Musician Dies From Caffeine Toxicity After Adding Powder To Protein Shake

Rebecca Shepherd

A musician passed away on New Year's Day from caffeine toxicity after he added 'lethal' caffeine powder to his protein shake.
Lachlan Foote, 21, was due to celebrate his 22nd birthday the following day but instead his family found him dead on the bathroom floor of their home in Blackheath, New South Wales, Australia.

Now his dad has posted a heartbreaking message on to Facebook with the hope of possibly 'saving someone else's life'.

Lachlan Foote should have turned 22 the following day. Credit: Facebook/Nigel Foote/Zoe Thornthwaite
After receiving the Coroner's report which found that Lachlan died of 'caffeine toxicity' his dad issued a warning about the potential consequences that can come with adding caffeine powder into protein shakes.
Nigel Foote wrote on his Facebook page: "While I don't wish to keep raising the subject of Lachlan's death on facebook, I'm posting this because there's a possibility it might save someone's life.
"Dawn and I have finally received the Coroner's findings regarding Lachlan - he died of 'caffeine toxicity' (not from a dodgy batch of protein powder as we had first thought). There was nothing else in his system except a small amount of alcohol (.043).

"It turns out that Lachlan came home after celebrating New Year's Eve with his friends and made a protein shake, innocently adding too much [caffeine powder] - a teaspoon is lethal (the equivalent of 25-50 coffees)."

Lachlan was a keen musician. Credit: Facebook/Nigel Foote/Rachel Brady
Mr Foote went on: "We think Lachlan obtained the caffeine powder from a friend or work associate as a thorough search of his computer and bank statements, by both myself and the police, revealed no mention of caffeine powder, only related protein powder products.
"Therefore, it appears the pure caffeine powder was bought by someone else and shared, so it's very likely that Lachlan never got to read the warning label on the packet and was unaware of its potency.
"And the fact that he kept the caffeine powder in our kitchen pantry (where one of us might have mistaken it for flour or sugar) proves the point - Lachlan would never have kept it there had he known it was a threat to the family. He was a bright, imaginative young man.
"We're concerned that there might be other young people in his circle who bought or shared in this batch of pure caffeine powder and, like Lachlan, be unaware of the danger... hence this post."
Before his passing Lachlan had mentioned that his protein shake tasted bitter and in a Facebook message to his friends, he wrote: "I think my protein powder has gone off. Just made an anti hangover / workout shake and it tasted awful".
When a friend asked 'how', the 21-year-old responded: "dunno, was kinda bitter though... anyway night lads".

Lachlan added the caffeine powder into his protein shake. Credit: Facebook/Lachlan Foote
Mr Foote continued with his post: "Morning never came for Lachlan. We found him, dead and cold on the bathroom floor (New Year's Day 2018)... the day before his 22nd birthday.
"It has been an excruciating wait for the Coroner's findings, but the love and support we have received from our family, friends and this fabulous Blue Mountains community has seen us through. We can never thank you enough.
"The investigation is finally over and we are not left wondering what exactly happened to Lachie any more - we now know. The original autopsy revealed caffeine but not the precise levels, so another, more specialised test had to be done, hence the delay. The Coroner's forensic team and counselling staff have been wonderful.
"We bear no ill feeling toward whoever shared the caffeine powder with Lachlan as we're sure this was just a tragic, innocent mistake.
"It's just insane that something so dangerous is so readily available. Please warn your friends, talk to your children... and perhaps check your kitchen cupboards...pure caffeine powder looks just like any other white powder... but a heaped teaspoon of it will kill you.
"I'm not going to go on a crusade about caffeine powder - we need to move on - but I do want to warn Lachlan's friends and the Blue Mountains community.
"I will post some special 'Lachlan moments' now and then - perhaps on his birthday - for I know how much he meant to so many of you. He lives on in our hearts... our photos... and in the stars..."

I’m surprised it doesn’t happen more often.

For something that needs to be dosed in relatively small doses (I.e. compared to the volume of protein he’d Have used) pure caffeine powder being sold by bulk suppliers in 1kg bags is borderline dangerous. It’s so easy to get distracted, add far too much like this guy and end up dead.

There’s been a few similar cases here in the past where people have got dosages all wrong and ended up killing themselves by accident

I’ve never seen caffeine in powder form only ever caps?

Why was he adding it to protein powder?

Also, easy to blame the caffeine and not the guy being careless and not reading/following simple dosage instructions

This is why we can’t have nice things.

Sounds like a truly awful way to die. Totally preventable and senseless. They found him on the bathroom floor. Hurts my heart. He must have been so scared. I hope it was quick

Never looked, only ever saw the tubs of caps

Either way totally avoidable
Avoidable, yes, but still no need to be selling kilo bags of something that’ll kill you if you overdose

Their are and have been numerous vendors that sell caffeine in bulk. You can kill yourself taking too much of allot of things. This is unfortunate natural selection if he served himself that is...

Truly sad, and preventable.
I've read this also occurs when gamers pull all nighters and drink energy drinks excessively.

I’ve heard of them dying from clots I think from sitting to long. To die from energy drinks it would take a ton. Lol you would wish you were dead long before lethal dose was hit. Caffeine becomes really uncomfortable long before fatal dose is hit.

Truth. This is sad and people need to also take accountability for their actions.
if they are going to sell bulk ingredients like caffeine/ycl then they need to put BOLD PRINT WARNINGS on package...I had a serious encounter like this back in the day with bulk ycl, I used almost a full tspn and nearly ended up in emergency room.

This has happened a few times over the past few years. It is highly preventable - the LD50 is like 10-20 grams. A teaspoon is around 5 grams so...you have to be either really unlucky with your placement on the bell curve or it will take more than a teaspoon to kill you.

Certainly measuring things out with a protein scooper isn't wise in this case either.

It is tragic and good for people to be aware, but some things are dangerous and laws can't change that.

Just looked on my protein at there bulk caffeine powder

It says on the page a warning and to use a digital scale When measuring out caffeine.

Obviously this guys friend or whoever gave him the powder forgot to tell him.

But tbh, if someone handed
Me some powder and was like take this for XYZ I’d still just google it and see what’s what

You know, common sense.

There are millions of people out there that manage to NOT KILL themselves with drugs far more potent and deadly, ie recreational RC's measured in mcg, and they are high as a kite drug addicts. I feel terrible for the parents and friends of this man but not for him. I took too much powder yohimbine once and it was awful..... it was also 100% MY FAULT and 100% stupid. On planet earth when you do something 100% stupid sometimes you end up dead. My dumb ass was lucky that day.

Right? A teaspoon killed him? If the LD was as high as you said, and he only had the 5g, why did he die?

You have to remember, it was new years eve and he was drunk. Some say it was a teaspoon, others say it was a protein scoop of caffein. They can only guess from the toxicology. The guy sent a message from his phone to his friends saying he was trying to avoid a hangover, hense the caffein and that his shake tastes "off". No one knows exactly how much he added because he didn't live to tell.

Sad... It was probably more than a tsp. The article says tsp right but is that what the people who did the autopsy actually said? Idk

It's also important to remember that a TON of people get tsp and tbsp mixed up easily, and there is a 3 fold difference between the two

Yeah - from Wikipedia: "Massive overdose can result in death.[118][119] The LD50 of caffeine in humans is dependent on individual sensitivity, but is estimated to be 150–200 milligrams per kilogram of body mass (75–100 cups of coffee for a 70 kilogram adult).[120][failed verification] A number of fatalities have been caused by overdoses of readily available powdered caffeine supplements, for which the estimated lethal amount is less than a tablespoon.[121] The lethal dose is lower in individuals whose ability to metabolize caffeine is impaired due to genetics or chronic liver disease.[122] A death was reported in a man with liver cirrhosis who overdosed on caffeinated mints."

At 81 kg. = 180 pounds = 12.2 g - 16.2 g of caffeine.

Of course, the second half of the wiki entry there may have a clue- he may have had some liver disease or something.

more than likely that he has an undiagnosed heart issue, as with almost all cases like this.
I actually respectfully disagree here - as per above, maybe it was liver disease - but I think the effects of caffeine on the heart are greatly over exaggerated. Maybe you are right and I am wrong...but it seems everyone with a heart issue is told to avoid caffeine and I've never really seen any evidence for this.

I think part of this is that his father is quoted as saying, "A teaspoon can kill you." which is a reasonable concession. He is wrong, a teaspoon is unlikely to kill you (although filling a serving teaspoon with 1 tablespoon full of powder may) - but his son just died and he doesn't want to come out and say, "He was an idiot and used a protein scooper." Nor should he. He is trying to, in a normal way, be respectful and not make his son look like he was just stupid. The line between perp and victim is semantics here. And in being conservative, he may keep someone else from doing something dumb. If everyone avoids a teaspoon, we will all be safe. If people think up to a tablespoon is fine, someone with issues could still die.

Yea I see that. Well that's probably him. His body just did not respond well. The LD is different in someone who doesn't metabolize it well or maybe his liver. Or like stated above they confused tsp with tbsp.

Recently I've been taking 800mg-1grm a day. My body is responding ok. I think if googled you will find the dose for men should be up to 400mg a day

I made this statement due to similar instances in the recent past always being linked to an undiagnosed heart issue, not that I believe caffeine is dangerous for people to ingest with or without heart issues.

I don't think he knows. Pure speculation mind. I doubt the jar was left unscrewed on the kitchen counter with a teaspoon sticking out of it. Chances are he had a scoop for his protein and used the same one for the caffein. There is more chance his dad doesn't even know protein powders for the most part come with a scoop included and presumed he was using spoons.

As for liver desease I recon that would have come out in the autopsy however he had just got home after binge drinking on new years eve. Let's just say his liver was already hard at work before he made his shake.

Yeah, I hear ya - your statement is not unheard of. I may be wrong, I just push back a little because I feel like this isn't questioned enough.

So you think the Father could have downplayed it to protect the image of his son? Tsp instead of protein scoop
I think I probably might have. If your son died of a heroin overdose would you say, "Massive doses will kill you." or would you say, "You know, he got caught up in this and it is dangerous stuff, and he wasn't a bad kid. A little bit will ruin your life."

I think it's reasonable to be protective, and it doesn't hurt to be conservative with dosing, giving it is intended as a warning to others.

I don't think he knows. Pure speculation mind. I doubt the jar was left unscrewed on the kitchen counter with a teaspoon sticking out of it. LMAO! I picture a kitchen with the jar and this massive spoon sticking out of it, and I just find that funny for some reason. Like, the smoking jar. I am strange.

What really annoyed me about this story was the headlines that I saw which read something like "young healthy man dies after drinking protein shake laced with caffeine" as if to suggest it was some dodgy supplement that did him in.

I am sorry someone lost his life.

Period.

But, this is one of the reasons we "can't have nice things" - because people use them improperly and they cannot be expected to have any responsibility. So, our friends in the Government seize the opportunity to step in and make sure we don't hurt ourselves. And, as a result, many great things are no longer available for purchase.

Hard Rhino used to sell bulk caffeine. They don't anymore. Why? Because they were sued after a friend of someone who brought the bulk caffeine from them used it, and died. He dumped a large amount in, and suffered a fate similar to the musician.

His parents sued Hard Rhino. The person who used the caffeine did so without any idea what it was, and he did not even purchase it himself.

But - someone has to be financially responsible - at least in today's society. If there is a victim, then there has to be a victimizer - because no one is responsible for his or her actions.

Pre-dosed tablets are great - I use them regularly but as per examples above, my concern is that it’s being sold in 1kg bags, the same size as protein comes in. Same size containers but needs to be relatively micro-dosed (200mg as opposed to 30g) and it’s easily done, as we’ve seen, to make a mistake and pay a terrible price for it, especially if you’re not in the right frame of mind (I.e. hungover as this kid was or you’re up much earlier than you’re used to and aren’t paying attention because you’re tired).

It’s more than likely that this kid’s probably used the same scoop for the protein as he did for the caffeine and ended up goosed. We’ve probably all had high dose (600mg upwards) caffeine experiences with pre-workouts etc* and I don’t think I’ve ever had it affect the taste of what I was drinking. If he’s text someone and said his protein tastes off, it must have been way more than a teaspoon.

Yes, there’s an element of personal responsibility but I still think it’s irresponsible to be flogging something like caffeine is such big quantities to individuals and it doesn’t surprise me that it’s been discussed at government level.

(*wrongly labelled sample vials labelled as 1 serving. Doubled up (as you do) only to have the workout of a lifetime. I’m pretty certain I saw god. Turns out they were 2 serve vials and i’d had around 900mg caffeine. Calf pump was so intense I couldn’t walk properly for 4 days).

Haha, lots of people say caffeine is tasteless, but for me it has a specific taste and is bitter. Granted - in a shake at under a gram I doubt I would taste it, but taking powder straight it definately has taste. I have tub that I boughy 10 years ago that I haven't used half of though haha.

This is really sad, and I agree about putting large warnings on the bags, they probably shouldn’t even sell them at all. But to play devils advocate the same thing could happen with many other substances we regularly have access to. I feel bad for his family.

I would hope that anyone who buys bulk caffeine would know that the typical dose of caffeine is 200-400mg, which should be obviously too small an amount to eyeball. I really don't get why you would take caffeine powder without a miligram scale to measure it. Like others have said, I'm sorry he died, but I don't understand why he would do what he did.
