Sean's Powerlifting Journey

Nov. 2nd at the Hancock Theater in Boston. There's a smaller competition in NH the week before that I might enter if ready.

you're competing in BB right?

Also do both.

I've always done back to back shows.. I've never seen a point to diet for so damn long for just one day. Might as well do a few shows once you're already that lean..

That's how I see it any way, just my .02

I'm gonna try physique this first time around and see what I think of the whole experience. The only shows that I could find around here were NPC (untested) and I'm not sure how well I'd do in their BB category. I doubt that I'd be lean enough at that point either.

Yeah, if I have the cash I'll probably do both. I saw a flyer yesterday for a WBFF show in Providence on Nov. 9 that could be another option. Luckily I don't have to take calories very low to lean out. I'm doing alright now with 3600-3700 a day.

Sorry to hijack, Sean, just one last thing while we're on this subject.

Breezy if you can find a drug tested show do that instead.

the first time I got on stage as a teen, I did two natural shows and did well (1 st/5 in teens, 2 nd/10 in mens novice and 1/4 and 1/4 in both shows, respectively)

I went to a non drug tested show thinking "these guys are teens they won't be on anything"

Couldn't be any more wrong.

I was in the minority being natural and I got destroyed. 4/4, 3/4

Not saying you won't do well, just telling you my experience.

Yeah, that's what I was looking for, but didn't want to travel far for my first show or wait 6+ months. If this ends up being something that I'd like to continue doing, I'll go wherever. I checked out the physique pictures from these comps last year and thought that I could be in decent shape compared to what I saw. Either way, I just want to get the experience, regardless of doing well or getting smoked lol.

Squats 5x5@75% of T1RM Cycle 2

Cycle 2 Training Max's:
Squat- 520
Bench- 280
Deadlift- 485

Warmup
KStarr stuff at home right before I left
Pavel's Deep Squat Drill

Squats
392x5x5 EFS Knee Sleeves + Belt: Brutal

GHR/Unilateral Leg Press

Crap workout. Felt nauseous and spaced out the whole time. Hopefully I'm not coming down with something. Oh well. The EFS sleeves help my knees track but provide zero resistance which is good. I leanred I had been doing the GHR wrong this whole time from watching Pavel. Now I feel it better and can actually do more as well

Pavel's deep squat- Stand on 2 boxes (at least 4" tall) in your squat stance, boxes spaced out. Hold a kettlebell down in front of you with both hands. Squat down, then exhale as much as you can as you finish it, trying to get as deep as you can and open your hips.

Hitting 395 for 5x5 in sleeves and just now learning to use the GHR? Scary lol.

Side note: Don't do the hip flexor distraction around children. I did it with the strong band and mini me straddled it while I was kneeling and proceeded to bounce, out of my reach. I stayed there in the most excruciating stretch for several minutes because he woulda catapulted if I took my leg out, until the wife came inside and took him off

Hip flexors no longer tight

Pavel's depth drill. **** this guy and his splits.

Stretching will kill you and give your dick cancer.

Stretching is good.

It's confusing man! Haha

Awesome skwatz Sean!

haha right? Well Pavel's "strength stretching" is pretty much KStarr's stuff. Just with a hairy Soviet that's convinced everyone can do the splits, they're just afraid to. It's nothing static. You're still mobilizing everything. I just appreciate how Pavel directs it specifically towards sumo/wide stance PLers.

That is definitely cool to have that sport specific help. He is one limber bro.

Sounds good to me! I think it's become my favorite facepulling variation. I think doing it on the lat-pulldown machine is more difficult, but the low-pulley feels pretty effective. Beat my rear delts and traps up.

These have always been my preference for facepulls. When I do them with bands, I always set it at around chest level and pull upwards.

Nice OHP, Sean. No real critiques. Mainly, it's important with lower weight to try to maintain as neutral of a spine as possible and not hyperextend so much, and so when you brace your spine you do it very differently from a squat, almost like you're mid-rep on the ab-wheel.

I had something else to say, but in the 5+ pages I had to read to catch up I forgot what it was...

EDIT: Ah yes, the GHR. Yeah, I think I know exactly how you used to do them. I did them like that as well for the longest time, even on DC. I worked up to doing rest-paused sets with a 45lb plate. Tough ****. No way I could do GHRs with like 66lbs for sets of 10 the old way at 250lbs.

What's the secret, guys?

I am not 100% sure about Sean, but I used to keep my knees more or less on the pad, like near the center, versus letting the knees slide down the pad as you approach the peak of a hamstring contraction on the GHR. So it was more like a "natural GHR" that are done from the floor with someone holding your feet down.

Oh, jeez. You guy are animals! I know what you mean, and i certainly couldn't get anything done that way.

lol exactly Toro!! I thought I read on T-Nation to put your knees on top of the pad. ZERO bend in my knees, torso completely in line with my thighs. I got so pissed off, seeing people do weighted GHR's and I could only knock out like 4 body weight when I started. Finally I worked up to like 10 for 1 set.

Then I see the limber Soviet doing it, saying to allow your knees to go down when moving back up, yet maintaining your torso in line with thighs. Makes so much more sense now.

No gym. Short on evening time and would rather spend it at home with the mini-me. I'll bench tomorrow hopefully, probably at the Air Force gym (douchebags galore, sorry any AF guys) considering its a 5 minute drive compared to 30. I'll Pull Thursday night when he goes to sleep at the real gym.

Lacrosse ball mash everything tonight

Strap the kid to your back and do push-ups. He'll love it. Strongest kid I went to school with went AF. I couldn't believe it because he was massive and they wanted him to lose a lot of weight. Second strongest kid went marines. I'm left with no lifting partners at home now.

Have fun with the little guy. I get to see my "nephew" when I do the meet and that will definitely be one of the highlights. It's too bad you're going to bench at the douchey gym instead of squatting or standing press or O-lifts.

I always love to walk in jacked and do zero of the exercises that the guys just trying to get jacked from muscle mag knowledge are doing. That's how people get accused of having unfair genetics and/or drugs getting all of the credit.

Suddenly I am feeling very weak...

He is Scott Yard out of EliteFTS. He lifts raw and is one strong dude.

Now why you gotta go and make me feel inferior first thing in the morning?

Video isn't loading for me ATM (reception). But the one I'm really curious about is this Burley Hawk character. He's gotten one meet in, zero films of his lifts, and people are all but handing him Don Reinhoudt's raw record that's stood for 28 years.

EDIT: Damn why would someone do that?

Purely done to inspire greatness boys!! It's out there and these guys prove that it is possible.

Makes me happy to hear that you are at least buying ample amounts of groceroids!! Lol

He has some nice numbers. The squat record? He is a junior.

Don Reinhoudt's record for the total, 2391. Reinhoudt's record for the squat, 934 without knee wraps, will hold up for a little while. People these days want their knee wraps. They're saying Hawk has it in the bag next time out, that he went 825/600/800 in his first meet. He's actually 25yrs old.

What weight class are we talking about here?

What weight class are we talking about here?

Real big boys, here. Don Reinhoudt competed at 350-400 and Hawk is about 385 at the moment. Louie's training him raw at the moment to get the Westside raw bashers off his back, but I'm sure after he hits his goal, his next goal will be 3000. Of course, I think Dave Hoff will be the next to hit 3000 well before this new guy on the scene.

Don't know if you've heard or seen this monster. He is Brian Shaw and goes 6'8" at around 400...

Watch after he is done and starts to walk towards the other guys...look at his size compared to them...wow
