should Curling really be an olympic sport?

Thats not what you said, that's what Sunder said. Sunder was quite decent in his approach...but that would be too much to expect from you, now wouldn't it?

If we ever go out, you'll have to let me borrow your shirt ;)
What *I* have said in this thread...

What I find annoying, though, is the dumb-asses who make judgement on something without (what seems like) any practical reasoning to justify their statement.

If Baseball is there then so can Curling be.

Very judgemental people about what is or isn't an athletically inclined or difficult sport.

I'd like to say those with Liberal Arts degrees aren't very smart or academically inclined but they'd be wrong.

Anyway. I'm out of this. You seem to be doing nothing but hijacking this thread because I took exception to some comment your g/f (sorry, fiance) made and a few others as well.

I agree that if someone will fall on their ass the first time they do it, it has an athletic tone to it. So I will consider a sport, a silly sport IMO, but I like golf and how silly is that?

Good point actually. Golf to someone who doesn't play or know much about the sport looks silly easy.

You try and whack that fucking ball. It ain't so easy! lol

14 years I been playing and it still frustrates the hell out of me.

I busted a window on a Honda my last outing. I can drink beer, and drive the cart really good.

Someone said Nascar wasn't a sport?

Damn that is so intense, I totaly disagree.

Just so there's no misunderstandings - as it was quoted twice, I actually never said that. I take no offense to anyone dissing on a "sport" or "game" they've never tried. :)

I definitely did not find anything insulting in Mrs. Gimpy's opening of the thread either - it's a valid question.

Of course, since I played a large variety of sports in my youth, it would do me no good to take any personal offence with any of them. That, and I believe in freedom of expression uncensored, at least when done in a civilized mannor.

While I do think there is a certain amount of athletics and skill involved in curling, I think there are other sports out there that require MUCH more of it. I too actually question the validity of curling as being an Olympic sport. My only defence to it is based on some of the other "questionable" sports at the Olympics as well.

With apparently baseball out of the Olympics, curling does hold less weight I'd think. I personally like it in, but I definitely see how others may not think so. I wouldn't doubt that it partially depends on the tv ratings it gets, which equals $$$.

I imagine Equestrian must be really hard to do. I would probably fall off the horse and break my neck on my first try. It requires a certain amount of athletics and skill too, but I also question it's validity at the Olympics. (Because to me, if we allow riding a horse, then why not driving a car?)

On a side note, did you see those freestyle trick ski jumpers? This one chick had a broken leg/knee before the Olympics, and the doctors told her that there wasn't enough time for it to heal properly. She didn't want to have to wait another 4 years, and jumped. She ended up injuring herself on the landing, poor girl. I don't think I'd have enough guts in my lifetime to do what she did (injury or not). I got a little emotional when she was screaming in pain.

I said it wasn't a sport to me. At least not in the same league as sprinting, swimming, weightlifting , etc. I think I need to split the word "sport" into 2 different words. One word would apply to only events where human beings are the only real tools involved, and one word where other tools are allowed (such as cars, guns, etc).

Either that, or I have to get myself a dictionary and stop making up definitions for myself. :study:

I saw a sprint car race before, and it most entertaining and intense. :run:

BUT - I'm not taking anything away from the skill and athletics of it. There's no denying their intensity or endurance. I just find it harder calling it a sport since a good driver can be beaten by someone in a faster car.

No, a good driver will beat someone in a faster car. You could be JR in my truck and me in a NASCAR car, and he would kick my ass no doubt.

What about Motorcross? Sport or no sport?

Now motorcross is even tougher for me to decide.

On one hand, it seems like guys just holding on to a machine. When you want to go faster, you don't strain yourself or breath harder, you just twist your wrist more.

But on the other hand, the workout on their legs alone is way above that of a someone in curling. And these guys use all their muscles. I've never seen a fat motorcross driver.

Just last year I got my motorcycle license, and drove a motorcycle for the first time (you have to pass an obstacle type course, etc to pass in my province). I can appreciate the skill needed to just do that, and can't imagine how those guys do what they do on the track.

In all honesty - it's probably because I grew up somewhat poor. Makes me jealous of all those people that had motorized vehicles of some type. :) People with money and cars and bikes and nice haircuts always got the girls. So I never got into it. Ice was free and plentiful where I lived, so I took to the winter sports more.

Of course, females weren't all that plentiful either at that time, but that hasn't deterred me from those events now. I'll try to expand my mind. :)
