Latest GOP Debate

Who do you think won the debate? Who do you hope takes the GOP nomination?

Fox News pole stated that Ron Paul won the debate which is completely absurd. There is no way he won. He had more boos than applause, and rightfully so. He has such a weak stance on the war, and doesn't really ever seem to get his point across clearly on what he would do for the other topics.

I really think Mike Huckabee took the leadership tonight, and I really think we will start to see and hear more from him. It seems like he has an extremely strong character, strong morals, consistent stance on issues, and clearly understand what direction this country needs to go in.

Then explain the results. Redialing is not allowed on the Fox polls, I actually called and confirmed this. So Hannity is lying when he says Paul supporters 'stack the deck'. Presumably just as many supporters of the other candidates are watching the debates and are just as capable of picking up a cell phone. The live audiences are stacked, all candidates given seats to fill and some get more than others. And Ron Paul is no less clear than any other candidates in his answers.

I really think Mike Huckabee took the leadership tonight, and I really think we will start to see and hear more from him. It seems like he has an extremely strong character, strong morals, consistent stance on issues, and clearly understand what direction this country needs to go in.

He is a good guy it seems, but he will not win the nomination anymore than Ron Paul will, barring some major public movement or major malfunction in the candidate selection process.

No one won the debate because the candidates either don't want to say anything solid, or simply can't do so in the time allowed. To win a debate you need to argue a point successfully which is impossible to do with mostly vacuous questions fielded to people who for the most part give nonanswers.

There is more to it than people supporting one candidate or the other. Hannity never said that Paul's supporters stacked the deck; however, he did say the deck was stacked. There could be lots of reasons why Ron Paul came out ahead: The younger crowd is going to be the one sending the text messages, and a lot of younger people tend to like Ron Paul, and I also feel that it's possible that democrats may have voted in this poll simply to throw everyone off.

I don't see how you could possibly say that Huckabee is less likely to get the GOP nomination. He won over the crowd tonight...plus, Chuck Norris is voting for him.

He's said several times at the various debate post coverage shows that Paul supporters were 'redialing' and 'stacking the deck' in his favor in the polls by doing so.

All possible reasons, but all also forget the reciprocal is possible too. Bottom line is everyone is capable of picking up a phone and dialing in their winner for whatever reason, and those who would vote for the other candidates, again for whatever reason, just aren't texting in.

I don't see how you could possibly say that Huckabee is less likely to get the GOP nomination. He won over the crowd tonight...plus, Chuck Norris is voting for him.

The crowd is irrelevant. Or mostly irrelevant as things go. I've been in politics, local and state level and even went to Bush senior's inaugeration on invitation because of all the money we raised for him, my father in our state and me in a few schools. The candidate gets picked by party players and big donators in the end. It works on favors owed, favors promised, and the general belief among party decision makers that the candidate can run and win an national campaign. Party leaders will decide who has the best shot of beating Hilary and that candidate will start getting more and more attention and local support as they shift local campaigns and major donations in their favor and give them more time compared to other candidates, and by the time the nomination process comes to a finish that candidate will have general support in the GOP, a ****load of money and press time that no one else will be getting. Even from the Jesus freaks.

Huckabee will not win because he can't raise money and because he's too religious. Republicans learned a long time ago to marginalize their extreme religious right as much as possible in the mainstream. That's why in recent years you saw no where near as much of the likes of Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell. They're campaign losers, they were politely ignored or perhaps even explicitly told to stand down and keep a low profile.

Paul will not win for various reasons. He has advantages over Huckabee in being able to raise a lot of money despite a second tier rating. But he's too anti war and will completely lose the big government neocon vote because he doesn't just pay lip service to the idea of limited government, he means it. Young people like him, my guess is when he loses the Republican nomination he might go to a third party ticket like the Libertarians and try and parly his GOP exposure to a decent campaign there.

The Republican candidate, barring some major voting upset that party leaders can't control, will be either Romney, Giuliani, or perhaps Thompson. They can all raise money, they can all lie comfortably enough to be everything to everybody and say all the right things in front of the crowds where it's necessary. They all have deep party support and can more or less keep the GOP whole and not shatter it over any particular issue. And they are all pro war which will keep the neocons happy.

And, barring Hillary Clinton stripping and dancing in pasties for Iranian and Al Qeda leaders, they'll all lose to her int he general election.

:( Hillary is the worse of all evils. Time to get her drunk with some Iranians and Osama Bin Laden at Las Vegas :D

She's not so bad in my mind. In this world you generally have to choose between miseries. In our country it's fascism lite, otherwise known as the Republicans, or socialism lite, the Democrats. If Hillary gets the presidency, and I think she will, you have to look at the positives. It'd be nice to see a woman in office. Either she won't **** things up too bad and maybe one day a woman worth voting for will be there, or she and the Dems will do exactly what the Republicans did: mistake a bare win on a wedge issue as some mass mandate for their whole bat**** program and start ****ing up so badly that people vote them out in a term or two and we reachieve the balance of the no so crappy. Which is the likely way things will pan out.

After 9/11 people wanted a nice defense and even some offense, and the Republicans were the traditional party to go to and they got a lot of leeway. They went bat**** with spending and neocon war hard ons, and decided the best use of their domestic energies was to remarginalize gays as much as possible. The Democrats will do the same thing. They won congress on ending the war and they haven't done jack to further that end. They'll get the presidency on the same issue and think that the win means an endorsement of their whole socialize everything agenda and they, like the Repiblicans, will start spending like drunk sailors in a strip club and trying to shove their more extreme and undesirable programs down people's throats, and said people will vote them out when they've had enough which will be soon enough.

I does happen that way but I just don't want to be taxed out the wazoo and I'm afraid she'll do just that.

Americans pay less tax and have a lower cost of living then Canadians... perhaps a small increase in tax could help your health care, or debt? Seems silly to always promise tax cuts.

Seems more silly to trust the government with any more money than they already get.

Perhaps a small fee increase may not fix anything but leave me poorer too. Sorry, I just don't understand the need to tax in order to pay for everything. What's to stop gov't from just increasing taxes at will if they keep rolling with that strategy ? I think you guys should perhaps demand less taxation from the Canadian gov't :)

**** it, Vote ron paul. im sick of looking over my shoulder

You know what, that's what I'm saying too. We don't have a ton to lose and we should benefit by making gov't smaller. Just stay out of my wallet and let me take them roids without getting paranoid every time I order.

How about stopping frivilous and ridiculous government spending... no duck necrophiliac studies, no $800 toilet seats, etc.... thats what line item vetos were all about, they just don't get used enough.

And I REALLY wish McCain would look better in the polls. He's conservative where he needs to be, and liberal in a number of ways (damn the abortion thing tho, that probably destroys his chances really)

Couldn't have said it better myself ! It's the stupid ways in which we spend cash that bothers me. If we don't spend on useless items than we won't have to get taxed to death. We might actually afford another war if we cut wasteful spending :D

Generally impossible unless you elect people who are hostile to government spending, which few people are.

He's got character and courage, no one can deny him that. But he's also authoritatian to the core. But he's got some frightening ideas and would lead this country further down the road to a more controlling pseudo fascist state.

Fvck it, just elect me. Free steroids, re-introduction of 1-Test. No more retarded spending habits. You might catch me with some intern though, but that's fine because I'm happily single :D

Hell, just go to Mexico if that's all you want. Plenty of steroids at reasonable prices, and so long as you stay out of the major cities the town police are only mildly corrupt and they generally don't hassel you at all. Try a place with a lot of US expats.

I dont think she will. She's has some social liberal leanings but she definitely isnt as left as the right would like everyone to believe. (The left of the party likes Edwards) She is very well liked here in New York and she has done a lot of work with the state republicans.

Above and beyond the issues, we need someone with competence . If I had to choose i would like to see Clinton vs Huckabee in the general. Huckabee is more right than i would like but I could live with him. He's done a lot of work with the dems in his state.

I dont want a president that i could sit down and have a beer with. We tried that route and it backfired miserably. Time for someone with a brain.

I think the character of the president is also very important. I've watched lots of interviews with the candidates. Huckabee is the only one I've noticed that doesn't attack everyone at the knees. He seems like a genuinely good guy that truly cares for the well-being of the nation, and knows how to go about it.

I agree, but try telling that to the rest of the nation, most of whom think character and integrity are things you can turn on and off like a lamp when you walk in and out of the office. As far as the attacks go, I don't mind them. I don't know why the media and so many people in general seem dead set on the idea that disagreeing vehemently with people and hiliting those differences is some how dirty or innappropriate. I don't want someone who will 'work with' the Hillary Clintons and Chuck Schumers and Ted Kennedys of the world, I want someone who will oppose pretty much everything they try to do, and call them on their BS in a timely and no nonsense manner.
