As part of my PhD (in exercise physiology) I am researching the effects of betaine supplementation on strength, power, and body composition in highly trained men. I need at least 20 subjects, and thought I would extend an invitation to the members of AM to participate.

Here's what I need from you:
Live within an hour or two of Hartford CT (I will drive to meet you or pay for your gas).
18 - 35 years of age and free of injury
Be lifting for at least 2 years consistently.
Be able to squat 1.25 body weight and bench press body weight.
Be willing to stop using sport supplements during the 6 week study. (Protein, vitamins, fish oil, and some stimulants are ok. No creatine or AAS)

Here's how the study will go:

We meet, I go over everything in detail, you sign paper work.
I measure height, weight, skin fold thickness, and arm and thigh girth. From this you will learn your body fat, the muscle cross sectional area in your arm and thigh, and how it changes over a 6 week period.

We then do the strength and power testing.
I'll measure vertical jump, bench press and squat 1 rep max

You'll then receive a 6 week supply of betaine at 2.5g per day.

You continue to train over the next 6 weeks as you normally would (or you can follow my hypertrophy based program) so long as you bench press and squat each week. You'll email me your squat and bench press volume on a weekly basis

We meet again in 6 weeks and remeasure.

Please pm or post here if you want in or want more details.

Yes, thats a good point. You will be provided with a 3 day log to fill out...and also asked to maintain caloric/macronutrient intake based on that average.

Subbed , I wanna see this , I love betaine (in craze also) and I think Betaine, Beta Alanine , BCAAs , HMB, creatine and Glutamine should be always staples in a bulk , but i cant participate since I dont live close there :) , have the assets , just not the proximity , good luck! and congratz on the PHD!!! Looking forward for the results!!

I dont live close enough to participate. I would be interested in seeing what your hypertrophy based program looks like, if you wouldn't mind PM it to me.

^^^^^^Id like to see the program as well

been hearing alot of talk about betaine lately...

Good luck with your study, Zir. Would be cool to see some responses from here, of course I would strongly consider volunteering if it weren't for the fact that I don't meet your study parameters.

I don't know whether I like betaine or not, but it's in my preWO Muscle Marinade @ 2.5g.

The hypertrophy program is non-linear periodization, each muscle twice a week for 6 weeks. Its pretty streamlined and basic. I can post it up here in a little bit.

Do so please and hit us up with the reviews!! Would love to know more about Betaine under a PHD eye , Phd Jim Stoppani recommends it a lot...BUT he has a BB dot com program routine for 12 weeks...so I kinda lost faith in him for that haha

Its one thing to design a program, be it any length of time.

Its another to figure out what the optimal time frame is for determining results in research AND getting subjects to stay on and follow protocol for that period of time.

Whats wrong with a 12 week routine?

Nothing against the routine, everything against BB dot com haha, the 12 week program by kris gethin made me laugh and well, Jim stoppani is cool as a trainer and phd bodybuilder, I just think he was better off without bodybuilding turning him into "a workout for size for everyone" lol

If I was still in NY (the reason I haven't been posting the last few weeks) I would have made the four hour drive for science. Sounds interesting, though. Keep us posted.
