Joining the Air Force...

Good deal buddy! Just remember, nothing is certain until you step on that bus to basic, you can always say no. Good Luck my friend!! Feel free to contact me if you have any questions

Hell, little known fact is that you have like 90 days after bootcamp to get out under "failure to adjust". They don't let people know that and you have to really stick to your guns because they'll spin things all kinds of ways, but it's true.

Well, I'm really considering it. Actually, 4 years ago when I first started training I was doing so to ready myself for basic. Well I never ended up going because honestly I got scared. I also couldn't join right away because I only had a GED and they wanted me to obtain 15 college credits. But more than anything it was because I was afraid of leaving my family and friends for a world that was unknown. So I just went to college and told myself I'd just get a degree and start a career. Some 4 years later I'm 30lbs heavier, strong than I ever thought I would be, and in the same position I've always been in...in debt, living back at home, and no future with the company I work for. I can't take it anymore. I've got to get going with something in life or be stuck like this forever.

I think joining the military is probably what I need. I've never been able to decide on things in life. I've always wanted to do so many things that I could never decide on just one. Joining makes me decide on something and then also makes me have to honor that decision. It also gets me out of my comfort zone, away from family and all that I've known. It causes me to seek a greater strength within myself (and from God who also strengthens me). Not only that but I'll finally have some decent health coverage, a career path, the ability to support myself, and be able to get rid of my debt (mainly college).

I know there's got to be some of you who are currently in the military or have served before. Would you say that my reasoning is good? I believe it is because like I said it forces me to break away from all that has kept me in the same place in life. I think I can only benefit from going in. I would like to hear some opinions. :)

Yeah your reasoning is good and good luck in basic but please don't let the drill sergents control you, you should control them. remember what the army's slogan is, army of one. I know your joining the air force but if you want promotions fast, you have to do things on your own and excel without the assistance of others. And by way congrats on your success on getting a GED and a collage degree and I'm just curious, did you drop out of high school?

Alright, so I went to MEPs Friday. Signed the contract and swore in. The only unfortunate thing that happened was I didn't pass the color vision test. Despite being able to see reds, greens, blues, and really all colors just fine. But unlike other branches the Air Force will only offer the PIP color test. So that took a lot of jobs away from me. But what can ya do, ya know? Besides that little set back I'm excited to have gotten this far! :)

I did drop out of High School...right after my sophomore year. I've been out of High School for 9 years! Haha! Just been working ever since.

I'm almost dropping out of high school due to the change in policy of my school. Want to know the school I'm currently attending?

What are your goals further in life? I would join the Air force is you plan on having a civlian career later, if you want to make the military your career you should join the Army. Air force is great because almost all jobs translate directly to civ jobs, but Army is a better option if you want to stay in forever in my opinion. I have been enlisted in the Army for 5 years now, and I like it. If you get an intel job, you will be set for life, even as a civilian. Army taught me Russian, interrogation, spy techniquues, and gave me a top secret clearance. I can go and make 150k a year in afghanistan as a contractor if I want.

Basic is a joke for both air force and army, marines are the only ones who have a truly rough time. I went through OSUT (combat arms basic/ait) 5 years ago, before they overhauled the program and it was hard as hell, nowadays they cant even swear at you I hear.

Also, I don't know about the Air force, but the army has a student loan repayment program, which is the best way to get money for school. They will basically pay off all your loans. I wish I had gotten a Master's in something instead of enlisting out of high school, because the loan repayment is sweet, and you can only get it on initial enlistment. well I have to go to gym so Ill check in later :P

All inter-service rivalry aside, AF has some of the best intel jobs/programs out there.

Wasn't trying to cause rivalry :D And also didn't read the whole thread or I would have said something else since he's already sworn in lol. Yeah I am sure they do, they run the SERE school which is one of the best courses you could ever take. I was just speaking from my experience though, the Army seems to be a better choice for careerist military folk, a lot of senior AF people I have talked to don't have good things to say, but the AF has a LOT more jobs that are useful outside. army has very select few.

Ok, so I got some good news this morning! As I said before I failed the PIP test up at the MEPS. Which of course, disqualified me from all the jobs I was interested in. Well prior to going up to the MEPS I had went to an eye doctor and taken the Farnsworth Dichotomous D-15 test, which I passed twice. Well my recruiter made some phone calls and talked to some higher ups. He was told to fax my paper work from my eye doctor to them and they would clear my color vision results! So, as long as everything goes smoothly I should be g2g and be able to get one of the jobs I wanted before! Trying not to get my hopes up too much since nothing is set in stone...but it sounds like everything should workout.

Glad to hear things are playing out well for ya man

Ya I failed my color vision test once at the end of basic but they let me retake it, that damn test is gay dont they know the percentage of males that are partially color blind. What job are you going for again?

Exactly! Well I had a nice little list of jobs, but the job at the top of that list was Loadmaster.
