new tattoo and lifting

I just got a tattoo that covers part of my inner arm (over tricep), then runs across the inside of my elbow into the top of my forearm...I was told to minimize moving my elbow inwards (or folding the tattoo basically), however I am reading conflicted opinions on different forums. I asked the tattoo artists about weightlifting, but I'd also like some input from people who actually do lift and/or are knowledgeable about tattoo aftercare.

What did you do and how did your decision affect the tattoo?

The only part I'd be concerned about is the inside of the elbow like you said. If you cause friction or any trauma to that area during the healing process you'll cause it to scab up. Scabbing pulls color out and can cause unwanted scarring and uneven color later on. You don't wand scabs on a tattoo you want it kept moist and let it peel and heal like a sunburn. Use Aveno lotion or another non perfumed lotion comparable in moisturizing quality. After it flakes off in 3-4 days you should be fine to lift using movement in that area. Just keep it moisturized with lotion and covered with a long sleeve at the gym. You don't want to pick up an infection from dirty equipment

I'd let it heal a bit first. I have a fairly large piece on my upper back, and I had to wait for it to heal, but mine also hurt when I'd lay on a bench.

ive got sleeves and never had a problem. keep it moist and lift away. try to avoid letting it rub on stuff and your GTG.

I would take a bit of a break and come back to it....

Def keep it clean.

Pretty much what everyone else said. I would just take a few days off or just hit lower body until it completely heals. Once it's healed you have nothing to worry about. Even outside of the gym keep it covered and put lotion on until it heals. The sun can really F**k up a fresh tat. Taking care of a new tat properly is far more important than missing a few workouts in my opinion.

Thanks for the advice all. Luckily I haven't been able to work since getting it due to other reasons, so I've had time to take good care of it and keep it out of the sun. Think I am gonna hit the gym today, but only do movements where I can keep my arm straight (mostly legs). It's so sore. Rubbing the moisturizer in hurts more than actually getting it, haha.

I haven't hit the gym since doing my forearm last Friday, either. Left arm, underside. (Yes, I did it to myself as practice! I'm...dumb. lol) It's healing, and the hair is starting to grow through it, which makes it about as uncomfortable as it gets right now! I gotta wear long sleeves at work now and it's about killin' me! lol

All healed up. :) I took I think 4-5 days off and just made sure to keep it moisturized and washed it when I got home. Also made sure not to let it touch anything. Put my ear bud wire down my shirt and everything was peachy.

I have read somewhere that sweating heals tattoo:thinking:....but I am not so sure about that...best would be to let it heal...it does not take much time...you won't be away from gym for so long..:hmmm:
