Interesting Probiotic Article

Hey guys I figured I'd post this in the RPN forum since I'm using GUT HEALTH and loving it. I thought dsade and others would be interested. Scientists are exploring a strain of Strep bacteria that competes with the strain that normally causes strep throat. I'd love to hear comments.

Thanks for the contribution. :)

I'll look this over in a bit.

I'm also interested in anything that can fight against the resistant staph infections that are popping up everywhere.

Three words dsade, Oil of Oregano (OOO). My uncle turned me onto this stuff. I don't think there is a bacteria or fungus it can't kill! Seriously though OOO has been shown to surpass the antibacterial potency of vancomycin! Interesting article below:

So do you just ingest this stuff to help with your digestive track or something? Or do you use it as a topical anti-bacterial?

It could be ingested OR used topically. It's NOT a probiotic. Oregano Oil contains a phenol Carvacrol which has potent antibacterial properties.

Here's the wiki link:

Be sure to take OoO with food. It's very acidic and can give you wicked heart burn if you take it alone.

Sorry to hijack the Probiotic conversation...

Prevention is the key to slowing its progress at this point. If people washed their hands, and wiped down equipment in the gym this would significantly reduce the instance of transmission.

Unfortunately, we ourselves are to blame in ways for the MRSA epidemic. The overuse of antibiotics, and many people not finishing their antibiotic course of treatment (because they feel better so the stop taking them) directly contribute to the formation of resistant strains. Not just MRSA either, VRE (Vancomycin Resistant Enterobacter) as well.

They are working on a whole new class of antibiotics, but i haven't even heard anything all that promising yet. Even if a new breed of antibiotics are formulated, this same issue will reoccur if preventative methods are not effectively put into action and applied on a large scale.

These are good reads indeed. The problem though is there would need to be much more extensive research and clincal trials associated with this. Not to mention an effective delivery mechanism where the majority of promising antibiotics fail.

As far as a topical treatment, seems more likely at this point due to the complicated mechanisms involved in effective systemic delivery/utilization/metabolism.

MRSA strains vary in themselves. Culture and Sensitivities are needed to effectively determine the significance of the strain itself, and to determine narrow spectrum antibiotic sensitivity for treatment decreasing the incidence of developing further resistance.

True.. Delivery is everything. Still it is very interesting to see herbals mimic or even surpass synthetic antibotics, even if only proven thus far in vitro.

I agree. You should see some of the new approaches of antibiotic development, very impressive.

You're so right though. There are so many untapped herbal substances out there that will oneday either be a cure, or an effective treatment to a pathological condition. Sometimes we overlook natures gifts that are right there in front of us.

Synthetic antibiotics are warranted for sure, but i'm also a big believer in homeopathic medicine as well.

if the OoO is so acidic, should I stay away from it if I already have bad acid reflux? Right now I'm taking Nexium 2x a day for it & don't think it's working.

I've been wanting to get the OoO for my wife.
