There is a chart that gives a certain length for a persons height but it feels too long. It says a 9' rope for my height of 5'- 7". How do any of you determine what length to use?

I recommend getting an adjustable rope. Then hold one end at armpit height, letting it fall tot he ground and making sure that you stand on it, pulling it tight around to underneath your other armpit. The second end should be adjusted so that it is where it comes under your armpit on that side.

Thanks Rosie.
I pulled the clip off of one end and will make the adjustment with duct tape then reclamp it.
