My understanding of weight training

So iv been working out for over a year. I do about 5-7 compound excercises and 2-4 isolation. I do about 3 sets of 8-12 reps each exercise. Iv always gone to failure on all my excercises cuz I thought that's the only way you grow but now I'm reading articles saying to only go to failure once every two weeks and others that say you should go to failure on everything but only do one set per exercise. I have average genetics and do not use steriods. Is what iv been doing wrong for a normal person? I haven't grown much on it
