Rethinking vitamin D supplementation

After spending lunch last 5 hours with a very well respect lyme specialist, I am.rethinking assessing vitamin d recommendations We have been checking the 25 oh levels and basing recommendations on that which has been total miss.leading. One needs to look at 1,25 and 25 d together. If ratio is > 1.5 then supplementation should be stop. By having a higher ratio one is putting them in a proinflammatory state causing alterations in th1/th2 in balance...vitamin d.may make you feel good.because is a quasi hormone, but may be masking something deeper. Often times when evaluating cases I see high calcium in serum, but never knew what it could be from. The common treatment believe it or not is adrenals which are usually supporting. Now knowing this information I will be looking deeper at the potential pro inflammatory response. not recommending vitamin d. It has to do with effect on vdr response.by effecting antimicrobial antibodies response. Specially a concern in viral or pathogen infection. By changing the ratio of vitamin d 25:1,25 one sees a significant change in inflammation markers..so it does.make sense in the proper situation

I get it. I'm very interested to see what your findings are as I have expressed skepticism with some of the Vitamin D3 dosings I've been hearing mainly for reasons stated above.
The problem is most clinicians will only look at 25-d and forget about others. In addition, as a laboratorian, I find that many dont really know what forms of vitamin D they need to know or how to interpret the data given.

So what's your recommended ratio of 25-d:1,25?

<1.5 would be the recommendations. There is no research to say what the "optimum" ratio is so I can not say. It has shown when levels get >1.5 is where there could be a pro-inflammatory response with elevated inflammatory markers. Again this is not always the case in vitamin D supplement. Since I am finding VDR mutations in just about every one. I am going to start having Drs use this pre caution before supplementation recommendations are suggested. It good to finally get access to the actually people are doing the research to separate the fact from BS. Today was a true enlightening to what people read on line vs what is fact based research. I am also going to look at other mutations which may be associated with this imbalance as well. Now I have resources to actually get founding for research, along with people who are highly respected should open up a lot of doors.

If you have links to any literature discussed could you post?

sub'd for more discussion

I think a lot of doctors sadly don't even understand what they're specifically having tested with bloodwork on Vitamin D (e.g. some testing is a combination of things and they don't seem to recognize that).

Shawn - how are you identifying the VDR mutations?

Through genetic testing labs. There is a new one we have been in contact with. Waiting more details. Company will probably get 1000's of people in near future. I posted this on another board then they thought I was a quack LOL People thought Einstein was a nut job too LOL

No doubt. People call what they don't understand or what isn't the current norm crazy. If/when you get more details on it, I'd love to hear them.

Yes, I willI have been connected with Ph.D's who are eligible for grants for research. I get with them to present the material then see what happens. I am quickly learning it's not only what you know but more who you know is how you progress in this line of work.

No offense but this doc had 5 hours to kill over lunch?
I'm not a doc and I don't have 5 hours to spend over lunch.

We drove 1.5 hour each way to meet on a Saturday. When people are enjoying their weekend I am going to lectures or having meetings with Dr's. How you grow a business and get your name out there. Why I hardly have any time to do anything except deal with clients or do research the other half of the time.

I recently began taking 5000 IU's a day of d3. The highlights of it thus far have been constipation, faster heart beat at night, and sleep issues. I backed the dose down to 1000 and symptoms ceased. Interestingly enough, I looked up d3 sides and mine were at the top of the list for overload
