its not like some guy was walking through the woods and said hey look at this plant, it will free up test or something, lets go test it!.....did they?

It's sort of a cultural/historical thing. People of whatever cultures ate or drank (as tea) the herbs, and noticed an increased libido. Remember, if you can make it fit in your mouth, someone will eat it. The herb gains a reputation as an aphrodisiac. Later on, some scientists get some grants to study the herb for potential medicinal use.

a lot of these things were probably first consumed by animals before people ate them.

horny goat weed was apparently named such because a guy noticed his goats started breeding more when they ate it.

im sure a lot of beliefs about herbs started in simlilar ways.

Historically, through observation, as already noted by thesinner and EatMeat.

Also, people may have been looking for something SPECIFIC, and tried a myriad of herbs/plants, and in the process found out the properties of many. Or they could have selected a herb/plant and decided to investigate its properties and effects.

Many answers...

I think just pure experimenting.Just like people stumbled upon certain herbs and found out about there medicinal properties as far as healing and pain relieving. They make alcohol from plant sources. So people probably just thought that if they can make or use one type of herb for those puposes there has got to be other herbs that can heal joints, boost test levels, help with your eyes, whatever.I am sure they take the chemicals out of these certain plants and inject into lab rats and just run test to see what happens.maybe, maybe not.

Personally, I ran through the wood armed with chain saw and cutting knives and bit a chunk from every piece of bark, leaf, shrub, bush, and dirt until I felt something work. Invalid Link Removed
