shorter cardio sessions

Is it possible to have an effective cardio session in 15 minutes? I've heard and read a little about HIIT training but I'm not sure if 15 minutes is even enough for that.

I've always gone with a twenty minute minimum. I've done that since highschool. My track coach always made that a rule for the team.

Yes, it is. When I first started doing HIIT I only did 12 minutes (and only 4 minutes of that was efforts). if you're doing it INTENSE enough, then it IS ENOUGH. If I am strapped for time or feeling knacked I will still only do 12 minutes. it's all about the QUALITY of the session.

Wow, I thought I was the only one who did 12 minute cardio workouts! I always do them after the weight lifting and ab workout portions of my time in the gym. In the past I would go at a moderately intense rate of intensity, with my goal to have at least a mile done in that time (and usually I get to that milestone within 10 minutes and use the rest of the time to cool down) but I heard about HIIT for the first time a few weeks ago and have now been doing that instead. I did 15 minutes for the first time in a very long time 2 days ago though. Felt good.

What is meant by "intense" though? I know it varies from person to person, but I am not sure how intense my intervals are supposed to be.

Personally I do them as maximal as I am capable of doing, and this is how they should be done, IMO. Don't look at a percentage of anything; just go helter for skelter until you have completed the time you set for each interval.
