We are an educated crowd of supplement users here, and also a very small fraction of consumers in the industry.

Those subscribed to JISSN got this earlier:

Over 500 Canadian athletes completed a survey on their supplement use and answered why they are using each.

"When athletes were asked to evaluate their knowledge of the reasons for taking dietary supplements six percent were “not sure”, 22 % said they knew the reasons for “some” of the supplements, 30 % said they knew the purpose of “many” of the supplements they took, and 42 % reported they knew the reasons for taking “all” of their supplements."

This is interesting to see athletes not even caring to research what they are taking (albeit age ranges went down to 12, but in the upper age group to 25 the answers were about the same.

A big part of the supplement use reasoning was that they were "told it helps"

^this is why flashy labels and big claims work.

"Protein powders, BCAA, and glutamine were strongly linked to performance reasons for supplementation; however, beta-alanine was not. Energy drinks were associated with muscle mass/strength, endurance, increase energy, and recovery but not overall athletic performance. Sport/electrolyte drinks, sport gels and gummies, sport/protein bars, and recovery drinks were associated with all performance reasons as was creatine, with the exception of increase energy (Table 4). Plant extracts were associated with muscle mass/strength, increase energy, overall athletic performance, however, the association was not as strong as with many other supplements (Table 4)."

Did you guys see a performance aid there? (Top)
I saw BA, which they apparently did not associate correctly.

But never fear, apparently energy drinks = muscle mass but not performance.

Wait, what...?

In a market saturated with misinformation (as is a lot of the fitness world) and also a general lack of research put in before purchases we need to step up.

Particularly because of how young some of these athletes are starting..,

As annoying as it may be to people I will always strive to inform the uninformed. In the gym, online, or while watching someone spend a fortune on detox drinks.

I know why I take "all" of the stuff I take. Gainz.

Very well said, I agree 100%. Its frustrating to hear some of the BS a lot of the supplement companies push. I think the well informed and educated people need to be more outspoken and helpful toward those who are being misled. Especially the younger guys just getting started.

and this is why supplement company owners are driving around in lambos and ferraris ...
most of these supplements aren't worth the cost of the packaging they come in, the scientific studies proving an increase in test levels, muscle mass gains, etc... are over the top and people believe what they want to believe, not realizing that yes - maybe there are some benefits - but they are not enough to see a noticeable difference in your body composition. Most of these supplements cost more than actual steroids... it boggles my mind how excited people get over some of these supplements.

example... OL releases a new laxo product today... who gives a sh1t... well apparently lots of people because they see that there's a "sale" price and buy a dozen of the things and by this time next year they'll look the exact same... aside from any natural gains they made from the actual hard work they put in

Possibly in their defense, trust is obviously a big factor here.

I mean, I honestly cbf researching every compound I supplement, especially when the companies I choose to purchase from have a reliable track record as far as having done that tedious legwork for me.

It doesn't help that you have Vitamin Shoppe and GNC with people in there who must just make stuff up as they go...and even the news doesn't help with their reporting on scientific findings as if research done 2 years ago is brand new and definitive and then coming out with a new study to publicize a week later that says the opposite.

It would be very entertaining as well to see a survey about "why are you doing this exercise instead of that exercise"

As for the above survey.. its so dam easy to manipulate the masses, so dam easy

Thought this was common knowledge. Professional athletes are good at one thing, the sport they play. In my experience (my wife's family has a bunch of famous professional in it) they are pretty average/below average in other aspects of life.

Honestly, no surprise. There is a reason why being a corporate guy with 23 years of lifting and competition under my belt, this is the only "supplement" or weight lifting site I belong to.

Exactly. Sites like this (well pretty much just this) are helping to educate members who hopefully pass the word along.

This thread kinda makes me go , TBH.

It reminds of when people have excel stored and just use its most basic function, I.e storing tabular data. They are convinced they need excel yet havent the slightest clue how to use it.

Also, sone people simply dont care about what they use and educating them just bores them. You have to pick your battles when it comes to educating

About 18 years ago I had a supplement company (I was in college at the time) and people would come to me for help. I was very excited about learning this stuff, so I'd start talking to them and they would tell me their issues and what they were looking for. Being excited and learning a lot (and long winded as T-Bone has noted), I'd launch into the hows and whys of the product that would help them and what things they could try for different reasons. 99% of the time, they'd get a glazed look and I would realize that they really just didn't care at all about any of it. They just wanted to say, "I need to lose weight" and for me to go, "Oh, take this".

There are no limits to human laziness.
