MARIJUANA v.s. MUSCLE

INSAYNE RAGE

New member
I know this type of thread has come up before but this is based on another topic..

First, Because of the unfiltered smoke and the high amount of carcinogens entering the body, would smoking a joint or a bowl or two of some good ganga effect the bodys overall effect or speed of repairing muscle?

Second, I know this isnt a medical forum but any ideas if smoking reefer for several years (5-7years) can add so much carcinogens and free radicals to wear down a persons' joints to the point where he/she (or in my case "I") cant hit the weights because of weak and painful joints?? anyone else experience this?

Finally, any other input on cannabis and the effect it would have on a athletes body who ideally takes a multivitamin, with all the pre/postworkout supplements and eats a healthy-moderatly healthy diet.

***The smoking part being every day or at the end of the night..***

theres talk about long term use decreasing test... i burned as often as you for quite a few years and I feel like it was too much.

with herb, the dangers arent really in the carcinogens. i mean, sure you are inhaling smoke but there are carcinogens everywhere...car exaust, grilling, non stick pans, etc. in my opinion the problem is the dopamine. Dopamine is commonly associated with the reward system of the brain, providing feelings of enjoyment and reinforcement to motivate a person proactively to perform certain activities. so in my opinion, tricking the brain and getting high every day will lead to a disfunction.

an acupuncturist told me once that for every high there will be a low, the higher the high the lower the low. so if you are constantly jacking up the dopamine there will be a dropoff, like the serotonin dump the day after doing E. after smoking so much, i felt like my brain depended on it to create dopamine, it would make me extremely anxious so i can get more. a very uncomfortable time in my life. i actually spent some time on message boards and saw tons of people my age and older who were having the same issues. now i blaze up every once in a while and its a whole lot more fun without the addiction.

bottom line is everything is good in moderation. chronic wont affect your gains in the gym directly but for optimal health (mental) its not good to do any drugs every single day. depending on anything (coffee, cigs, drinking) is unhealthy on one level or another.

I couldnt agree more with Anton. I myself enjoy smokeing every now and then, but as i look back on the days I smoked alot, i notice that was when i couldnt stick to my diet, lacked motivation and made no progress to say the least. Everyone reacts different but this is just my experience. No sore joints to speak of though...just a lack of ambition on my part.

Yeah, i've cut down dramatically and have been able to tell a difference in energy levels and focus throughout the day. Ive decided to turn up the amount of antioxidants in my diet and hopefully thatll help with my degrading joints. Appreciate it

megadose fishoil. essential fatty acids are very good for the joints. take like 15 to 20 grams of fishoil a day for a month and you'll see a difference.

Marijuana contains phytoestrogens, just like soy. To what extent these phytoestrogens may impact the physiology of an athletes, especially males, body is up for debate. There isn't much information in the medical literature regarding cannibis consumption and male endocrine function.

On a second note, inhaling the smoke does damage the lungs. Years of smoke can increase lung inflammation, degrade lung paranchyma, and result in mesothelioma or emphysema. Reduced oxygen delivery into the blood equates into reduced recovery. Again, what impact this will have on gains has never really been investigated.

Personally, I think its good to be a disciplined lifter before you start smoking, but smoking and lifting go together. I like to work out high. On top of that, their is nothing better than being worn out from lifting, and using weed to just relax and lower stress hormones.

SMOKING WEED=MUSCLES. how many of theses threads do we really need? Fact of the matter is that most people in the world have a crutch, wether it be food, cigs, booze, pills, or what ever. Another fact is that alcohol is far worse from a medical standpoint.

So smoke if your gonna, dont look for lame excuses to do things or not to do things.

actually- it could affect your gains- smoking is shown to decrease protein synthesis by about 30%- this is ciggerattes mind you- but if you research- marijuana is like 10x stronger than ciggarettes in THIS aspect-I would quit-if ur willing too

I am an meth addict(not active)

that stuff will eat muscle and bone like no other- i quit- now i weigh 221 lol

I wasnt aimed at really making excuses. I was trying to figure what is the reason for my extremely torn down joints. I peaked in my bench at around 285 (my personal best) and now after 4 months of proper nutrition and same routine I can barely lift 225.
Point being was to see if anyone had any correlation with my situation, thats all.

Vaporize if your worried. I have a vaporizer with water bong attachment...much cleaner than smoking...

thats awesome, never herd of having both together lol

my main concern would probably be pinpointing my main cause of these grandpa joints so i dont end up lifting the 5lb weights as a max out. lol

RAGE, you might want to consider getting your E2 levels checked. I know this can make for some sore, creaky and dry joints. Is it all of your joints or just like a bumb knee or something? I had orthoscopic surgery on my knee some years back and it has been nothing but problems since then. I have come to terms with the fact that im not going to be a big powerlifter or bodybuilder in the competitive field, so i just stick to what i can do and concentrate more on time under tension and leaving no muscle fiber left untouched, useing a comfortable weight. You may try this and find it helpful, but otherwise i would suggest wraps and sleeves for comfort.

Weed is stronger, but most people who smoke don't have to be high all the time. Ciggarette smokers always have to have some fresh nicotine in them, and that builds up throughout the day. You don't see your average weed smoker going "I need weed on my break".

interesting thread. when I smoked weed, I couldn't be responsible. so I no longer use drugs.

I'm the guy that would start smoking once per day, then by the end of the month, have quit my job, and be smoking all day going, f*ck it all.

some people can be responsible and use it, others it's just a bad idea. all or nothing for me.

Kingkong, wow thats really interesting that they actually did studies on that, although the cannabis is slightly differing in chemical compounds, concentration, filtration etc but that def. had me absorbed in reading it

I havnt smoked in probably the last week or so and im still feeling the weak knee, rotator cuff, and elbows so I have temporaraly ruled out smoking at the moment.

I started another tread on how I thought nitric oxide could be the culpret since I would literally would drink Superpump250 like it was coffee for breakfast and lunch just about everyday. I then learned from another AMinds member that NO does release free radicals which is why NO supp usually have antioxitants mixed with it. Superpump does not have any I believe or my N30 by MRI which I also take at a near daily regimen for almost a year or more.

I stopped all N.O. products and found my joints to feel a little more mild in pain. AS SOON as I took a full serving of my superpump Ihad severe pain in my left knee a few hours later after doing just mild walking which is leading me to believe I really am over consuming Arginine products along with past smoking without enough antioxidants to fight back all these free radicals. I understand you still get free radicals from car exhaust, tap water, etc but im sure its a little more concentrated in cannabis smoke from a joint, blunt, or bowl thats not being filter through water or by being vaporized. (not knocking my favorite God's given herb) :bigok:
