Mountain bike suggestions

Mountain bikers....
I have not cared about mountain biking in about 6 years. I need to get back into it. What are some good hard tails and FS frame bikes that would keep me under $500? I don't need an indestructible high tech $2000 bike just yet. And I can upgrade parts later.

In that price range your best bet would be used. If your patient you can find some good buys on craigs list or mtbr classifieds.

Thanks.
I saw some Diamondbacks in the $500 range and reviews were great but its hard to tell what kind of backgrounds the users have.
I would be willing to spend a bit more on myself but the thing is I am getting something for the gf too.

I think the one I was looking at was the Overdrive. Priced just under $500. Over time, I can imagine I will invest at least another $500 customizing here and there as I get back into it.

+1 Baskets with flowers are the key to pushing yourself!

On a side (main?) note, I just picked up a diamondback for my girll and I, they showed up today, gonna build them up sometime soon and let ya know what I think as soon as i get them out, they aren't true mountain bikes, but kinda hybrid style (more dirt path than dirt trail), as she's not interested in real mountain riding, and we don't really have much of it around here anyways, I figured why saddle myself with the rolling penalty for a tread pattern I won't be utilizing?

Not bad pricing on the trace sport, and the reviews look good too.

Another option is Costco. They have a 29er that is around 500 and for the price is not that bad.

Lol...is this serious??

i know its a tad late, but look into the Kona "Hoss" bike, they are build for us bigger boned people and they are not that pricy. i built a DH bike for myself with Salsa Gordo rims and an Azonics Steelhead frame, best bike i have made but it weighs in at 39.5#'s, kind of heavy but its stood up to my 280# frame for 3'ish years
