Looking to get a dog but what kind?!?

Twack, nice dog! I have a 5 year old french bulldog and I think that was my best decision.....great around my kids and acts like a comedian.

Love brindle mastiffs.

How big? My guy is small by Cane Corso standards; he's only 95# or so.

I love hounds. Have had 2 black and tan coonhounds. However, they are not for everyone lol. I will have a red bone blood hound one day. I LOVE it when they bawl. Even invite middle of the night.

That's funny, mine's 5 pounds heavier(= 100 pounds) last time I weighed him. He is the smallest of the litter, all his brothers are at least 20 pounds heavier.. :)
 
There are so many great breeds. If I had a larger house I'd have more dogs...

Its all how you raise then. Train them and how much exercise they get. Bad dogs are the fault of bad owners. They better trained they are they more lovable they are (not so happy when they act up). Plus training is fun and rewarding.

That's my dog's name! lol He's not a Mastiff, but.... well, if you cross a Mastiff with a Greyhound, you get my pup. Great Dane!!! 34" at the shoulder, over 7' from tip to tip, EXCELLENT companion dog. Max follows me around everywhere, is as loyal as anyone could ever hope for in a buddy. He's not a huge Dane, but a decent size. Larger they are, as with other large or giant breeds, the shorter they live - good note to take into account here.

When the wife and I decided to get a dog, we knew that we wanted something big. We wanted something that would be good around a family, protective of us and the house, but gentle. We didn't have a yard at the time, and renting a house, putting up a fence was out of the question. We wanted an "inside dog" that could be slightly independent. In the end, we settled on the Dane. He is everything I could have ever hoped for, especially for a first pet. Mine is rather lazy, but that's ok by me since we have a relatively busy life. He sleeps a LOT - like 20+ hours a day!! He's 5 1/2 now, which is up there in years for him, so he's getting older. If someone comes to the door that he doesn't know, BIG bark lets them know this house is guarded. I have NO fear of anyone coming in to harm my girls when I'm not home. I know that he wouldn't attack anyone, but with the bark and size factor, I highly doubt anyone is going to ever attempt anything.

And just like others have said about their breeds here, I'll never own another breed. My next pup will be a Dane. And after that, a Dane.

Get a Chow.
 
My wife wants a great Dane! Family has a chow and they seem plenty of fun for kids. We have a lurcher, cos he has some bedlington in him he doesn't shed- i have asthma, my 4 year old plays with him all day attacking him with light sabers and pulling his tail etc, we trust him completely.

Zeus,our shop dog,might have to spend some time in doggie jail again and go back to obedience school.He bit the UPS guy today.

HAD, but yes, that was HIS couch. Nice, expensive, real black leather couch. He didn't chew it or anything, but just his weight and claws on the cushions were enough to get it to shred. We moved in December and this was at the old house. His couch went with us, along with a new one for the humans in the house, but turned out there was only room for one couch in the living room. Max's couch got the boot. But... now he sleeps in the old matching recliner. HA!!
 
My friend is a single lady that has 2 great danes in her house. I have fun with them, especially when they want to rough house. But having 250lbs of dogs trying to wrestle with you is a bit rough.

If you dont mind big dogs, honestly, my current dog, and the best dog i have ever had in my life, is an Akita. My girlfriend and I have a 4 year old son, and a fenced yard and just recently bought our puppy a few months ago. Best dog i have ever had. VERY easily trainable (very stubborn though) but amazing with my kid. Pretty much best friends. If you choose an akita though, DEFINITELY get as a puppy. They are incredibly loyal, incredibly smart, however very cautious. I do not reccomend an older Akita to be brought to a new home with a young child, they dont like being teased, but if they grow up with it, they dont see it as teasing, i dont know the exact logic behind it, however several websites refrence it. Look into it though if you get the chance. Awesome awesome breed. Avg size is like 100-130 llbs for a male, mine is from Brazil, and is significantly bigger. He is estimated to be around 180 llbs at full size. Both parents were show dogs and mother 140, father 185. He is 5 mo. at 65 llbs. Definitely a big boy.
