***Log L5/S1 - Slipped disc - Injury, Operation and Recovery Log

That's good then! So your disc will most likely have clotted and scarred over now. Glad you are on the mend bro..., I'm absolutely sick to death and wish I had never had any op at all

Same here man, the abcess caused all sorts of issues and they had to cut out a lot of tissue. And they have me running crazy antibiotics that keep irritating my veins..... I hope you feel better brother

Aw man hopefully that doesn't cause a lot of scar tissue problems... Thanks mate. Fed up. Hopefully you will be on road to recovery now

Thursday 3/12/15 - 11days post 2nd op

My MRI came back and they cannot tell if the disc has gone again or if it's just inflammation, they say it is also very wet in there, again they are not sure what this means.... I am having an epidural tomorrow and seeing how that goes, I am booked in for a fusion on the 17th. Hopefully the epidural will work so I do not have to have it

I hope not too man.... A fusion is no good. I'm still in the hospital (since Monday) and will likely be until next week....that makes me nervous about it being wet and inflamed..... So was mine

And yours turned out to be infection? Oh dear

Yep, but 99.9 percent of the time they can see the infection....mine was just hiding behind the spine in some nerve bundles, so they couldn't see it until it had grown to be a goofball size, and literally way worse pain than before surgery

They reckon all my bloods indicate no infection so that's a plus

It shouldn't be like mine, the placing and way my infection grew was SUPER rare he said

Knowing my luck it would be me ha.... So I've got my epidural today... Hope it works.... Just woken up and wasn't in any pain but as soon as sit up and walk I get calf pain and pain in hip/thigh

Friday 4/12/12 - 12 days post 2nd op

Had a caudal epidural today, my God does that hurt. Hell of a lot more pain in comparison to the standard nerve root epidural I had previously

Not yet, no change yet, prob feel worse, I put that down to the irritation from the injection

Well I hope it gets better bro. I'm finally home, with a Picc line (direct line to my chest from my arm) and I have to give myself an IV twice a day for 8 weeks

Just relaxing right now. I have to use a walker since my back is so weak, but everyday it seems to be getting a little better

Ye take it easy man. Mine seems to be improving slightly. Getting abit of back ache now but leg ache slowly going after epidural

That's awesome man!! We gotta get healthy!! It's Been a long road

Ye I'm taking it easy over next week coz Gotta make decision about fusion next weds. Hopefully I can delay tho.... How old are you if you don't mind me asking bud

I'm 29 years old, but according to the doc, my spine looks like that of a much older person because of powerlifting. How old are you? And if you are making ANY progress, even slowly, I would push the fusion off. You can always get it later, but you can't take it back.

Still young like me, I am 26! Sucks when this young!! Deadlifting must suck for you at your height, that won't help back
Ye I am creeping towards leaving it everyday I get closer

I actually really loved deadlifting.... And I was pretty good, but not any more

So when up and down off the loo, I've noticed I get pain in my leg but it is hard to tell if it is nerve pain or just the tightness of my muscles. Coz they are tight as ****.... Could be a bit of both i suppose

Yeah, that's the hardest part.... I still hurt like hell sitting in the toilet

And does your glute get incredibly tight?

Mine is 100% lower back now, everything else is pretty good. My severe pain is caused by the infection now, and the large incision.
So your legs are still having issues? Just tightness when you sit, or is the nerve pain back? Have you thought about stronger meds? They have me on some crazy stuff now, but I am able to walk around my house, dress myself and cook food. You might feel better during these recovering stages with different meds

Ye the surgeon says it's my nerve being very sensitive. My pills work but still leave me with a little pain which I like. It stops me from over doing things tbh. I have rested all day today and it has improved tbh

Good, glad it's feeling better. My disc is ready for physical therapy but I can't start until I get my PICC IV line out in mid-January. Do you have any ideas when you start PT? Provided you don't go with the fusion?

Glad your disc has healed nicely! I am guessing my PT will be in prob another month. I spoke to soon earlier. Just been for a walk and aching now and have leg pain sort of

That's no good man, if it keeps getting worse, the epidural is a fail.... No good bro

Ye I know, but it's annoying coz ATM they cannot give me a definitive answer to whether or not my disc has bulged again. That obv is a massive deciding point to Whether or not I would get a fusion

Thursday 17/12/15 25days post 2nd op

Had a surgeon appointment yesterday and we have decided to leave it a month longer to see how I improve, I am feeling slightly better actually, just got this nagging calf pain ATM. Had a lot of stinging and pulling on my wound site, worried me but turns out it's just the stitches underneath dissolving.

Hopefully it keeps improving bro.... And I know the feeling with those stitches. I actually just got cleared to go back to work next week (I work on a PC a home) and to try driving. Biggest issue I have now is the huge amount of opiate Pain meds they gave me, and trying to come off of those.

I had a massage last night on leg and I'm killing today from the pressure he did. Hopefully help loosen me up over next few days.... I am suffering with massive headaches ATM and I am trying to come of my opiates and gabapentin, dunno if it is linked but it's not nice

Same here.... When I don't take them, HUGE headache.

I had a bum and leg massage on Thursday and it helped a little. I am having another one tonight. My leg pain is easing slightly and headaches too

That's good news!!! Keep pushing forward!!

How are you feeling?

Well.... Not so great. I just found out that the antibiotic I have been taking IV has reduced my white blood cells to well... Nothing. So I am quarantined until they can get them up since the flu or a cold could kill me. If it's not one thing it's the other....

Oh ffs did they not tell you this? Hope you get sorted ASAP. That's ridiculous

Well they said it could happen to 3-4% of people so I just figured it wouldn't, but of course it did. So instead of a nurse twice a week, one has to come 5 days a week, and I have to skip all of my holiday celebrations

Sounds same as my back. 5-10% chance of relapse. Of course it won't happen to me..... Once and possibly twice. At least you got nurse help, I have nothing. Do have an awesome mum and girlfriend to help tho. Ah well it doesn't feel like Xmas anyway!

Merry Christmas though bro!!! Same here I had to skip a bunch, since a minor cold could drop me in the hospital. Still, we are above ground, and will (hopefully) be able to get back in the gym soon.
