about not wearing perfume when I'm working out by myself in an empty gym is just ridiculous on his behalf.

It's as simple as this, if you didn't smell why would someone complain?

But that's just it, on one compalined, I was in the weight room ALONE. The only guy even on the same floor as me was this guy who has literally a good 60ft away, so how the hell can anyone have complained? That's why I'm so pissed off, it just doesn't make any sense, the guy was being a complete dick for no reason and I do hope he gets fired for it, there's absolutely no excuse for his behaviour.

No, I personally can't stand when people smell horribly, and there's not much excuse even when you're working out. I put on deodorant and sometimes axe, and I sweat like a waterfall when I work out but at least I don't smell.

To me personally, somebody being right next to me and having horrible bo actually impacts my work out cause I can't concentrate as I'm trying not to gag.

I come up against bo everyday as I work out in a gym that is 70% indians and if it's not a curry smell then it's completely bad bo.

Just use extra deodorant and you'll be fine.

A little stink that you can smell in your personal space when you lift your own arm and place your nose in that direction is totally normal towards the end of your gym session, and the people around you aren't going to smell that. However, make sure you don't invade peoples space with your stench at the gym. I shouldn't be having to inhale deep breaths of your body odor from a bench over. Many people find an unpleasant smell just as rude as a hurtful comment.

There's a strong chance if he actually spoke to you about it that complaints happened on more than one occasion. That said, maybe no one complained on the day you were spoken to, but the employee saw it as an opportunity to speak to you in front of less of a crowd, thus not being as much of a dick as saying it in front of 25 people.

I'll agree with the couple people in here who have said the gym isn't an excuse to smell terrible, though. I can sweat a lot, as well, but as long as I put on deodorant I've never had an issue. Also, you often cannot smell yourself the same way others do.

But seriously talking about it like you're going to fight the guy for doing his job is childish. Being a dick and/or hitting him will only get you kicked out of the gym and possibly arrested if you actually were to touch him. Since you said gyms are so expensive around there, I'd just suck it up, put on more deodorant and deal with it. Or if it bothers you that much, eat the money you've already been locked in for and go somewhere else (not something I'd do).

GIven how I've been working out in gyms in 4 different countries over the past 7 years and NO ONE has EVER complained about my bo, I find it almost impossible to believe that suddenly, from day to the next, I developed such a problem, and to such an extreme degree that someone 60ft away would be so overwhelmingly bothered by it he'd complain to me about it.

I've worked out in groups, with other people, spotting and being spotted and not once has anyone even hinted at this, so unless every human being I 've ever been in contact with has not only not told me about this but also managed to deal with it on multiple occassions for sometimes over an hour each time doesn't make me to eager to believe it.

However, had this been the case, there are a ton of better ways to tell a client/customer this. Would it have really been that difficult for him to say something along the lines of "you must really work out hard, you always sweat a lot and must need an immediate shower"... That would have been both tactful and direct enough without being down right rude.

Anyway, I called up earlier, asked to speak to the manager, told him exactly what happened and I'm going in nlater today to have a face-to-face talk with the guy and the manager. I'm actually very curious to see what they 're going to say.

BO is dependent on your diet. So just because you didn't smell before in other situations doesn't mean that this particular day you didn't exhude a particularly strong odor.

And you're taking it too personally, just put more deodorant on and don't worry about it.

Of course I'm taking it personally, some complete stranger came up to me in a place I PAY to work out in and was rude and insulting.

My diet is virtually the same over the greater amount of the time I started working out at 19. Besides, I've been working out at this gym for over 2 months now, in which time my diet hasn't changed one bit since I've been on a regiment since late May/early June, and even though I've worked out with 3-4 different people on different occassion and no one has said anything, these past 2 weeks I've been going early in the morning at 6.30am and I'm almost always there alone int eh weight room, so again, 0 chance of someone making repeated complaints.

Just double up on the old spice, if someone who worked there had to tell you that you smelled terrible, then you probably did, and people most likely complained at some point...i think you are over reacting to being told, and under reacting to the cause.

1. Clean clothes - always use lots of fabric softener
2. Right guard Total defense - (Power stripe) 48hrs protection - Antiperspirant kind is a must *
3. Febreze or Axe spray on clothing, towels, etc. - febreze lasts longer tho.

Don't matter if you eat tons garlic, onions, curry, etc.. you're masked.

Might something your ratting alot of. I put slot cooked onion on food sometimes my arm pits get smelly for a couple days after ratting to many onions.

I will agree the guy could have put it skittle better. He should have told you there were complaints, not take shower or we have problem.

having worked out at many gyms, worked at several, and owned one, i will tell you that the conversation he had with you was one of the most difficult ones to have with a member. he didn't think this up himself. another member, or members, came to him or his supervisor and complained. he put off talking to you as long as he could, i promise you.

yes, gyms are sweaty, smelly places, and i have no way to know what you actually smelled like. it is incredibly unlikely that that lowly gym employee took it upon himself to harass you unnecessarily, though. he was pushed, kicking and screaming, right up to you and then everybody ran away to watch the carnage from a hidden vantage point behind the leg press machine.

give him a break, and take stock of your situation. if they are just wrong, then shrug it off. if they might have a point, then be cool and do something about it. then, feel free to say something about the guy on the flat bench whose balls are hanging out of his super-short shorts.

it's all about the training; everybody just wants to be comfortable and do their thing. nothing personal.

Well, just got back from speaking with the manager and the guy's been fired. Apparently I'm not the first one to make a complaint about him, infact several others have, and interestingly enough, the motive behind it was actually plain old bigotted racism.

In Cyprus there exist many Cypriots who just plain hate Greeks, they blame us for the 1974 invasion of Turkish troops which annexed about 35% of the island in the north and lead to the massacre of thousands of civillians. This guy was one of them, and in his short tenure of 3 months at the gym he's been rude, obnoxious and discourteous to every single Greek person he's been in contact with.

I can't say I'm surprised the guy just made up some bull**** reason to offend me because I know damn well it's not only physically impossible to smell a human being from 60ft away unless he's on flames, but I also still have the shirt I wore in my hamper (it was yesterday morning and I haven't done any laundry yet) and trust me when i tell you the damn thing barely even smells of sweat, much less bad bo, and even then you ahve to hold it right up to your damn nostrils and take a deep breath.

I guess I wasn't being sensitive after all. I'm glad I took offense to it and I'm exceptionally glad that racist piece of **** got fired and quite frankly if I do run in to him (that little ***** wasn't even man enough to face me), I won't think twice about smacking him in the mouth.

Interesting topic with lots of angles.
The thing for me is, even if he did say it in front of everyone, the smell.was obviously bad enough for everyone to smell it, so its not like there were any secrets.
I get pretty distracted at the gym when someone's odor is that present. Yes people sweat in the gym but.BO takes a bit to develop.
If you're coming in sweaty and.stinky from a long day of work, shower first. If you sweat a lot at night and.lift in the morning, shower first. If you just stink for no reason, wear more deodorant.

Whoa just read the last post. You just got someone fired because.you have BO? Damnnnnnnn.......

WOW. i guess there's that angle, then, too.

I always find racist jokes / prejudice jokes to be entertaining in all fun and to everyone and what not. But I'll never understand what goes through someones mind who actually feels these things. I look at a person and see a person

Another thought...If you are so disturbed by some else's smell your probably not concentrating enough on your workout or you are way too close to that person. I am by no means a stinky monkey by I have encountered people that smell up close but not people that smell while im benching or doing my squats

Wow! That sure wasn't what I was expecting to hear. You did the right the thing and if you see that guy on the streets you won't have to be afraid of loosing your gym membership ;)

But...you still are going to clog everyone's noses? Lol.
The problem is only half way solved here.
There were obviously complaints and that's why he addressed it.
So now everyone has to pay their memberships still and put up with overwhelming BO until someone else complains?

I disagree.

It hasn't been very common, but on several occasions I've witnessed the horrible B.O. stench as well as the smell of what can only be described as someone crapping his pants. I'm no closer to them than another 50 people in the gym are, but that's like saying you're not studying your homework hard enough if you flinch when someone kicks you in the balls.

Well if the guy smells that bad then yes go tell him he stinks but i have never encountered that bad of a smell that i can smell him enough to distract me from my workout. Take into consideration my gym gets packed im talking an easy 200 people at a time, its a big gym and everyone sweats like a pig but i have only encountered 1 dude that smelled like straight crap

Oh for sure. I haven't experienced it often by any means, but it's been on more than one occasion and it's definitely bothered me. I didn't stop lifting, but I sure noticed it.

Side note: when I was in high school, there was a kid who had FOUL B.O. in my gym class. I feel like a dick, but in all honesty, I didn't mean for it to be. Anyway, his locker was right behind mine in the locker room and when he was facing his locker, I'd hit him with a couple shots of my spray deodorant. It didn't get to work like deodorant is intended, but at least it helped a bit. What I feel worse about is that I sprayed it into the vents of his locker when he wasn't around and I likely messed up his stuff. It wasn't the intent at all; it was an attempt to combat the wretched stench and not be a jerk to him.

Side side note: I later found out that if you sprayed spray deodorant on someone's locker knob (if it was a built in, turn lock), it would basically freeze it and render it unopenable lol.

Dude at my gym there are guys that smell" ripe" like dirty ball sack. And there are obese women who stink terribly all the way across the gym and try to mask it with perfume.
I wish I could have a gym where hygiene was everyone's top priority!

Lmao. Yeah same here in Middle school i was paired up with a kid who smelled like straight crap, and he would try and sit next to me cus he hella wanted to be my friend but dam any chance i had i would move as far away from him. I never told him because i was raised to be as polite as possible and consider everyone else when you do something, so I didnt want to be a douche but it was pretty obvious that when he sat next to me i would make an excuse to get up and then i would sit across him.

Are you serious? Or are you just winding me up?

Can't you read? The guys made it up just to offend me. I spoke to the the manager over the phone, told him exactly what and how he told me that morning and when I went in to see him a few hours later he told me that the guy couldn't name a single person that had complained ('cause there f@cking weren't any!), and that when he gave him the option of either apologising to me or be fired, he still refused to apologise!

So I don't know what the hell you keep on babbling about that I got some poor innocent soul fired because I was embarassed, the son of bitch ahs a track record of racist behaviour towards people from my country and this was the last straw. I'm glad he got fired and I do hope I run into him so I can give him a piece of my mind.
