Melatonin, other uses besides sleep?

Besides improving sleep and aid in getting sleep, what other uses does Melatonin have?

I remember that Muscletech added it in Halo, why?

I also read in a different thread that it could help with leptin signaling? Which thread was that?

You need a certain amount of it to maintain proper brain health (in terms of memories) as well as helping with mood.

Not a great sleep aid IMO though you could take it for things like jet lag to shorten it.

Why?

I thought the usuall dose was 3-5mg before bedtime?

People dose it that high because they are misusing melatonin. They are trying to essentially use it as a sedative. That is not what melatonin is really for.

If you want a sedative quality, 5-htp, phenibut, and GABA are better suited.

Melatonin is pretty much useless as a sleep aid unless you are experiencing jet lag. It won't make you drowsy or help you get to sleep. I would look into something else as other said. I prefer phenibut only when necessary.

It can aid in reducing sleep onset latency.

I wouldn't use melatonin for anything but sleep purposes. 1mg at the most.

Studies have been conducted in the 5 mg range to be as effective and work the same mechanism as l-dopa at .5 mg. but there was an increase in oxytocin and vasopressin. As opposed to 5 mg which had the same effect on gh but lowered oxytocin and vasopressin leading to a diuretic effect and better effect on premature ejaculation.

Studies also conducted with 5mg and caffeine show increased protein synthesis.

All up in the air.

Also melatonin been shown to increase gh response when taking it before trainkng

Yes, but other applications.

I agree here as well.

I haven't noticed any drowsiness when taking it with my pwo carbs in the afternoon

Haven't seen this mentioned yet...read about the alleged role of melatonin in the activity of the pineal gland. In my opinion, it is closely tied to why melatonin gives many people I know some very vivid and odd dreams.

I got a sample of some supp from GNC called "Dream Weaver" with melatonin, GABA, and a few other things in it...gave me insane dreams, I loved it! I've had a hard time finding it again though....searching that phrase online mainly brings up things about the old glam rock song!

Pineal gland calcifies as we age and that's thought to be one ofthe many reason why insulin restiance shows it's face as we age because melatonin does have effects on glucose uptake

We recently had an exam on this and the only pathology associated with excessive pineal gland calcification is alzheimer's disease (and that's an association; i doubt it's causative)

You don't want to lower vasopressin or oxytocin. Vasopressin is excellent for memory and oxytocin is attributed to love, happiness, and bonding

Yea well aware of oxytocin. More melatonin less attachment? Good for booty calls? Loj

Just playin.

Of course theses are not things to play around with long term at those doses

Alcohol also inhibits vasopressin

My whole reason I started playing with it was to remove need for diuretic pre contest by losing vasopressin

Also shows to be a stat3 inhibitor which has been a possible way to lower myostatin.

There's a lot it does. But like insaid. All up in the air as to dosing since it seems to fall on a weird U shaped curve

Agreed, I was speaking just on it's use as a sleep aid though :P

The other uses you have mentioned are indeed intriguing and new to me.

I play around with it here and there. I'll play aroun with it pre contest every 5th day with as little as 30g carb (at night) for leptin expression. That's about it tho. And night before contest due to effect on vasopressin to eliminate need for diuretic
