L-Leucine-ketoisocaproic acid calcium WARNING

I got two bottles of L-Leucine-ketoisocaproic acid calcium
for $30 each, so I though I would give it a chance since Leucine and KIC are good supps alone so chemically bonded together they may be even better.

Well, 5 days into taking 7g a day I felt run-down, depressed, and anti-social. I took a 4 day weekend off from work to train and I could not even make myself go to the gym. It also killed my appatite to the point where I could not even look at food. Needless to say I stopped taking this and a week later I feel normal again.

I am prone to mild depression and anxiety, so I don't believe that the typical user will experience these side-effects. I just wanted to warn anyone who may have mild mood changes that can be triggered easily, to stay away from this stuff.

I have also used Glycine-l-arginine-alpha-ketoisocaproic acid calcium and had no side-effects at all. I think GAKIC is one of the best products I have ever used.

EDIT: Chill out. Anymore comments like that and you are gone.

If you knew anything about Glycine-l-arginine-alpha-ketoisocaproic acid you would know that it works. I actually tried it in bulk powder back when it was available.

I hate MT just as much as the next guy but I'm not an idiot that bashes a product that actually works and has been proven to work in studies.

The leucine could be causing a neurotransmitter imbalance that is affecting your mood.

Thank's for the reply Aeternitatis, I had no idea that Leucine had an effect on neurotransmitters prior to taking this. Do you have any info on the subject?

I have taken HMB (as you know is a Leucine metabolite) in 6g doses for months and it had an effect on my appetite but it did not make me feel depressed.

Also, there is a member on BB.com that complained of depression after taking creatine-ketoisocaproic acid. I PMed him and he said that he can get down easy and that he is realizing that he is sensitive to these type of supps.

I started a thread to try and maybe help someone and then I got a neg rep with the comment:

"stop buying into the hype! Gakic!? I betcha I could sell you the dirt off my floor and you'd buy it for $50 a bottle"

I am sorry if my choice of words offended anyone, but do you blame me for being a little pissed? After all one of your sponsors sold me the bulk gakic powder, was he "buying into the hype" offering it as an alternative to MT's sky high prices?

I am done posting here. I'll go back to mindandmuscle & BB.com

Kinda like how hammerhands is affecting yours... ;)

Sorry, couldn't resist.
lol... not anymore. I'm outta there.

But yeah, there could a dopamine/seratonin imbalance occuring. I don't know much about it, but I think leucine inhibits the uptake of tryptophan.

But that's interesting about the KIC. I wonder if there are others who've used KIC standalone and experienced mood changes.

Hey buddy!

I wanted to add some validity to your claim!

I thought it was just me, but it appears I'm not the only one. I too have effects on my mood when taking l-leucine-ketoioscaproic acid calcium (MuscleTech's "Leucine")

On the other hand, I had different mood results than you. For me, it actually enhanced my moods and like fixed the fact that I tend to talk a lot. It actually made such a positive impact on my personality - in a sense, "normalizing" me - that I actually buy Leucine now solely to take it for the personality/mood-enhancing effects.

I think this strange combination of molecules likely has different effects on all kinds of people. For you it's bad, for me it's good, some people I talked to hadn't even noticed a change at all in any way (I used to work at a vitamin store before coming back to college).

However, anyone who tells you crazy for saying such things, is naive and shallow-minded. Things affect everyone different ways! Thanks for sharing your thoughts - now I know I'm not the only one who noticed a change in moods, and I don't feel so different!

This is what I'm going to do - I'm going to do my own little study and try to isolate the effects of the mood.

First, I will take very high (10,000mg) doses of BCAA (alone). I will do this for two weeks (even though with Leucine I noticed the effects on the mood almost right away). I will document my moods and how I feel.

Next I will, while continuing the BCAA, also start taking KIC (ketoisocaproic acid) for two weeks. Likewise, I will document my moods and how I feel.

Then I will discontinue the BCAA, but continue takings KIC (ketoisocaproic acid), alone, for two weeks. Again, I will document my moods and how I feel.

Finally, I will discontinue the KIC also, and begin Leucine (l-leucine-ketoioscaproic acid calcium) for two weeks, and once again document my moods and how I feel.

Then I will determine if I can just save lots of money and buy only the BCAA, or buy some KIC alone, if that's what is causing my mood change. Otherwise I'm stuck with buying Leucine if I want the mood benefit that I get from it.

As a response to your comment on KIC being a good product (l-leucine-ketoioscaproic acid calcium), I was just googling (yahooing - yahoo seems to give better results, and google is going downhill) to see how it worked. I thought this study might be useful for you to read:

According to the study, KIC does nothing when taken alone. I found it when searching for what KIC actually does.

too much calcium is known to cause anxiety/ depression, I have been researching on this for a while, so I agree with both of you, I guess it also depends on the delivery of calcium as well.

Calcium is a relaxing agent - we give calcium to our 9 year old and it works great for his anger fits. The form of calcium is also extremely important - some forms can enter body quickly, others are better controlled. Also, all research uses statistical analysis to interpret results and the only proof you get from so called "research supported" evidence is that it works "on X percent of small sample of population" (who were part of the research). You need to treat all claims for any product as a guidance - "there is a good chance that it can work for me". In your case, it does not, so don't even think twice and stop taking it immediately. And yes, thank you for the warning!

yeah, leucine defou makes me feel depressed and it's like there no pleasure from life at all... I've got a 1 kg pouch knocking about my place, goddamit!

it's funny, since i have read about the advantages of taking l-leucine over bcaa as the l-leucine is more useful for muscle recovery.

i'd be interested to see if it is the leucine, the excess calcium, or the ketoisocaproic acid.
