Check out what someone had to say about cold showers at Synergy Muscles front page...I think it's called "Water, not just for drinking!" I think it was by Nandi but I am not sure!
 
I found these... I have no real idea if these represent sound thinking or not.

First this:

"When you get a shower alternate cold and hot phases. Have the shower hot for about 2 minutes and then change it to cold for about 1 minute. Alternate this 2-3 times during your shower. What this will do is force blood throughout the muscles and help them recover faster. When the shower is hot the blood rushes to the surface and makes your skin red, when the shower is cold blood rushes back to the center of the body. If you have access to a sauna you can also alternate a sauna for a few minutes and a cold shower for a minute." -- from Lee Hayward.com

Also this:

"Start with a cold shower for 5 minutes. Let the water cover the entire body. Then move into the sauna for 3 to 4 minutes. After this time move back into the shower for 1/2 the duration you were in the sauna (1.5 - 2 minutes). Repeat the above two or three times. Always finish cold. Great Post! I read an article on switch to hot/cold showers on bodybuilding dot com a few years back
I was going to post about alternating hot and cold showers. It seems to me there was a study done on it maybe by the soviets but I am not sure. I think I came across it in the early 90's. I tried it with so so results. It definitely sucks in the winter.
 
Good digs Shootmeagain! Seems like agreement on enhanced recovery at least, I'd still like to find some endocrine info too. I can't take hot showers, I'm hot natured and take cold ones no matter what time of year. I try to make it a little warm right before I get out, but that's only because the colder I get it, the hotter I feel on the surface once I get out and start drying off.
 
Hey, thanks for the props.

I'm going to try out the alternating sauna/cold shower bit myself. Though I'm unsure which should come first and which should come last. I guess I'll check out what works for me. I think sauna first, then alternate a couple of times, ending with a last cold shower.

BTW - If/since it was a good post...how about some rep points? Seems like most ppl on AM don't bother to use them... but I want some!!!

I cant post any study data, but ever since I was little, playing
sports, and being a martial artist. Whenever I would have an injury
my chiropractor would always have me alternate Ice for 10 minutes,
heating pad for 10 on the injured area. he never went in to an explination
on this, but I respect him and what he does, so I'll go with its ability to help
heal and reduce soreness and inflamation. All good things after a
harsh workout.
