My training for hopefully my first MMA fight log

How's your conditioning been? My grappling conditioning is pretty good most of the time. I cycle carbs so it is hit and miss. I do GPP stuff from time to time as well, but my stand up kind of stalls out after a while. I start going flat footed after a few rounds. It's a good thing I drill takedowns a lot. ;)

Keep the frequency up man. If you can't meet up and train with someone, find a bag or so some shadowboxing. I even got a grappling dummy to practice on because my wife is a pussy if I try to roll with her. lol

grappling my conditioning is going pretty good, but boxing is another story.. I gas out pretty quick when I box. Been working on that though.

I think you'd be intimidating as hell at lhw. With your height you gotta learn how to throw a good knee. But not just any knee a really powerfull knee. I'll try to explain a good mt knee. Throw a jab, drop your base down a little and lean forward, but don't lean so far forward that your chest goes past the heel of your lead leg.(This should be the key to all your striking) Then all at once straighten your lead leg, your heel comes off the floor, as your exploding your hips forward, your knee goes up, toes point down (you could break a toe on something and it makes your knee cut like a knife)and you lean back as far as you can comfortably. All the power comes from snapping your body back like that.
The jab is just a fake to get them to raise their hands, leave it in their face while your kneeing them and cover your jaw with your other arm. The forearm and bicep should wrap tightely around your jaw, wrap the back of your hand around the back of your head. This should help protect you from catching a counter, but if the technique is executed properly you should be just out of striking range.
Keep practicing on a bag, I also alternate a front kick rear knee combo. Be ready to drop back into your fighting stance and follow it up with a 2 5 2 combo and that should be enough to ko anybody.
When you get the technique down, have someone hold the bag for you, they should be able to feel your power. When they tell you dude you got some sick knees then you know you've got some serious power.
Check out Brandon Vera's fights, He's got awesome technique.
That's about all I can add, keep training with that sambo dude that stuff is baddass.

By the way it took me over a year to get that technique down, and watching someone else who had devestating knees was the key to figuring it out. Don't try to over analyze it, it's got to be a thing you get a feel for. All my techniques became golden when I learned to stop trying to think it and just go with the flow and do it.

Went over to a local MMA gym to train yesterday. I am going to try and make it over there at least once per week on top of the other MMA training I am doing. Yesterday was striking, and I felt I did very well. Some guys from the show said they can definatly tell I've been working on my standup as it was much crisper than before. I felt good after the hour class, unlike before where I would totally gas.

going to a submission wrestling/jiu jitsu class tonight as well as a conditioning class.. so I have a packed day.. get off work, hit the gym, go home and eat, then head out to the classes until 7:30pm, then eat some more.

Interested in fighting in NW Indiana May 31st./

Cody offered me a March. 29th fight, but I'm getting a vasectomy on the 7th and think it is too close together for my first fight. I'd miss out on at least a good week of training, and at this stage in my training, that would be a big chunk. I'm shooting for a summer fight pending my training goes well. At this point, I'm training with so many people because of my scheduling things get hectic. I box with a local guy here, train sambo with some guys in morganfield, just recently started going to a local MMA gym here, and hopefully this week will go up to Washington IN to spar with a guy off of the show (Craig Cox).

I'm putting on a show May 31... Ammy fights will be weigh in DAY OF THE SHOW at 5PM. I'd pay your travel, give you a hotel and pay you per ticket sold if you wanted to sell any. Would match you up with another non-pro with a similar background. The show will be in front of 2000+ people. My email = MMAAnnouncingMW at AOL dot COM

Wow very generous, you should do it Tat. There will be no better way to learn what you need to work on.

I'm really set on though competing here locally... I appreciate the offer, and am throwing it around in my head, but I still have a ways to go on getting "ring ready" and dont want to commit to anything until I feel I've met this goal for myself.

Fair enough. Just offering what I can. I'll PM you a guy from Bloomington that you can get in touch with.

Mouth I really do appreciate the offer, but since I'm kinda "piecing" together my own training, and training partners are come and go with me, I want to make sure I'm ready. I always try and over prepare myself for stuff though, I'm my biggest critique. I think I'd do better too with a hometown crowd behind me, more pressure... strange I know, but I perform best under pressure. Just trying to feel my training out and impress some of the local guys.... Once I hear more from them on where they think I stand, then I can make an educated choice on where I plan on going from there.

Chris has a camp and a show. Just more options training wise.

i will def. train with him... i never pass up an opportunity to train with new people... cant hurt learning from a multitude of people.

couldnt train last night.. had to deal with some sheriffs/police, big huge ordeal, but its over.

That sucks =(

yeah but things came out to benefit me. Had to do with my ex and my son. Its over now and she is pissed because she was wrong. I had to get the cops involved because she tries to use my size against me and figured it would be best to have someone there in case she tried saying I put my hands on her or something.

he was sick with the flu all weekend.. ex dropped him off with a fever at the sitters, sitter called me and I had to take off work to get him. Story kinda rolls into what happened Monday, but hopefully she wont try and be sneaky about having other people watch my son anymore as I caught her in a bold faced lie. She'll do anything to make sure my son spends as little time with me and would rather him spend time with non family members over me. It felt good to have a small victory last night, but dont get me wrong, I'd sell my soul to the devil right now if he'd end her.

Thats too bad. I hope as time goes on she eases up and you can spend all the time you want. Kids need their dad! Its hard in the beginning because all of the hurt and anger emotions are there.

thats the thing though, i dont understand why she is mad at me.. she is the one that wanted this. she is the one that went out and cheated, i did nothing but be a good provider and good father. Oh well, it was nice to rub a little salt in last night, I was dancing on the inside because I was right and she got caught in a lie. Was the first time in a long time I felt good inside.

well, after last night, I've made the decision I will fight LHW. I got partnered up with a 260-270lb muscular guy last night and my back is torn up. Its not fun having a guy that big dry hump you like that when I'm giving up 50-60lbs to him and we are working from them having their full hooks in. I tried to stay for the conditioning part after the sub class was over, but my knees just wouldn't take the explosive continual movements with my legs being fully bent. I gotta figure out another way to get my cardio in without so much repetitive movement that causes my knees grief.

stretch your quads/hammies/hips. Your knees will get better especially with deep quad stretches.. More often than not, tight quads = tight patella = knee issues.

A guy like you, with long levers will greatly benefit from flexibility training. You'd be an octopus after a while.

i'm very flexible, but my knees are awful. the trainer Scott thinks it could be osteoarthritis in my knee. When it bends past 90 degrees, it pops and i lose strength in it for a bit. I'm going to give it a week and start up the Osteobolin-C before I go back in. I'm fine with grappling, but during the conditioning stuff is when it bothers me.

If there is that concern, I would definitely see a specialist, as knees take a beating in a lot of areas in life. Your knee mobility/leg strength is pretty important in BJJ.
