i dont seem to be making any progress despite in my mind eating very little and mainly protein.

It is, I've seen more bodybuilders posting up IF results lately (amature level) However I prefer it only on rest days with optional LISS cardio added, and my fasting on those days is either 20:4 (dinner only) or 36hrs.
but honestly that circles back to what smont says, its just another way of getting lower calories in for the week.
You can't get a whole lot better than the good basic information from Renaissance Periodization. They are well known for their training and diet templates. Plus he is very entertaining in his delivery. Lots of goofy tongue in cheek one liners to break up all the information.
