Need New Suggestions for Sleep Supplements

Out Cold is one to look into. Really helps wind me down and relax me prior to sleep and does an even better job keeping me asleep.. def worth a look imo.

Thank you for the suggestion. However, I don't react well to high doses of l-dopa and don't react well to any size dose of 5-htp (tried 50 mg before for a few days and had terrible sleep and felt horrible in the morning). That could be a good option though for anyone else having sleep problems that could be reading this thread.

This is spot on, and RC Resurrect is the only formula I've seen with Ornithine in it, but it also has phenibut...which you know the issues with.

I tried your suggestion of a lower zma dose last night. I took two capsules with 1 mg of slow release melatonin. Unfortunately, I woke after an hour. When I couldn't go back to sleep an hour after waking, I took one benadryl and quickly fell back asleep. The weird thing is that I then slept all the way until my alarm went off in the morning and didn't wake up with a headache or feeling groggy. I also felt pretty good and alert when I woke up. That's much better than any other time I took benadryl. So, I think I'll stick with two capsules of zma, melantonin and one benadryl before bed for the next few nights and see how things go. Mw1 is going to send me a sample of Growth Factor XT. I'm hoping I'll be able to replace the benadryl with that for a better long-term bedtime stack.

I believe there are RC Resurrect PM without Phenibut.

I think you're right. I just looked and on at least one site there's is a version without phenibut listed. I may look into that further in the future. However, for now I'll give zma, melatonin and benadryl a try. When the samples for growth factor xt arrive, I'll replace the benadryl with it and see if that helps me stay asleep.

Diphemhydramine loses effects after a few days I believe, but other than that it is a good choice.

Glad to hear the lower dose ZMA may have helped. I hope it improves as it gets into your system.

Unfortunately the lower zma dose didn't help after that first night (even with benadryl). I had two almost sleepless nights after that one good night. So I picked up some Theanine Serene with Relora by Source Naturals and have been taking that the last two nights. So far it seems to be working very well but I'm still taking a benadryl with it.

I really like Rem 8.0 from Formutech..good sleep with no hangover..

Thank you for the suggestion. However, the first ingredient for that product is phenibut which is something I want to avoid due to the high tolerance/addiction potential. Also, I really need to find something that I can use nightly (not just two or three times each week).

A question for anyone that reads this - is it possible that too high of a magnesium dose before bed could actually cause sleep problems? The reason I ask is that last night I only took 200 mg of magnesium glycinate (instead of the usual 400 mg) and actually slept much better. I also recall that a few weeks ago my wife tried taking 3 zma instead of the usual 2 and couldn't sleep that night. When she switched back to 2, she started sleeping fine again.

Honestly bro, if you've gone through this many supplements and are still having issues, you should see a doctor because there is probably an underlying condition. If 47 supplements don't fix your problem, it's unlikely the 48th will. There are not that many unique sleep supplements. You should work with your doctor - whether it's stress, anxiety, depression, or something else - they are much better equipped to handle a problem of your magnitude than the supplement industry is.

Sorta seems like you're trying to treat cancer with vitamin C. Works great for a cold, but what you have isn't a cold.

Sorry it didn't help. And yes, TOO much magnesium or ZMA will cause sleeplessness quite a bit of the time. I've been through it, mildly, and have read other accounts where people couldn't sleep at all on ZMA. That is why I suggested reducing your dosage and not increasing it when you said it didn't work.

This does sound like a serious problem that a doctor should have a look at, as Woody raises some good points. I know you may not have the resources for that at the moment, but it is good advice.

Did you ever try the GABA? L-Theanine?

I agree. I found out yesterday that the company I work for has decided to add health insurance coverage started the beginning of next year. So, I'll be able to get in for a sleep study soon and hopefully fix this problem.

edit: just wanted to add that I completely agree that there is probably an underlying (maybe genetic) issue since multiple family members are on medication to help with their sleep issues.

I'll try reducing the magnesium dose for a while and see if things level out (instead of giving up too quickly).

It appears with my new coverage starting at the beginning of this next year, I should finally be able to see a doctor and get this fixed.

I was planning on buying gaba today (since it's cheaper than l-theanine) to try with the lower dose of magnesium and benadryl. Hopefully that will improve things enough until my health insurance kicks in Jan 1st.
